I'd been thinking of building a " Pfiel" for a while, but when I went to buy one, no one had one for sale

Except an ebayer in America who was asking $170 for a Tamiya

So I hunted around a bit and found one of these for a much more affordable £25!



I mean hey! it's a classic!

Oh the joy of unpacking it and discovering it had raised panel lines........ How I laughed



So it was out with the sanders and by the time I had done the bottom ( incase it was awful) I'd gotten a lot better at rescribing .





Engine detail was pretty poor, so I had a go at improving that as well







Starting to put it all together, the fit is not as bad as I expected but there's going to be a lot more sanding in my near future

I'm building the two seater night fighter version so there's two cockpits

Wow, I really like what you did with the cockpit.

I'd better come clean and admit that I'm not a fast builder. In fact I started this kit in JANUARY!

So on with the show.....

Quiet a bit of filling and sanding and rescribing later I've got a reasonable finish to start painting



The scribed lines are a bit deeper than I would have liked, but as it turns out, they are going to get a LOT of coats of paint

Preshaded and a little patching to add some tonal range..... If only I'd known how pointless this was!

At this point I'd better mention that the main reason for building the two seater version is because it has that really cool dark on light "wormy" camo pattern. I've been wanting to try that pattern for ages!

Turns out it's not very easy to do! My first attempt quickly turned into a practice go! And ended up looking like what might happen if you parked your Dornier in a bad area!


After re covering it, attempt two wasn't much better!

Attempt three showed hope for the future, the lines weren't too bad but the pattern just looked wrong.

Attempt four was awful!

On attempt five, time to try something different. So I covered the whole plane in the darker colour and masked the worms with blu tack. This gave me a decent (ish) pattern but it wasn't soft enough. So I tried to go over the pattern free hand


Attempt six I tried to clean up the crap edges by free handing the lighter colour around the dark edges (it helped but still looked naff).

Then I noticed the engine cover (you can just see it in the above pic). It was still painted dark grey from attempt five. So I tried spraying the lighter colour over it free hand, leaving the dark worms unpainted. And that sort off worked!



So now I'm painting the whole thing dark again, but I've run out of light grey paint!

Now my paint order has arrived so I can have another go. And then another and another in fact I got to about attempt 10 before realizing that I couldn't control the air flow and the paint flow and freehand a pattern, so I started cutting out the variables as best I could. My air brush doesn't have a lock / stop for the paint flow so I had to wing that, but I did have a adjustment screw tap on the air line so I set it at the minimum pressure that would paint a line and penciled on the patten that I wanted.



I didn't hold out much hope of success............ BUT IT WORKED!



It could be better, but I can live with it! After a few touch ups I started attaching the under carriage that I had already hand painted and painting the exhausts.

Side note.. I'd already put lots of lead in the nose to avoid tail sitting. Which was lucky because apparently counter weights hadn't been invented when this kit was made.



Considering that the decals are 44 years old they went down pretty well,
