U.N. Leclerc weathering advice

Post by GPalileo »

Hello everyone!

This is my first post here on the forums, so I'll keep it short. I'm a novice modeler who normally works in 1/72 scale. I'm about to assemble Revell's 1/72 Leclerc T.5, and I'd like to paint and weather it up in U.N. colors ("colors" being just white ;) ). I've never painted any white vehicle prior to this, but I'm primarily worried about getting all the weathering right. Would it be better to lay down a base coat of pure white, or should I mix it in with something in order to fade it down a bit? The dust buildup on these vehicles appear to be dark brown/reddish in color, so what pigment mixtures could one recommend? And what color could I use to dry brush the finished white?

I'm sorry if these questions seem basic or complete nonsense, but I haven't seen many tutorials or posts regarding U.N. paint schemes, and I would really like to improve my general weathering skill-set.

Thank you!

Hey GPalileo,
I dont know if you have an airbrush, but if you do, trying a pure white base to start. Then after that add a few drops of grey to make it a bit darker, then spray the darker white onto the edge of the panels whilst leaving the pure white on the top like a highlight. This is called colour modulation, you can find videos about it on youtube. :thumb2:

As for the pigments, I dont really know. You could maybe try and test a few different ones on the bottom of the tank to see which one you like best.

For the drybrushing I think dark grey could be good to show the contrast and make the details stand out.

Hope that helped a bit, James :cheers2:
