1/20 Fujimi Williams Renault FW14B 1992 F1 Car

Post by CaptainBigelow »

I finished this last month but thought I would post up a few pics to share with the group.
  • Kit manufacture: Fujimi
    Scale: 1/20
    Type: Williams Renault FW14B  - 1992 Mansell #5
Extras used:  Indycals.net  Camel decals - kit does not include them due to ban on tobacco advertising.
Paints and colours used: Tamiya TS-34 Yellow, TS-26 White, Gunze H-5 Blue, various metallics and Tamiya for rest. The body was clear coated with MRP 2K
    Other info: none
    Weathering: none
My first F1 car build. I wanted to do the iconic Williams in the 1992 blue, yellow and white from the year Nigel Mansell raced with Williams and won the World Championship. This has always been my favorite F1 car livery. This Fujimi kit was very nice. Good detail with full internals etc. I think it is probably a better kit and more detailed than the 1/20 Tamiya version. I made a few boo boos along the way. Which included screwing up one of the large Renault decals and then I broke one of the front wishbone arms while trying to get the wheel on. I managed to superglue it all back together but made a mess on the nice paintwork.

The only real negative with the kit was that all the instructions were in Japanese with no translation. A couple of parts there were some text explaining what to do and not understanding a word of Japanese I had to figure it out myself. The kit came with a couple of simple decals for the seat belts. I left them off and may had a fabric seat belt set in the future.

This car kit kicked my butt and really tested my skills. I think it was probably the three colors. If I went with something like a Ferrari where the whole thing is just painted red, it would have probably been a lot easier of a build.  The kit did come with a mask set which helped out a lot. I am very happy overall. Although I enjoyed doing this for a change, I do not think I will be rushing out and doing another F1 car anytime soon. To be honest I found my Impreza rally car (which I built right before this kit) a little more enjoyable of a build. Not quite so taxing with the painting and I could do a little weathering at the end.

That's looks great for your first F1 kit. I did the Tamiya Ferrari F189 and it was definitely a challenge - and as you mentioned, it was one color.
Nice job! :cheers2:

Nice build of a nice kit.

That car with Nigel driving was a hoot to watch...

Very, very nice

All the more impressive as if this kit is anything like my 917 Fujimiu, the fit and moulding of parts was terrible!

Thanks all for the kinds words.

The fit wasn't too bad Kev, the kit went together well.
