Wet Pallette's for Acrylic painting

Well just wondering if any of you use wet pallettes?

A friend introduced me to their use some years ago at GW, but I have always made my own short term ones using just a kitchen sponge cloth and baking paper / parchment on a plate just for the painting session, however I recently decided to make a dedicated seal-able box version I could leave mixes on overnight using a sandwich box from Asda and a cut to shape sponge ....



The problem I have had is that recently I have issues getting the unwaxed / no silicon paper / baking / parchment paper (the old fashioned stuff basically) and have tried a couple of cheap types from £1 stores... The one from B&M Homestores works ok'ish... but not as good as the old stuff that I had a roll of...
My mate has one made out of a 150mm Petri dish and uses the pre cut baking circles, but the supply of those seems to have dried up too! Only ones I can now find online are the non stick ones, which must have silicon or wax on them I guess!

Anyways... whilst researching a few suppliers out I came across something new! Made by a company called Redgrass Games, a French company formed by 2 brothers. Which is a purpose made wet pallette aimed at modellers and figure painters... It has recently been on Kickstarter and is due to start shipping this month... Not cheap though at €35 for the smaller version but then buying quality tools is never cheap!

I confess I have ordered one of the small size and an extra Wavy Pallette, being the sucker I am for a new tool and what looks like a quality one at that..... I just couldn't resist... Well I have promised myself no more scrimping with cheap tools and kit, so I went for it... a bit miffed I missed the Kickstarter at €25 but Hey Ho!

I do have to say though, it seems very well thought out, well designed and looks to be a quality product... Made from ABS and with an integral seal moulded into the lid, and you can use the lid as an extension pallette with the spare sponge if you wish... They were originally supposed to come with an everlasting membrane instead of the paper sheets, but it seems they have had issues with the membrane being stained by some paints, so perhaps that may come later...even so it looks to be a far superior product to any of the others I have seen previously

I have looked at the artists versions of these in the past, but they are all just too big for my needs and normally cheap crap plastic and also very expensive for what they are, the Masterson one being £52 RRP!!
There is one from the US by privateer Press aimed at modellers but its got poor reviews, people say the sponge is rubbish and goes mouldy quickly and paper sheets don't fit fully unless you take out the staples from the book form they come in, also as it seems to be a re purposed small tool box with just a sticker on the lid and no proper seal, and due to the weight of the lid it often tips up backwards! so at $20 + shipping I have always given that one a miss!

Just hope the Redgrass one is as good as it looks!

Well at the end of the day baking paper or parchment is just that and unless the Redgrass stuff works significantly better I will still be looking for a suitable cheap roll I can get easily in the UK, as I don't have any problem cutting it to fit the pallette....

So if anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful?

I may try the stuff from Lakeland but will wait to pick some up next time we go to Solihull as I would rather check it out in the flesh than order online and find its no good!!

Scratch That!!! Just Googled Contact paper and found out what it is....

It would be far too expensive to buy that and just use the backing compared to buying parchment Paper...

Contact paper cheap ones are about £7.50 a roll for 2M from B&Q and Baking / Parchment paper is £1 to £3 for 10M ! Its just finding the non wax / silicon type.....

It would be far too expensive to buy that and just use the backing compared to buying parchment Paper...

ebay for a pound.....but it might not be suitable anyway.
