#30 ICM 1/48 HE111 H6

Yeeehaaaaa it's May 1st and after a long wait the Bomber SIG is here.

So my choice for this destruction oops sorry construction is the ICM He111 H6, of the 4 choices of scheme I haven't decided yet which to do.

The box art is quite impressive though basic.

Getting into the box is to say the least not easy, but once in you are faced with a shoe box type box.

The sprues unfortunately are not individually packed but packed into 4 bags 2 of which are the clear parts.

The sprues themselves don't look to bad at all, no visbale flash the panel/internal detail looks good.

There is 2 bags of clear parts, I have not opened the bags yet as one part had broken off so will examine the later.

The Instruction booklet looks good and is in colour, we've all seen a destruction book so I am not going to fill the thread up with pics of every page. As stated earlier, I will post pics of the chosen scheme as and when I decide.

The paint call out on the front page is in both Revell and Tamiya but again I am unsure which brand of paint or if a mixture of brands will be used

Now for a little history of the HE 111 H-6, taken from the cover of the instruction sheet.

At the beginning of the 30s it appeared to the world that there was a need for a high speed bomber that could out strip the contemporary fighters of the day. Out of the specifications the twin engined HE 111 designed by the Heinkel Flugzeugwerke AG company was born.

As of May of 1941 the company was producing the HE 111 H-6 variant with liquid cooled Jumo 211F-2 engines giving increased power, with VS 11 wooden wider horde propellers and more powerful armaments. This variant could carry SC 1800Kg bombs or 2 LT F5b torpedoes externally.

The HE 111 H-6 was the most produced variant of Heinkel's medium bomber. They were to produce approximately 1800 aircraft up to the end of 1942. The HE 111 H-6 was to serve in all theatres as a level bomber,torpedo bomber, reconnaissance,mine layers and transport aircraft.

looks interesting Les, there's several ICM kits now but it will be interesting to see how your 1/48th H-6 one compares with the 1/32 P's (other than size....)

I've started, if you can call it started, still waiting for the after market to come in so have began by building steps 1-5, am a bit wary of glueing step 5 together as not sure what is going to be in the P.E kit, so a stop has been ordered.

So far the kit seems to put itself together, hope it stays like that.

Good Morning Captains,

Right so the PE still has not arrived, decision has been made.......out of the box it is then. Hopefully the masks for the glass will be here before I need them.

Progress so far, THIS IS AN AWESOME KIT it just seems to fall together.

The inside of the fuselage and the cockpit are nearly ready for paint, have a look,

Right everyone I have some paint on the inside of the fuselage.

Undercoated in Ultimate Grey then a coat of Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminium, clear coat then a coat of AK Interactive Worn Effects finished off with Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey.

So now it's a case of picking out the detail and getting some of RLM 02 off for the worn effect. I will put some weathering effects on once the two halves are ready to go together.

Ok all, were into week two now and so far I have managed to get paint down on both fuselage halves and the internal walkway/cockpit. paints used are Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey, with detail picked out with various colours of Tamiya. Also the worn effects by AK seem to have performed well enough,as have the dark dirt pigments.

The only down side I would have to say is that considering the size of the model the interior detail is nowhere near as good as the Airfix 1/72 but I suppose being 'a budget kit' you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the comments all.

Update, here we go, I have joined the two halves of the 111 together, oh boy that was a chore, the locating holes on one side are a bit tight so when the parts come together it leaves a cap, then apply the TET and being a hot glue hey presto the parts melt together. Think I may still need a bit of filler, will wait and see when the securing tape comes off.

Latest update on my (yet to decide on paint scheme) He 111 H-6

Fuselage is buttoned up took a little filler, I used Mr Surfacer 1200 on the seams.

Lower wings are attached and I think some filling and sanding will be required here. This kit has an 18 inch approx. wingspan, that's quite a beast for my little work area. The roof panel has also been fitted.

The engines have been built and are well detailed for OOB, not sure if it's worth weathering them as once they're in place and the cowlings are fitted they will not be seen. Might just stain them a wee bit with oil etc.

Latest update on the He 111.

Engines are fitted, upper wing surfaces or on and oh boy that was finicky, a bit of brute force and ignorance to move this that way and that the other way to get the surfaces to fit together but I think I got there in the end, a little bit of filler may be the order of the day though.

The greenhouse now, with the front gun in place, In the destructions the cockpit glass is put together before fitting to the front, I personally found it easier to place them one piece at a time on the front. You will also see that a little bit of filling has taken place on the engine nacelles. So this is where she stands now.

The aircraft is primed in the usual, as it now appears to be Ultimate Grey primer. I have to say that as Paul has said before it sprays better when warm and I certainly concur.

Okay all it's time for my latest update.

The He 111 was given a coat of XF-16 Flat Aluminium with the intention of putting some chipping fluid on to later get some weathering done, but I have just realised that I have forgotten to put the fluid on before giving it a clear coat

, so back to the drawing board.

Ok so this computer seems to working better than the laptop

Have been having problems trying to post comments and updates just kept coming up "Unable to display page"

Right its been a couple pf weeks since I last updated so here goes.

The underside has been painted in XF-23 Light blue and the topside in XF-2 Flat white, the wingtips and the tail band are XF-3 Flat yellow. So once the yellow was unmasked a clear gloss coat of Xtracrylics was applied to protect the paint.

Now onto the undercarriage, this was pretty straight forward and presented no real problems, although there is still a couple bits to be fitted I have went ahead and placed the legs into the wheel wells.

Some xf-16 Flat aluminium has been dabbed about the wing leading sdges and wing roots, hopefully this represents some heavy chipping

Some XF-1 and XF-2 Black and white were mixed together and although I think that I have put way to much on it's supposed to represent the dirt from the exhausts. I will be the first to admit that I have a lot to learn about weathering.

Another light coat of gloss varnish and time to bring some life about the aircraft. I think that the application of decals does just that, one side done this morning.

I also painted the wheel well doors today and some other smaller pieces so will get them on soon.

Now that is how she stands right now on her own legs, hopefully get her finished decaling tomorrow.

Ok all, this is the last update for this build, (no piccies).

Today I finished the decals on the aircraft, then a final gloss to protect the decals. Hopefully tomorrow will get her a wash and possibly a flat coat, unmask and that should be it there or there about.

So next post will be the final reveal.
