I have yet to build a WW2 Russian tank! Which one would you pick and why? I'm not into aftermarket so it would need to be a decent OOB kit.

Any of the Trumpeter 1/35 KV-1/KV2 kits. Accurate with great detail out of the box and simple to build. They are also cheap and very cool, particularly the KV-2.

Typo ... Bronco ... and as Dave says it builds enjoyably and doesn't have a lot of PE. A track tool to help assemble the tracks with working suspension.
This is the best kit of the Su-152 and easy to follow instructions.

Steelscooter mentions the Trumpeter 1/35 KV-1/KV2 kits... you can't go wrong with these. Don't have the better suspension and tracks though and are missing some interior details where as the Bronco kit as some interior parts. They both have 2 piece barrels if I remember correctly.

Both look great when finished.

Hobbyboss kits can be a little up and down. They do a lot of Russian tanks of WW2 and the early war.

Dragons kit of the T-34 with bed spring armor is definitely on my wish list. A bit more PE work involved with this one, but a great kit too.

The Miniart SU-122 looks like a very nice kit aswell
Again full interior but i think they also have one without the interior
But i have to say i didn't build that one yet ,it still is in the stash and it isn't really a tank

And that are about the only kits that come to mind at the moment
I made and have some other Soviet tanks but those are all post WWII

What the guys said above. For T34 try and get a Dragon kit if you find one. Sometimes the German captured variant comes up and you can use as a base kit.

Just don’t buy the Tamiya 1/35 kits!

I’m leaning towards a KV-2 but I’m still researching.

The KV-2 is a pretty nice one aswell
I had one but that had a terrible accident and was beyond repair
But there are some very intresting Russian/Soviet vehicles
Allthough i am currently more intrested by the post war vehicles then the WWII stuff

Tamiya's T-34 kits aren't all that bad, if you get the photo-etched mesh kit for it. Certainly you could build and paint one of those in a matter of hours.
I'm particular to Academy's T-34 kits though, they're much cheaper than Dragon's offerings and they come with everything you need to make a decent T-34.

Trumpeter's KV-1 and KV-2 kits are good too, of course.

Got to agree, the Dragon T34 is a great kit, but for me it's the Trumpeter KV-2. That huge turret gives plenty of options for weathering!
