#21 BobM's 1:72 PV-1 Ventura

Post by BobM »

Captain #21 reporting for duty, sir! Sir, yes sir!

Let me preface this by saying I'm pretty much a beginner at this hobby. I know the major quality manufacturers, Tamiya, Hasegawa, Eduard, Revel, etc. But Minicraft? It looks like I may have selected a challenge for this build:

Image

According to Scalemates, this is a 201x issue of a 1987 Academy kit; it looks it's age. The challenges will be:
  • The size, at 1:72 it will have a wingspan a little under 11" (about 28 cm) and length under 9" (about 21 cm). Parts are tiny, detail is minimal.
  • Molding quality, it's fair; there seems to be a lot of flash and parting lines, but most is small. I hope it doesn't give me too much trouble.
  • Ejector marks, so far I've seen one in the middle of the instrument panel, which is smooth, detail provided by a decal. And between the two one-piece rudders, there are three.
  • Required modifications, on the box it claims "Pose-able Landing Gear"; this means you can either build with the landing gear doors closed or cut the doors in half to open them and add the landing gear. Also the clear nose sections need to have the window panel lines sanded off and the gun ports filled (other versions of the PV-1 had 2 0.50 machine guns in the nose turret).
  • Fit issues? Based on the above and the quality of the molding, I expect many; well, not that many there isn't much to this kit.
Skill level 2, right; we'll see.

The most impressive part of this kit might be the decal sheet. While pretty minimal, it is from Cartograph and looks really nice...

In honor of our fearless leader, I'll be building the RCAF Operational Trainer from 1948. I haven't found much reference on this configuration, so the cover art will have to do; I don't think there is much room to add detail anyway. This will be an OoB build, except I may invest in some EZ Line for the antenna rigging. This configuration has a natural metal finish (so I guess that is a challenge as well). The plan is to prime with Stynylrez Gloss Black, and finish with Vallejo Metal Color acrylics; I'll attempt to get some of the aluminium variations shown in the cover art. Being a trainer, I imagine it remained pretty clean, so minimal weathering (which is also a challenge since my typical MO is to use weathering to hide my mistakes!).

Can't wait to start, but I'll will until I add some history tomorrow.

Thanks for all the encouragement and well wishes!

Yeah, I don't see many of these planes being built, especially not this particular kit (maybe there's a reason for that :eeek: ). Revell makes a 1:48 version which was a new tooling in 2011. It looks pretty nice, but I think the wingspan would be about 16" which I just don't have space for.

PV-1 Ventura Info and History

The Lockheed PV-1 Ventura is a twin-engine medium bomber used mainly by US and British forces during WWII. The design and layout was similar to its predecessor, the smaller and lighter Lockheed Hudson. The Venturas were manufactured at Lockheed's Vega Aircraft factory in Burbank, CA starting in 1942.

Rather than regurgitating (aka plagiarizing) information available elsewhere, here are some links to browse at your leisure: As I said in the first post, this build will be of an RCAF Operational Trainer from 1948. Now, I've not found much information on these, nor have the marking provided on the decal sheet helped to uncover anything interesting. The decal sheet includes what I believe is a serial number of 2414. I found a site that claims to have records of all RCAF aircraft; the 2414 they have listed is not a Ventura...:

The World War II Database has this mention of the RCAF in its Ventura article:
World War II Database wrote:The Royal Canadian Air Force was given its first Ventura aircraft on 16 Jun 1942. Eventually, 8, 113, 115,145, and 149 squadrons received them; Training programs at Trenton, Ontario and Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick received several aircraft as well. The 286 Canadian Ventura aircraft mainly served in coastal patrol missions.
And the Wikipedia article has this:
Wikipedia wrote:Royal Canadian Air Force

A total of 157 Ventura G.R. Mk. Vs were used operationally by the RCAF from 16 June 1942 to 18 April 1947 in the home defence coastal patrol role in both Eastern and Western Air Command. They were flown by 8, 113, 115, 145, and 149 Squadrons. A further 21 Ventura Mk. Is and 108 Ventura Mk. IIs were used in a training role at 1 Central Flying School, Trenton, Ontario, and at RCAF Station Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick (RAF No. 34 Operational Training Unit) as part of the BCATP. A total of 21 Mk. Is, 108 Mk. IIs, and 157 G.R. Mk. Vs were in service during this period for a total of 286 aircraft.

An interesting topic for a build, I personally have Revell's 1:72 Lockheed Hudson in my stash and I won't lie, when I first spotted the Ventura in this line-up, I was tempted to post the British rendition of it myself. I may yet still do so if the Canberra is done in time. Regardless I shall be keeping an eye on this one as it progresses and I wish you the best of luck and enjoyment.

Update 1 - Much Progress

Well, we had a free weekend, so I was able to get a lot done; to be honest there isn't much to this kit, so there isn't a lot to do. But as I said before there are challenges and I'm trying to take my time to address each of them.

One of the first things to do was to get started on some required mods. In order to have the landing gear deployed the bay covers need to be cut in half, pretty straight-foward. Here they are before and during, along with the Tamiya razor saw I used to do the deed:

Image
Image

Once cut, I wasn't sure what to do with them next. There are no explicit mounting points, so I decided to see if I could cement them in place. That seems to have worked:

Image

The second mod is on the nose cone which needs lines for the windows sanded away and the machine gun ports filled. The nose cone is two clear pieces that the instructions would have you fit together while joining the fuselage half. Since I need to do quite a bit of work on these I joined them now and filled the gun ports with sprue goo:

Image

Before doing any further body work, I decided to prime this with Stynylrez Black so I can see what I'm doing; I'm now giving it a day or so to completely cure before filing, sanding, etc.

Image

I also prepped "many" small pieces for painting. This wasn't too bad, while there was flash to deal with it was pretty easy to deal with. The biggest issue with this kit is that some of the parts are terribly molded.

Image

And these were primed, again with Stynylrez Black:

Image

Also the wheel wells:
Image

Then it was on to some color and "detail" painting. I mixed up a custom Chromate/Interior Green using Tamiya paints that are in my paint rack: 3:XF-3 Yellow, 6:XF-5 Green and 10:XF-77 IJN Gray. I think it came out well. I used it for the wheel wells and the "highly detailed" cockpit:

ImageImage
Image

And the twin engines:

Image
Image

Finally, I was able to get a start on the canopy, and it needed work. I don't how well it will show in a photo, but it has wiggle, bumps, scratches, etc.:

Image

Well, I figured this would be a good time to test my newly acquired Ultimate Thinny Buffers. OMG! :jd: They are amazing!

Image

That picture doesn't really do it justice, remember, this thing is about as big as a thumbnail.

Now that it's in better shape, I moved on to masking. For this, I decided to use Paul Budzik's method of laying down masking tape where the frame is and then using bare metal foil for the mask; the BMF conforms to the masking tape and can be cut along those lines. I've used this before with some success so... I started with masking (using another recent purchase, Aizu Micron Masking Tape:

Image

In progress:
Image

And completed; ready for paint...
Image

Well, that was a long post! But like I said, I made a lot of progress.

Thanks for taking a peek!

Thanks all!

A couple of things to look out for with the BMF masking.
  • Have a sharp knife!
  • Use a toothpick or similar to help define the "line" created by the BMF over the masking tape.
  • Hitting the "line" can be hard, at least for my eyes.
  • It doesn't take much pressure to cut through the BMF.
  • Make sure to get into the corners.
  • The edges and corners of the BMF lift pretty easily, be careful working around already completed panels.

How quickly do you take the BMF off after painting?
Is it ok to stay on there for a while or does it need to come off early??

You're asking me questions as if I was an expert!

Having only completed this once, as I recall it was on there for a while. I don't think there is any rush. I needed to remove some residue with a little mineral spirits. I mentioned it in my Hurricane build: viewtopic.php?f=603&t=22274&start=20#p283046. Hey, those old build threads come in handy!

Update 2 - Nose Job and Windows

I had some time after work today, so I got to work, first on the nose. This needed some panel lines removed that outline the turret windows that my configuration does not have. I had also filled the gun ports with sprue goo and that needed filing and sanding. To prevent destroying too many panel lines I mask the areas to be worked on:

(Please excuse the focus... )
Image

Each area was rough sanded until the lines disappeared:
Image

After rough sanding I removed the masking tape and moved on to the next area. Once all were finished I worked my way through the grits up to 1200 Thinny Sticks:
Image

I must say, the primer was great! It sanded well and held up to the blue tape. I was worried about lifting paint at sanded edges, but nope, no problems. But you can see one area that needed more sprue goo, so that needs to sit another day before more sanding and the next primer coat.

I’m also concerned about loosing panel lines between sanding and layers of paint. I hope to rescribe after another primer coat, but I’m not sure how the primer will react to that. So I practiced using my scriber and HiQ Carving Guide Tape.

Image

It seems to have worked well, although lining up the tape isn’t easy especially on the cone shape; I wish I had gotten the 3mm tape but it wasn’t in stock.

Well, while the sprue goo dries again, I moved on to fitting the fuselage. Oops, I almost forgot the windows! And, oh what a mess! The molding is horrid! But never fear, Ultimate sanders and buffers to the rescue!! Here are during and after pictures. In the during picture it’s partially sanded and you can see how the middle is sunken and lumpy; the backside was worse. But after sanding it flat, working the grits to 1200 and the the blue and white buffers... you get the after!

Image
Image

The fit in the fuselage was tight (better than loose) and it took a little knife work to open up a couple of the holes. Once in place, I glued them on the inside with UV activated glue. Then the outside was masked with, you guessed it, BMF:

Image

Before quitting for the night, I installed the cockpit in one half:
Image

After this, a test fit of the other half revealed a lot more work that will be needed. But more on that in the next update.

Thanks again for tuning in!

Thanks again friends! Yup, this has turned into an exercise in fixing problems, and they keep on coming as you’ll see here shortly.

As for “note taking”, I tend to work for a session or two (or three...) and hopefully remember to take photos of “interesting” things along the way. Then I’ll find some time to sit, review the photos and try to organize them plus a brain dump into a cohesive “story” of what I’ve accomplished. I hope it’s working for you guys... so on to today’s short chapter.

Update 3 - Plastic Surgery

Not a lot of benchtime this weekend having spent a few days visiting our daughter and then today being my wife’s “special day”. But I did get a start at finding and dealing with more issues... First, after re-priming the nose cone I could seen how uneven the first round of sanding was and a few seams and divots that needed to be addressed. Some of the worse parts got a bit of sprue goo. The even areas got a light sanding, just enough to removed the primer and hopefully flatten them. Some rescribing was also needed at this point. Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures of any of this, but once I get it re-re-primed, I’ll get some photos of that.

The next thing to do was join the fuselage halves, and as expected there were fit issues. While doing this, I realized there is a lower rear facing turret that the instructions don’t address very well. I did see some photos of Canadian PV-1’s that showed the windows in place, so I masked those, again with BMF, and filled in the gun ports with more sprue goo. Rather than using masking tape to highlight the clear panels, they already had panel lines that showed through the BMF, so I just used them.

Image

This was then fit to the fuselage, except, it didn’t fit:

Image

So, more sprue goo:

Image

Next was the bomb bay doors!! Ugh, a big problem with the mold here:

Image

So, still more sprue goo, a nice big puddle of sprue goo:

Image

That’ll take a while to completely harden, so until then, I got a start on the tailplane:

Image

Well, I’ve got lots more filing, sanding, filling, and priming in my future. Until next time. :cheers2:

Nope. I’m just plugging away at it. Good experience. I figure if it turns out like crap, I’ll just blame the kit. If it’s half decent, it’ll be an accomplishment.

Really admiring your perseverance on this one Bob - you must be dreading each part when you offer it up for fitting!

Thanks!
For my last go round, I used a curved blade, like this:

It was much easier to just slide and rock this blade than trying to cut with a standard straight blade.

Update 4 - The Fun Continues...

So, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Here are two; that should be two thousand words, most of them 4 letter...

Image
Image

:wall: Well, this had me bummed for a while, I wasn't sure how to proceed. Finally, I said "nothing to lose" and smeared on some sprue goo. After a few days to cure and an hour or so of filing and sanding:

Image
Image

That might actually work!

Now to whip the rest of the body into shape for priming. And that includes continuing on the bomb bay doors starting with a second application of sprue goo:
Image

And more filing, sanding and re-scribing:
Image

Much better than what I started with:
Image

Here is a photo of that area from an actual PV-1:
Image

While this was going on, I got a start on assembling the wings. Perfect fit... NOT!

Image

The gap/warp actually seems to have been OK, the wings are thin and flexible enough. There were of course other seams and depressions and what not that needed more, you guessed it, sprue goo.

Image

Well, that's where it sits now. Still more sanding, re-scribing and cleanup to do before a layer of primer. Then I'll get an idea of how successful (or not) I've been.

Thanks all!

Seems like the fit on the full scale one is almost as bad as the kit - maybe the kit is more accurate that we realised after all!

Great work sticking with it Bob.

Good point. I guess I can lower my standards!

Update 5 - Primal Fear

So, after all the filling, filing and sanding, the best way to tell how I did is a coat of Stynylrez.

Image

Generally not bad. A few places need more sanding and there are a few divots, scratches, etc that need work. The biggest thing is I can now see all the places I need to rescribe. For example:

Image

And here is the repaired bomb bay:

Image

There are a few pinholes and scratches that I’ll try to take care of with 3M Spot and Glazing Putty thinned with hardware store lacquer thinner.

This gets to sit for a week while I’m away, then I can get to cleaning up the issues and rescribing. These spots will get touched up with more Stynylrez. The plan is then a final primer coat of Stynylrez Gloss before the color coats of various shades of Vallejo Metal Color Aluminium.

Update 6 - Long time, little progress

Yup, it's been a long time since the last update, but without a proportional amount of work. Since the last update I've been on vacation, busy with family commitments, suffering from heat and a broken A/C, but mostly distracted by researching a new multi-year, future project that I took an interest in. I'm not sure what will come of that, but research is fun.

So, let's see, where were we. Oh yes, as of the last update I had done the first round of primer and got to see how much more body work was needed. So that led to more filling, sanding, priming, repeat. Here is an example.

Image

Eventually I got to a point where I stopped, not because it was "perfect", but I was tired of that dance and it was "good enough". So then it was a coat of Stynylrez gloss black primer; this was my first attempt with this, it came out OK:

Image

That was followed by Vallejo Metal Color Aluminum; what a PITA! I had nothing but tip-dry problems and at one point ended up just "hosing" it on. After drying for a couple of days, I masked off some panels to paint a different "aluminum color".

Image

I tried to mix a little Dark Aluminum into Dull Aluminum, but was afraid to get it too dark. It came out no where near as dark as I planned, depending on the lighting it is lighter than the plain Aluminum.

Image

Since the Dull Aluminum is more of a Matte finish, maybe some weathering will take to it differently and make it a bit darker, we'll see... I probably should have just added Dark Aluminum to the plain Aluminum I started with; lesson learned.

At about this time heat hit our area along with various other activities. So it sat this way for sometime. Finally about two weeks ago I started back in and masked off wings, etc for the various markings. Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red and XF-1 Flat Black:

Image

Then the next heat wave hit, and to top it off the A/C went out. My bench is on the second floor, no shade; it hit 90+F (that's 32+F for you foreigners) in that room a few times. No way I was getting anything done there! Yesterday the A/C was fixed, today I finished up early and have had a chance to do some touchup and repair.

After removing the "white tack" that I used to mask the engines, two things happened. First, I broke of the "studs" for the props, and second, I saw that I had done a crumby job centering the engines! Fortunately I was able to pull the front off the engines and then remove and reposition them. While they were out, I filled the back with CA glue and baking soda so that I could then drill a hole from the front where I can insert a wire to hold the props.

Image

I think the next step is a coat of Aqua Gloss and then gluing the wings and tail to the body. Hopefully, I get some time this weekend, but, well, another family function....

Thanks for looking in!

Update 7 - Decals: A Pleasant Experience!

Finally! Something went fairly smoothly on this build, but more on that in a minute.

After a coat of AquaGloss that got a few days to fully cure (much of which including “baking” at 90F while the A/C was out), it was time to attach the horizontal surfaces to the fuselage. The wing root fit was atrocious, but I knew that going in and it would have been a huge job to correct. Instead I chose to hide it by lining up the upper surfaces as best I could so the major misalignments are under the wings. It’ll pass. Here’s a shot taken while the glue setup with things held in alignment.

Image

With that done, it was on to the decals and now that it’s done I can say it went as smooth as silk; especially compared to the rest of the build. I think there were several reasons for this:
  • There were only a few, large decals, so a minimal amount of work! ;)
  • Paul’s 1-2-3 decal application method (aka, RTFM, read the f’n manual); I followed it to the T.
  • AquaGloss. I think this was the first time I had cleared with AquaGloss before decals. Normally I’ve used Pledge/Future/Klear but have had several issues with that. First, MicroSet tends to bead up on it (you’d almost think it was formulated to repel liquids, kind of like a floor polish... oh, wait...). Then once the decals are in place, MicroSol (and Solvaset) soften and “attack” it a bit; usually not an issue, but sometimes... But with AquaGloss, none of those problems.
  • Cartograph Decals. Yup, this cheap, crummy kit came with Cartograph decals, albeit just a few. I think this was my first experience with them, and they were great to work with. Thin, yet surprisingly durable and they conformed really well to seamlines, etc.
Image

But this wasn’t without a few obstacles. One, the seamlines and windows on the drawings in the instructions didn’t completely match the actual model; this made placement trickier than it should be. Two, my less than “clean room” conditions at the workbench meant that a few little bits and pieces found their way under the decals; I think I dealt with most of these. But if these are the only problems I ever have with decals, I’ll take it!

Well, enough babbling...

Up next is another coat of AquaGloss, some mild weathering, attaching the landing gear and a few other details... and that should do it!

Update 8 - Weathering and Details: The Final Chapter

Alright. After the another coat of AquaGloss, it was time for some weathering; something I'm still working on. As the lucky recipient of a set of Ultimate washes, I figured there was no time like the present to give them a try. So first, a coating of Dark Dirt.

Image

Yikes, that's scary! I'm not shooting for extreme weathering since this was aircraft was used for training. But the Ultimate washes wipe off nicely after drying with just a touch of water leaving only the panel lines and corners with some nice contrast. After that I added Concrete in a few places, mainly over the red markings and decals. This was a bit light, so I removed most. Then added Light Dirt which was better.

After that I went too far and tried to add some "subtle" Lamp Black oil streaks. Fortunately, the oils come off pretty easily and I was able to clean it up. Here she is mostly cleaned up.

Image

Sorry, there are no more pictures, you'll have to wait for the reveal.

But after weathering was complete, it was final coat of AquaGloss before finishing the details. This included removing the canopy and window masking. (I actually forgot the windows until I had nearly finished my reveal photos!) There was also the fuel tanks, landing gear, props, antenna and pitot tube to add as well as some EZ-Line for the aerial wires; this was my first time using EZ-Line and it was wonderful!

Well, that's it, she's finished! It was a struggle, but a great learning experience. As you will see in the reveal, it ain't the best, but IT"S DONE!

Thanks for looking. The reveal photos should be up shortly.
