Real Life Weathering Reference Shots...

Here are a few shots I took at this years Overlord show of a great subject (can't remember for life of me what it is!) with medium use weathering, which had been kept outside. I was told this had seen action and hadn't been restored. I'm dubious of thet but, I'm probably wrong

As you can see it has some great rust and rust stain patterns with plenty of chipping and fading This will give you a good reference for weathering pretty much any military vehicle.

I´m very inspired by those pictures, thank you for sharing them It is cool to see such weathering in real life from time to time and not only on models, this helps to get a sense for realistic weathering effects. If i can find similar pictures am i allowed to contribute them right here?

It looks like A BRDM2. Not 100% sure but confident it is a BRDM

Great references for rusting and fading!! But I have to say that most active duty vehicles would never become this rustic. But for a museum piece and reference material it's a great source.

Brilliant pictures.
This though was what I was going on about yesterday with a fellow ISM.
Modellers do have such a choice of weathering products now and I think sometimes that a tendency is "well the model is painted as per instructions, lets bang on every bit of weathering that I can find in my box to give it the effect required".
Think about the country that the AFV was produced in (Russian AFV are good but tend to be manufactured on the basic mode).
British tanks and by the nature of British MT Staff Sergeants belly-aching all the time, tend to be well kept (obviously on exercise or in theatre of war its different) and painted and loved. Same for US.
Just from experience and driving AFV. British tanks do not have rust. Nope! It maybe somewhere but its covered up with paint....
But in the field your constantly checking engines (scratches around access hatches with tools and boots), Oil and grease on grease nipples on wheels and engine oil gets all over the place (oh to be able to recreate a oily hand on a sheet of metal ). Any stop we made with vehicles be they 432, Chally, Warrior......out came Grease Gun and cloths and spanners and Track tools. These hunks of metal are required to be treated well.
If the area is dry i.e. season or climate then mud is not going to appear.
Its a hell of an area with weathering. But I think (just my opinion ) that the best reference is these type of pictures and using your eyes to look at natures way of distributing materials on vehicles, planes and ships.
