I must be mad as I will have two builds going at the same time.
This kit is 36 years old! You can tell by the decals and muck/mold on the kit.

It was a bargin when I bought it, or was it?

Got your work cut out for ya here. But nice decal sheet you picked up there! I think I would be doing the black tail myself. Though I would NOT call that low vis! LOL

I thought that I would start with fixing the front wheel well in first, as the fuselage looks a bit twisted.
It might help with the gluing together later on.

The next shot is with just the bomb bay and landing gear housing lined up and held in place.





So looking at the instructions the "office" goes in once the fuselage is together.

So I was thinking that if I install the tub to one side it might help with the alignment issues?
Looking at the decal sheet for the instrument decals I thought that I would have a go myself to improve it?
I found some plastic card and started cutting up small pieces.

Stuck a few on.

Once dry the overlap on the side panels.

Was sanded off.

Looks a bit naff.

So I put some smaller squares on and added a throttle made from an engine mount from my spares box.
I then built the two seats and sprayed Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey.

For some strange reason I wanted to build a fire extinguisher.
So I found this,Part 16 from the same sprue as the throttle lever.

Sprayed that RLM Grey.

I added small blobs of colour using the end of a cocktail stick to represent switches.
Also a resistor and a small piece of wire.


Oh while waiting for paint and glue to dry I started cleaning up the MAD BOOM?

I filled the holes with my home made filler/glue.


Once dry sanding down.

It's what the Navy aircrew called them. If you've ever heard one, they sound like a Hoover vacuum. Sort of like how we call the E-2 Hawkeye a "Hummer" because of the sound the props make.

On with the build and I brush painted Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey.

The instructions tell you to weight the nose of the aircraft, but not how much, so I got out the wheel weights.

As you can see I have put 50 grams in the plane.

With no detail on the cockpit dash I cut up small pieces of plastic card, a few of which I drilled to represent screens.

With a splash of colour it looked better.
I used the decals for the overhead console.

Dash added to the office.

With the paint drying I built the MAD Boom.

With the cockpit and boom in place I started to assemble the plane.
I started by gluing the lower part of the fuselage and then clamping.

You can see the misalignment in the next few photos.


I moved first to the cockpit to glue and fill with card.

So that is all for today.

Okay today I have been busy, two builds going on and I am getting on with the Viking.
Fuselage glued together.




So we have an intake in the tail section that needs improving so I insert some 4.8mm hollow rod in to the hole.
I had to sand the tube to get a nice fit.

Cut the extra off with a fine saw.

I filled the hole visible in one of the earlier pictures with plastic card and glued on the sonobouy dispenser(s).

Here I need to ask you all for some advice, as I so far have been unable to straighten out the wings in this kit, while I do have another kit I can steal the wings from, I'd like that to be a last resort. With that in mind, do any of you have some suggestions as to how I can fix the following?:

Could you warm them up in hot water and then get them straight?

I have no idea if it would work though

a large enough tub for the wing to fit in. Fill with warm to hot water ...not boiling. something flat as long as the wing to press down on the whole wing so it straightens and it doesn't bend in the wrong place. spacers may be needed to place under the ends. These shouldn't be too high just enough to bend past the point you want it as it may have some spring in it and that will compensate for that. do it without them first and see how it goes. Careful you don't put a flat spot into the plastic.
Don't use a hairdryer as you can over heat an area then the plastic will collapse.

Okay thanks for the tip, have you had the same problem at any time?

I had this with the s-2 tracker I’m building, but it was the fuselage. I taped the parts together to see it they would straighten out once assembled. They did, so I started by glueing from one end. Just a bit at a time, letting it dry before moving on to the next bit. Adjusting as necessary to maintain the shape. Worked great for me.
I’ve only tried the hot water thing on resin, not sure it works on styrene?

Okay thanks for that one,I did that with the fuselage but it was not as warped as the wings.

keep increasing the water temp if it doesn't work the first time a bit at a time.

On with the build, but firstly I would like to say a big thank you to Chief 5437, Digger 303 and Fridgy for ideas on how to straighten the wings on this build.
So this is what we are talking about.


First I glue the wingtip and clamp.

I then re-clamp it to a straight piece of wood.

The wing was left till the next day before I glued the next part.

The wing was left again for a day.

The rear part of the wing was then glued, clamped and left to dry.

I also clamped the lower section of the other wing to see if that might help.

The next day I removed the part-glued wing from the wooden strip, to find out that the pin and hole was misaligned and once lined up it gave a big step at the front of the wing.


Sorry for poor photo.
I then removed the pin with a sharp knife and did my best to get a pleasing/passable result.

The fixing tabs had to have 3mm removed off each end before they would fit into the slots provided.

Not brilliant but ok.

Nice recovery! Great idea clamping it to the wood. Fingers crossed, the other wing will turn out just as good!

The second wing has to be put straight now.
I will start like last time by gluing the wingtips and fixing it to my trusty slither of wood, leaving to dry and then adjusting and gluing as I go.
Just a reminder.


Wingtips first.

But this time a little more clamping needed to be done.
I had high spots and low spots on this wing, so I had to raise the low spots.
So when the wingtip was dry I cut out some plastic card to lift the low area. The wing was forced open and a square of 2mm plastic card was pushed into place with the tip of a modelling knife and the edges pressed together. This seemed to lift the low area so I pushed in the needle applicator of the glue and fixed it in place.
Clamps were added to the wing edges once glue was applied.

After an hour or so the clamps came off, it looked passable.
Looking at the wing root I could see that same process would be used to lift low areas and push down on high areas on to plastic under neath
More oblongs of plastic would be needed, they were eyeballed and cut and pushed into place.
The result is okay but not fantastic. Glue was applied and she was clamped down.

I did not take pictures when cutting and gluing as I was too involved in trying to make a reasonable job of it.
You can see the plastic shapes as I hold the wing up to the light.



If I come across this again I will cut the plastic to fit the inside of the wing and build up and sand down first.
The horizontal stabilisers had to be clamped to the magic wood, glued and clamped.
I can see why the kit only cost £8:25 in the sale.

And on the other end.

After drying time the second wing and stabilisers were test fitted, sanded and refitted.
Once happy I fixed them in to place.
Not brilliant but part of the learning curve.


I will see what I can do to tweek the wings, or it will be some highlights and lowlights to give an illusion of a straight flat wing.

NB. One of the undercarriage legs is broken so I have sent for some metal ones to replace and give strength to hold the weight.
