Velociraptors on the prowl

Hi guys
I decided to start something new just after i finished building my entries for the bomber sig
This time something completely different to what i am used to be doing
I bought a set of Velociraptors last week
Yes the dinosaurs
It is a pack of 6 of them so i figired that could make for a nice little diorama
More so because of all the Jurassic park movies that have been on tv lately (in the Netherlands anyway)
So that will be the inspiration for the build

But first let's take a look at what i have so far

2 identical sprues

All the cleaned up parts
Even though you get 1 sort of sprue they allow you to make 6 different rapotors by combining different front and rear legs

After about 20 minutes of sticking parts together they look like this
The rock like bases are just for painting purposes
I will remove the raptors once they are painted

A close up of each raptor
After this i primed them and left them to dry

So now the painting can begin
And then the diorama
Allthough that will be fairly small but i want to make a little jungle scene where these raptors will be hunting
Maybe i will add some water and i want to try to make several plants and stuff like that
I also want to try something new and that is to preserve real plants with the use of glycerine
But i need to find some more information about that first

The kit isn't bad actually
Even for a cheap kit from 1994
They look way better then the T-Rex i have
That will become a complete rebuild i think as it looks more like Godzilla then a T-Rex

So just a little update as these little monsters are far from finished but atleast they are getting a bit of color
In the end i found a set of concept art drawings of the 4 raptors from the Jurrassic World movie so i decided to give those a go

Now at this point they have just their basic markings/colors
But then i started to play around with some Tamiya smoke to darken them a bit

I think i need to repaint the blue as that has become darker then i wanted
But overall i like this color of the skin

Charlie changed quite a bit after some thin layers of earth brown
The light blue was subdued by the brown wich is something i hoped for as the blue was a bit too strong

Delta bacame much darker then before but i found out i picked the wrong basecolors
They where too light

And Echo remained close to what it was before
Just a bit darker


And now i plan on painting all the small and fine lines in the markings
Once that is done i will start with the details like the eyes and claws

The smoke is a nice paint to have
I use it on all kinds of builds allthough mostly for toning things down or adding some depth in exhausts of jets and ofcourse exhaust staining

Time for a wee little update as this build is finished by now
But most of the work that was left was for the base

Allthough the raptors wheren't done yet

I started out with the eyes
A yellow base with a black line as the iris/pupil sort of like a cat's eye

The same color was used in the mouth
The teeth are painted in a off white
Then the eyes and mouth where given a skin wash by Vallejo

Then the nails where painted
A medium brown base wich wash dry brushed with smoke
Both colors are Vallejo paints

The finished photo's are a bit dark ,so sorry about that

The display case
It is from the well known swedish furniture store and called sinas if i am correct

A test setting to get an idea of what i wanted to do
I added some aquarium stones and a root of some sort to make the tree

A layer of birdcage sand and some stones where added to the foam

I then added a second layer of sand with smaller and larger pieces in it

But a closer look made me think this was way to course
Still makes for a good base but not the toplayer

So i added another layer
This time it is a very fine sand

I then started painting it
I didn't even wait for the sand wich was mixed with carpenters glue and water to dry
I used a earth tone first and then a coat of sand (dessert sand) from Vallejo modelair

The root that i was going to use for the tree was a very light yellowish color
To make it look a bit darker i sprayed it with Mig productions earth wash
This dries up in seconds with that dry surfaces it has to adhere on so that went pretty fast
Smells terrible though ,putting washes through the airbrush

I then thinned some Vallejo buff (modelcolor) and srayed that a bit randomly over the sand

And finally some dry mud pigments by Mig prod. to finish the sand

To add some vines to the tree (nice jungle touch if you ask me) i used soe strands from Magnolia's from the gardening centre
It is used for flower pots and such to decorate the soil in there

I then used seafoam trees from Heiki (model railroad brand) wich i cut up in pieces to make the branches and leaves

Some static grass was added

Then some still water by Vallejo
That didn't work so well as it ran off the base

So i used Vallejo water texture gel the second time
It takes longer to dry in such a thick layer but it works

The raptors where cut from their stones wich i only used for painting
Then i glued a metal wire in one of the feet and put them on the still wet and soft base

And then i left it for about a week to dry
That was how long it actually took to dry
Well the water any way the base was as hard as a rock after a day

Thank you , i have a T-Rex kit aswell but that looks really bad
I haven't got a plan for it yet but i think i will end up remodelling it to another dino

I like the tree aswell ,the only downside is that i used all the pre made seafoam trees i had for it
But it was a fun little scene to build
