I’ve created an effective rough cast feel to a 1/16 Tiger turret by stippling Mr Surfacer 500 and now that i’ve airbrushed the camo etc, my mind has belatedly turned to how i’m going to get the tank id decals to bed down. I appreciate a spray option is available through numbered templates but I’d doubt that would provide a ‘sharp’ edge to the numbering.

Would the usual decal application prep of spraying a gloss coat prior to micro sol/set really overcome the very effective rough cast feel of Mr Surfacer?

Anybody come across and solved the decal/Mr Surfacer paradox?

I use X20-A, and plenty of brushing over it.

Micro sol/set should get it to lay down to the contours. I recently finished an A10, the shark mouth decal had to go over quite a prominent raised blob (that's a technical term ) and sol/set made the decal mould to it perfectly. Pic below to show what I mean.

Its a little hard to see, but the blob is just in front of the tooth and the decal completely covered it.

4) think again
5) have a go
6) return to 3
