There are some lovely schemes in this boxing but I've wanted to do Marseille's aircraft for ages.





Unfortunately some of the glazing parts were missing so I've emailed Eduard for replacements.

He really is fascinating!

First impressions of the kit are very positive. I've only used the PE pedals in the cockpit, the tiny parts are just too fiddly for me. I will use the belts and IP though.

First time using Ammo's Extra Thin too - so far, so good.

I've done some work in the cockpit. I really don't like PE belts - they're just too flat - so I made my own.

All the chipping was done with a silver pencil.

Hi all,

I'm resurrecting an old thread here. I started working on this back in 2018 then lost interest and its resided on the shelf of doom ever since.

Seeing @Donkeywalloper's G6 thread prompted me to pick it up and dust it down.

I'd already mostly assembled and painted the cockpit as above, however, I thought the grey was a bit dark (not that much' ll be seen once the fuselage is closed up) so last night I highlighted it with a lighter shade and applied a few washes and picked out some details in colour.
Hopefully tonight I can assemble the IP.

I have a aged Trumpeter Stukka kit somewhere...much like the situation you have here.
I don't know why, but it Eduard must have a marketing genius I reckon. It is the ProfiPACK labeling. Even though I haven't bought many with this labeling 2 in total I am always drawn to it.

I have a love/hate thing with the Profipacks. I love how detailed the kits are, but hate assembling and adding all those extra bits!

I've managed to get the fuselage halves assembled. I'm really not a fan of kits where there are no location pips, especially on larger sections. Just makes things unnecessarily difficult in my opinion.
Maybe my expectations were too high, but the wing to fuselage fit wasn't as good as I expected. Nothing a bit of filling and sanding won't fix though.
Finally, the air intake filter has been assembled and the PE parts attached. There are two small brackets that I'm yet to attach.

Onwards and upwards! Not as much progress as I'd hoped, but I have painted and weathered the propellor. Hopefully it looks a bit worn!

Nice work. Those Eduard 1/48 birds can be a bit tricky but you cant argue with the detail, especially the surface detail. Knocks all others out of the park.

Ah, chap, lovely, lovely work on this.
Really great work so far and will be intrigued on the outcome of another Eduard build.
I'm quite enjoying my first foray in decades into Winged stuff, so may search out another BF109's to build.

Slow progress tonight but I did manage to paint the spinner. I used LifeColor Incinerated White and, well, it's okay but I'm not totally happy with the finish.
I also painted the rudder using a mix of Mr Hobby H33 Russet and Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red. I then attempted to add some subtle mottling by adding white to the mix, but it just ended up looking a bit pink. To fix things I added a drop of H33 to the gloss varnish which evened things back out.

Looking awesome chap. You may have doubts but from here it looks great. Remember a little staining and weathering will help a hell of a lot for looks and covers a multitude of variances.

I've made a start on the painting by tackling some of the RLM02 parts.

I initially sprayed these with a 50/50 mix of Xtracrylic RLM02 and Tamiya XF-22. In hindsight, and after an oil wash, this made them slightly too dark for my liking so I've gone back and highlighted them with straight Xtracrylic RLM02 tonight.
The spinner has had an initial wash to highlight some of the detail.
And finally I've taken some time to prepare the wheels by removing the slight seam that was running around the circumference of each tyre.
I'm too tired to do any more!

Finally at the point of being able to start painting the model, been a slow few nights with no progress to speak of.
I'll be using Mr Hobby acrylics for the main colours.

I had to chuckle yesterday, as I posted my photos from my build, as we had reached exactly the same point in build, i.e. Wing Intake colours RLM02 and Wheels.
You have done a brilliant job on this model, cracking works.

Well the RLM78 is done. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself until I realised I should have painted the yellow section under the nose first

I think I'm edging ahead in my side by side build battle with Mr DW!

A start made on the RLM79 topcoat tonight. Sprayed freehand with just some small areas of masking around the wingroot to protect the yellow cowl.
There's some slight overspray to clean up later but on the whole, I'd say it's a good start.

Topcoat almost done with the exception of the wingtips - left intentionally so I can safely handle the model while painting. I'll fill them in later. The 79 was subtly post shaded using a lightened mix but it's pretty hard to see from a distance and under the gloss coat.
Next up is the white fuselage band and cowling behind the spinner but I'll give the gloss 24 hours before I start masking.

Getting there now - white sections painted with a mix of Tamiya XF-2 and XF-19 and then oversprayed with LifeColor Incinerated White so they blend in with the spinner.
And I managed to break the tail wheel leg...grrr.

Thanks for the positive comment. The wingtips and flaps have now been painted and everything has been given a gloss coat to prepare for decals and weathering.
On the topic of gloss coats, my usual "go to" - Ammo's Glossy Varnish, just didn't work for me this time. I've used this stuff on all my recent models (including the undersides) with no issues but this time I just couldn't get a smooth coat. I had to resort to Tamiya X-22, which I haven't used for ages, to get the job done.

Overnight pause for everything to dry then onto decalling!

Hi all,

I've started applying the decals and some washes using Ammo's Neutral Brown Panel Line Wash and things are looking more Marseille-like already.
The gloss coat has remained ever so slightly tacky which has made removing the washes more difficult than usual. I'm also a bit disappointed with the decals. Although they conform to the recessed detail well with some Mr Mark Softer, some of the smaller markings are decidedly heavy to my eye.

Finally, I've noticed that one section of the windscreen should be RLM79, but this isn't clear in the instructions so I'll have to do a bit of repainting.

All in all, decent progress though.

How did you do the two level cammo feathered edge on the fuselage

The scheme was painted, including the feathered edges, freehand using an airbrush and Mr Hobby Aqueous paints.

Hi Kev,

I don't know what the exact ratio of thinners is, I just guess! Probably at least 60:40 thinner to paint, if not more. However I often find I've overthinned the paint so it's not an exact science!

I use different thinners depending on what paint I'm using. However as my preference is for Mr Hobby Aqueous, I also use their Aqueous thinner.

Thanks for the info very useful and confirms my own findings. I had to paint a feathered straight line recently on my AH-1Z build, it was the first time I'd ever done it. I did experiment with levelling thinners but found it worked just as well with Aqueous, although I did do a normal straight line first, then feathered it.
