#40 Ju88a4 Revell 1/72

Hey guys,
I am a bit late in starting this but I was holding out on starting till my exams are over but all done now and time to start!

I will be building the Ju88 in 1/72nd scale from Revell. This kit has very good detail so this will be an OOB build.

The Ju 88 was a German World War II bomber. The Ju88 was a very versatile plane being not only used as a level bomber but also as a dive bomber and a torpedo bomber.

During the war the Ju88 became one of the Luftwaffe's most important aircraft. The assembly line ran constantly from 1936 to 1945 and more than 16,000 Ju 88s were built in dozens of variants, more than any other twin-engine German aircraft of the period.

Absolutely. Welcome to the SIG mate. There's a squadron of JU-88s on here so you're in good company. Good luck with your build and get stuck in with some comments on the other offerings on show here.

Had a look at the other builds and seems like I was the last of the Ju88s to struggle back to base after another failed attack on London
Hopefully this build will fare a bit better than some of the Ju88s did during the battle of Britian.

Update 1- Cockpit

Hey guys.
To start of the build I began with the cockpit. The detail is superb out of the box, the best I have seen on a 1/72nd aircraft thus far. The fit was also excellent and the construction simple. Great fun so far!

I jumped around the instructions a bit so that I could get as much stuck down whilst still allowing myself space to paint. If I had followed the steps shown in the instructions, the cockpit would have been impossible to paint.

I also added some small extra details by drilling out some holes and the headrest on one of the gunners seats.









After finishing building the cockpit I basecoated everything with Tamiya xf-1 flat black using an airbrush.



After base coating, I tried to recreate the RLM 66 colour used in the Ju88 by mixing together Tamiya xf-2 flat white and Mr Hobby aqueous H305 USAF gray. I then sprayed at a downwards angle onto the already black painted parts. This allowed me to create artificial shadows as some of the far recessed areas remain painted black.This gives a 3D effect. The RLM 66 colour may seem a bit light but that was to allow for it to become darker after washes.

Nice start !! Your RLM 66 is quite better than the Vallejo one I used for mine ! I think it's gone be quite good and better than mine !! I'm bit ahead of you and have fit issues when closing the cockpit. Hope you don't have the same problem

Thank you very much Garion, I didn't realise someone else was building the same kit as me.
Your cockpit looks like they got the real thing and shrunk it, I wouldn't worry about the dark colour it looks great to me. The aftermarket on top off the already great kit really makes a treat for the eye

Welcome back to the second build update of the 1/72 Revell Ju88.
Between the last update and now, alot of work has been done and I am now happy to say the cockpit is now finished.

The first step was to begin detail painting the cockpit. For this purpose I used Revell aqua colour acrylic paints, I find them far better than the Tamiya or Mr Hobby I use for airbrushing.



For the wooden sections of the floor I first painted the area with flat white. After that had dried, I used a stiff bristle brush and burnt sienna oil paint to replicate the wood sections.



After finishing painting I added some homemade seatbelts made from tamiya masking tape then painted. They look nowhere near as good as aftermarket but in such a small scale it is hard to make them out anyway

It was then time for weathering. On this model I decided to keep it light, using only a wash. However before using the wash I spray 2 coats of Alclad aqua gloss to protect the paint underneath.



I used an enamel product from AK Interactive called "paneliner". It is a great product and easy to use. The consistency is somewhere inbetween a homemade oil wash and a tamiya panel line wash.

I used a large brush to apply it all over the cockpit then left it to dry for a few minutes...
After drying I used a cotton bud and a small amount of enamel thinners to remove the excess.

One month left in the sig

Hey guys,
Welcome to the final update for the ju88 build.Unfortunately due to poor time management throughout the sig I have been unable to finish the build, however, I haven’t gone out without a fight!


Over the last week I made a final charge and atleast got paint and decals down for a form of final reveal.

If you are interested in seeing the kit finished I will put the rest of the build up on the builds section.

Anyway, at the end of the last update the cockpit was complete. The first job after that was to mask off the clear parts. I majorly underestimated how much glass there was in this kit! Took longer to mask the damn stuff than build the cockpit. However it does make the rest of the build much easier.Before sticking the cockpit on, machine guns were also painted and glued in.

After that the main construction came next. This mostly went without a hitch, the kit being fantastically engineered, however a small amount of filler was needed on various areas Around the kit. Consequently this then needed rescribing however it was not a problem.

After construction was completed then it was onto painting. I started off with a dark grey base coat. Firstly, as an interior colour for the glass,and secondly as a form of pre shading.

Then I masked off the yellow sections and sprayed a base coat of white followed with a top coat of yellow.

This was then masked off and the underside sprayed with Mr hobby aqueaous RLM 65.

Finally this was then masked off and the top Camouflage sprayed in two stages. The lighter green, followed by masking, then the darker green.

Then it was a return to the underside to add the white observation markings underneath.

To prepare this for decals the model was then sprayed with a few coats of aqua gloss. This then followed by a few basic decals to finish this bird off for now.








Sorry for the long update guys and for being unable to finish. However thanks to Twokidsnosleep for organising and running this great sig. Also thanks to everyone else who followed the build and left encouraging comments.

Hello guys,

Welcome to the final build update and final reveal for the excellent, Revell Ju88.
Apologies for the lack of pictures but I was in the zone and couldn't stop.

The first step, however, was to apply a "sludge" wash of black oil paints. This technique involves covering the entire model with a coat of black oil paint, not as thin as a regular wash, then waiting for it to dry before wiping off the excess with tissues and cotton buds.

I used this technique rather than a normal pin wash as it not only highlights detail, but also acts as a filter to blend colours and simulate grime.



After that I applied some soot streaks to the engines and nearby surfaces uing an airbrush and heavily thinned Tamiya Xf-1.



As can also be seen in the photo, was the light rust pigments I applied to the exhausts then fixed using pigment fixer.

Finally, on top, created a few oil streak with black oil paints.

This concluded the weathering, lighter than usual this time, but I think it looks fine as is.

That is the build completed very enjoyable build overall with a fantastic kit. Only downside was being unable to finish it for the SIG but atleast its finished now.
