My first go at an aircraft in natural metal finish, need to pay much more attention to getting the surface scratch free next time. Will try and post some better photos when I get a chance.

Paints are mostly AK extreme metals, polished aluminium for most of the fuselage with panels picked out in dark aluminium, duraluminum and titanium. Weathering is dark dirt wash and oils.

Brilliant that is exactly how I was planning on attempting my first metal finish plane. One further question, though. Did you use any clear coats on it before/after the washes and oils?

You defiantly need a gloss coat over the polished aluminium its really fragile and rubs off back to the gloss black base really easily, was hoping to decal without gloss coating but all I ended up doing was creating a massive headache for myself as I had to try and respray the metal around the decals. The other metal colours seem a bit more durable.

No wish I had though as the polished aluminium rubbed away back down to the gloss black which made trying to repaint those parts interesting as I had to work around the decals, it was gloss coated afterwards before the wash was applied. I'm not sure if its just the polished aluminium colour that's so fragile as the other AK metals didn't seem to wear through though as I understand high shine metal colours tend to be much less durable than other metal colours whichever brand you use.

I will bear that in mind, I have always gone a bit crazy with gloss coats, I always apply after that initial first coat, befor decals after decals. I will probably follow the same rule when I apply aluminium. Think your right about metal coats tho they seem to be very thin coats, and I've been told to leave for 24 hrs between coats to stop the masking tape damaging the paint. Anyway will do my best. The conversation about metallic colors caught my attention - I was battling the same problem for some time. The only ones that are resilient enough to stand masking are the lacquers from Alclad. The enamels and acrylics have a tendency to exfoliate or to rub off. Another solid paint is the enamel from Rust-oleum, but the metallic pigment is too big and hence difficult to airbrush and looks odd in scale. The only suitable clear coat I found for metallic enamel / lacquers it's polyurethane.
I'm not sure my experiences are the best though
