Global Scale Modeller

Well, not long finished my entry into the Bombers SiG and I decided to have a crack at another wingy thing. There's a Dragon initial production Tiger that's screaming at me to build it.....and I do love Tigers!! But no! Stay focused, it's the Spit next.

I saw this in Hobbycraft a few weeks ago and at just a smidge over 20 quid, I thought it would be great for practice, if nothing else. Now that I've started it, it's actually a great kit. The cockpit is probably a little under-detailed for a 32nd scale model, but there's plenty of scope for those who like to indulge in a little scratch building. For me, I'm doing this as a quick build.....bish,bash,bosh, post some pics and it's done. Well, that's the plan! Blink and you might just miss it!

Nice classic box art. Gotta love that sleek, streamlined shape.


Cockpit parts assembled and sprayed up with Ultimate grey primer.


Everything painted and assembled. The instrument panel is decals included in the kit and they laid down quite nicely. The centre instruments are actually on a separate decal, which is a nice touch.



Inside of the fuselage halves painted and weathered.


Cockpit installed and the fuselage is buttoned up. Nice fit and I'm hoping that it will only need a wipe of filler here and there.


And just for the hell of it, I dry fitted the wings to get an idea of the size.


Again the fit looks very good and It'll probably only need a dab of Vallejo Acrylic putty along the wing roots.

I must say, for £20, this is an absolute bargain. It's not the hardest kit in the world to assemble, but there's a couple of fiddly bits to keep even the die-hard PE fiends entertained. Well, for a couple of moments anyway. All paints have been Vallejo Model Air from the RAF range and the wash for the interior was MiG Productions brown earth enamel wash.

Next up are the control surfaces, prop and landing gear and then I can think about priming it all. Then my favourite bit....paint and weathering!

You know what they say, them models ain't gonna build themselves!

I'm flying along with this one now. It's a great kit and goes together really well, no issues so far and pretty much everything is built now. I've read that this kit isn't particularly accurate and that Revell measured-up a bit of a Frankenstein that was made up of other marks. Not sure if that's true or not, but for someone like me who knows diddly squat about them, it's a great kit to rekindle my boyhood love of these iconic planes.

All the main control surfaces are attached and the canopy is masked up, so what else - Ultimate grey primer of course, but not before spraying up the canopy and the seam line with some VMA black.




Greebles and widgets painted up and I'll attach these once the camo is all done.



Pre-shaded on the underside. Somebody once told me, (probably one of Paul's "How-To" vids) to make this quite scruffy as it looks better once the base coat goes down. Suits me just fine, scruffy is my only setting!!



I normally pre-shade the panel lines on the top-side as well, but I find this is usually a waste once both colours of the camo are down. I've seen a lot of you fellas use a marbling technique and in my opinion, it looks really good. Having never tried it before, I wanted to keep it quite light, plus I tend to add a fair bit of post shading with darkened dark earth and a really thinned black. I'll probably kill it laying the camo down to heavy, but, oh well!



Underside painted up with VMA sky. I know they've fallen out of favour with quite a few people, but I really like them. They seem to go down really nice and give a good even coverage. Some colours are prone to tip-drying, but I usually add a little bit of thinner plus a couple of drops of acrylic flow improver (Windsor & Newton's), turn down the pressure a tad and that normally sorts it out.



Thinned the sky about 60/40 (paint/thinner), added a few drops of white and sprayed up some panels, high spots etc. for fading/bleaching etc.





That will do me for now. I'll let this all dry and if I get a bit of time tomorrow, I'll mask up for the camo. I'm hoping to get this one finished failry soon as I've got a Wellington winging its way to me from Airfix and I'm thinking that it'll look kinda nice next to my Lanc for the Bombers Sig!

Thanks Scott. I'm hoping to get this one finished before the Wellington arrives from Airifx. Build no.2 for the Bombers Sig, as long as it gets here on time!

Loving this kit! Have I mentioned that before! It's one of the best scores (that's two Ayrton Sennas, or four McGyvers for all the non-Brits!!) I've spent on a model for as long as I can remember.

Next, onto the camo - dark earth and dark green courtesy of Vallejo Model Air. Dark earth first, sprayed roughly in the right places, after masking up the underside.





Wiggly white worms ready for the green. I almost free-handed the camo, but all of the reference pics I've seen, the demarcation of the colours is quite sharp and at 32nd scale, I didn't want it to be too blurry.





Luckily, I remember to mask up for the band on the tail. Phew! Then, some white was added to the brown and sprayed on to add some fading etc. Looks quite extreme in places, but this will calm down once the post shading is done and the matt will help to tie it all in. Hopefully! And three coats of Klear to lock the colours down.



Decals next, and I've got to say, I was a bit worried, as at first sight, they seemed a little thick. I needn't have worried as they went down a treat. Even after just the Micro Set, they were nestling down nicely and hugging all of the lumps and bumps.





I can't praise these decals highly enough, they really bedded down nicely with only one pass of Micro Sol. Every rivet (and there's a lot on this model!!), and panel line stood out nicely without having to be teased into view with the old cocktail stick.



And that pic was taking literally minutes after the first coat of M-Sol!

Almost finished with all of the decals and stencils. Landing gear, flaps, props and all the other gubbings are painted up ready to go on, so after a bit of post shading and weathering, I'll call this one done.

Also, how in the name of Bonaparte's balls have you done this so quickly? People are still commenting on your recent bomber SIG build, now all of a sudden you've rocked up with a big-ass Spitfire!

Shucks! You're too kind! It really is the decals though, they really are that good. As for getting it done quickly, this thing just builds itself. You turn your back for a couple of hours and another bit is done!

Well it's finished! What's the problem, I hear you cry!? Well, the Wellington still hasn't arrived and I've got nothing to do now!!!
That's not strictly true, my WSS Grenadier still needs finishing and I've got a couple of old projects that need some finishing touches, but I'm a bit of a oddball as far as scale modellers go. I don't have a stash!!!

No seriously! I have a Dragon Initial Tiger and a Dragon Panzer IV Wirbelwind and that's it. I tend to only buy kits that I know that I'm going to build and I then.....well......build 'em.

In the meantime, here's the final pics of the build.

Underside with some post shading. Heavily diluted VMA black, about 80/20.



And with smoke stains and the flaps on.

And here she is with Tamiya's 1/48 scale I built earlier this year.



The funny thing is, I bought the Tamiya kit back in March of this year and up until then I had only built one other plane, a Mossie for a "Wooden Wonder" SiG that was being hosted here on ISM. Since finishing that kit, I seem to have gotten the bug for aircraft!!



I'll try and get some decent pics posted in the reveal section.

I have this kit with some resin extras like the Brassin Cockpit and Baracuda correction kit. After your thread on here it is shooting up my build list. I have not done a 1/32 plane before this looks like a really great place to start.
