1/48 Eduard MiG-21bis

Post by IanG »

Starting this little beauty, as an "in-between Group Builds" build. No aftermarket needed, as there's PE, and canopy mask in the box.
Will be finished in Bulgarian markings.

Sorry for lack of updates, totally forgot. So here goes.
Got the cockpit started, and the PE fits well. I used Akan's Emerald Green. With the coloured PE being a different shade, I used the Akan to blend in as much of the PE as possible.

Cockpit now installed in the fuselage, along with the shock-cone. Shock-cone painted with Hataka Red Line Pastel Green.

Got the seat assembled, and PE belts applied.
Pretty good seat, for one that's kit supplied.
Painted with Hataka Blue and Red Line acrylics.
Just need to weather it a little, and it's done.

Got the seat finished, just need to put the ejection handle in place. I'll do this at the end of the build.
Weathered with a Ultimate was, AK Interactive pigments, and then dry-brushed with Vallejo Aluminium.

Lots of bits added to the the fuselage. A lot will added at the end, to lessen the chance of me knocking them off!
The Master Model pitot is assembled, and dry fitted for the purpose the photo. I lightly sprayed it with Tamiya fine primer, which made seeing the locating holes for the vanes easier to see.

Managed to get a bit of bench-time, this weekend.
Ultimate black primer applied to the airframe, pylons, weapons, wheel bay doors, and the undercarriage and wheels. They were left to dry overnight.
When dried, I painted the antenna areas in Hataka Red Line Pastel Green. These were then masked off, and surrounding areas touched up with some more black primer.
Following that, I made a start on the pre-shading. For this I used Hataka's acrylic Blue Line Insignia White. Although specifically made for brush painting, I've found if you thin Blue Line paints 70:30, in favour of thinners, and some drops of flow improver, they airbrush really well.

Making a start on the camouflage. Got the first colour laid down, Hataka’s Red Line acrylic Grey Green. The fuel tank is done, as it’s only the single colour.
This Bulgarian scheme has a hard edge to the camo colours, so I’ll be breaking out the Panzer Putty for the masking off.

With the lighter green now dry, I started to mask off areas ready for the darker green. This is Hataka Red Line acrylic Dark Green.
The masking is done using MIG's Masking Putty, which is very easy to use, and does not leave any residue, or marks, on the paint.

Well that's the camouflage all finished, just some touching up to do.
It's been a long time since I used any masking, when airbrushing camo. Recently I've been doing my camo's freehand. Can't say I'm all that happy with the result, it could've been better. In hindsight, I should have stuck to freehand.

Hataka colours used:-
Interior Grey-Green, camo
RN Medium Blue, underside
NATO Brown, camo
Dark Green, camo
Pastel Green, antenna covers

Next task is to Glass Coat in readiness for the doing the decals.

All the decals are done, and some Aqua Gloss coat applied, sealing the decals.
The undercarriage, weapons pylons, and fuel tank have all been weathered using Ultimate's dark dirt wash.
Once the gloss has fully dried, the main airframe will also be given a dark dirt wash.

One of the reason I chose the scheme, it’s a bit different.
