Video builds and modelling Mojo

Ok so, one thing i've learned over the last couple of years. Video builds, group builds and S.I.Gs kill my modelling mojo.

I started the Kraz AFV techniques video series a couple of years ago, got three parts in and i've not built armour since and sold over 50 amour kits i had in my stash.

Ever since i started the new 109 techniques guide i've lost nearly all interest in building aircraft. the year before i started that series i build about 20 aircraft, in the last twelve months ive only finished three with over 8 going back in the box due to lack of mojo.

I've started numerous GB & SIGS and again put the kits back in the box part build as i've lost interest.

I have even lost some interest in bikes since the magazine build i started a while back.

So i need to start building just for me, since i started building cars in september i've built 24 (8 this year alone) and thats because there's no pressure at all.

I've made the AFV and Advanced Aircraft Techniques videos private now as i get asked all the time where the next parts are. Every time i post a pic of a car i've built somewhere i also get asked about the 109 and AFV videos too.

I know a few of you bought 109's to build along with me and i do apologise about that, but i think i need to get these "monkeys" of my back and hopefully build the aircraft for myself i really enjoy.

I understand what you mean about GB's & SIG's.... To me this puts 'pressure' & 'stress' into something that I want to do for pleasure and not for competition. I understand why some like & thrive on the competitive aspect of these, and I fully respect that they do and what they do, but it is just not my thing.

I like to do my modeling without the stress & pressure. After all that's why I do it...

I have found there are 3 aspects for myself over and above the kits themselves;
1 - The retail therapy aspects and buying new tools & materials that allow me to do things better or to a better level than I could without. (Did I say I like new tools lol....) I also love testing new tools, techniques and materials out and comparing to what and how I did or used in the past.

2 - This is partly some of 1 but the learning aspect with new books, online reading and watching tutorials. this I find both interesting, relaxing and entertaining, as well as often being amazed at peoples skills and abilities.

3 - Having quiet time for myself and 'slowly' building something at my own pace and with space to be able to put it away and come back later if I feel its going bad ways and need to learn a new skill and get it right before trying again.

I joined here after you must have started the 109 builds so have not seen that, but fully understand the sentiment about "monkeys" of your back when you started out with a keen interest on a build but loose your interest or Mojo...

I am sure that those who bought 109's to build along would fully understand how you feel and respect that.

There are times when we all walk along a path and feel we took a wrong turn for whatever reason, taking stock and changing direction is still moving forward

I can understand why you've lost your modeling mojo, having been there, done that over 15 years ago. But modeling is kind of like a vampire....it just won't die. In late 2016, felt it coming back, but didn't want to go back to aircraft/armor because when I did quit, I was starting to get AMS (Advanced Modelers Symptoms) and producing maybe 1 kit a month. With zombie/apocalypse being popular on tv/in the movies, found there's a whole lot of people really into these themes. Haven't had this much enthusiasm about modeling in DECADES. Done a lot of research via Google, downloading around 15K of drawings/photos of survivors, damaged/abandoned buildings, homes, etc. along with all the things you see in everyday life like dumpsters, light poles, mail boxes, etc., some of which I've not only scratch built, but made molds of for multiple purposes.

Never been a herd animal as far as doing GB or SIG builds. But in doing my research, been learning a lot not only from modelers on Youtube, but those who are into cars (plastic & diecast), doll house builders, sci-fi and railroaders. Think you have a bad case of AMS and that's caused your modeling burn out. Maybe go back to basics.....build a kit out of the box. Period. No extra goodies, just use what's in the box along with NO modifications to the kit such as thinning down fenders, etc. Remember, modeling is suppose to be a way of relaxing/enjoyment and not looking at it like some 40+ hour a week job.

Funny as I am the other way.... more motivated in a sig or gb by the comments within my long winded threads
Perhaps hand further 109 videos over to an interested and able mate from the crew??

I think what many don't understand is that video production is just that a production. And it's not just the post-production part (editing, rendering, uploading, following comments, etc.), but the in-production part of setting up cameras, developing scripts, "acting", not being boring, etc. All of that can really slow down and take away from a build; heck, just stopping to take a few snapshots and posting an update on a build thread can be a drag... Some people are into that part of the hobby, if you've lost your "mojo" for that and want to get back to just building, great! Even just occasional glimpses into your work can be inspiring.

I think you have a talent both for building models and producing videos; as others have said your prior work has drawn many, including myself, to the forum. But if the later affects the former, then you will stop completely and we'll lose it all. Do what you love, love what you do...

I certainly understand removing the videos from the incomplete series in order to reduce the incoming questions. It looks like the completed videos are still available which is great, they are a valuable resource.

I hope you someday get your video mojo back; even just product reviews and short tips/tricks would be nice. If not, so be it.

Continue to have fun and support the hobby you enjoy the way you want to enjoy it!

Enjoy your work. Kinda sad that mojo is going down the proverbial toilet for the tutorial series. I think that it's nice that you are doing short how-to videos like decanting cans and the 2k tutorial. At least it's a lot more focused than the 109 series.

In all seriousness, I'm glad you're going to start building for yourself again. I miss seeing great works of airplanes coming from your bench. Here's to hoping your find that mojo!
