1/48 Kittyhawk Sukhoi Su-17/22 UM3K Fitter

This will be my next build, Kitty hawk’s 1/48 Su-22UM3K.
The scheme will be in the Polish AF’s 305 “Black Boar” special markings
Aftermarket used will be;
Eduard PE cockpit set
Eduard seat belts
Eduard canopy mask set
HAD Models resin FOD cover set
ModelMaster pitot and fun barrel set
Model Maker 305 “Black Boar” decal set

Seats are nearly done. Very well detailed for kit supplied seats, and there’s a lot of parts to them. Painted the seat frame with black primer, and then details picked out with Hataka Blue Line paints.
Seat padding is Orange Line Sky Type S, with some AK Smoke pigment used to “dirty” it up.
Just the Eduard PE belts to attach.
The HAD Models resin FOD covers were painted with Blue Line Pure Orange. The Blue Line thinned a lot with Hataka acrylic thinners. The FOD’s will receive a small amount of weathering.
Finally, I repainted the Eduard cockpit set’s console panels, as the pre-printed colour had a pink hue, which didn’t look right. So I hand painted them with Blue Line Light Ghost Grey (note the colour testing on the outer frame).

Attached the etched belts, and applied a couple of decals, from the Airscale labels/placards decal sheet, to the headrest sides. Then finished off with a dry-brush of aluminium.
Also made a start on the instrument panels. The main IP’s are done. The PE panels are a very good fit.

Did you see Spencer Pollard's YouTube review and build commentary on the M3/4 version? It helped me avoid potential pitfalls with the complicated fuselage assembly and a few other areas.

The cockpit is now together, and given a light wash. Very pleased with the way it's turned out. The Eduard PE has really lifted the detail.
I have also got the fuselage section together. Completely disregarding the instructions, I cemented the sections, to make 2 traditional "halves". I have also used some thick plastic strip, cemented inside at the joints, to add some strength.
The black, on the upper most half, is where I have filled, and sanded out the cannon blast shield, which isn't present on the UM3K Fitters. Then it was primed with some Stynylrez primer.

Cockpit tub now installed. A bit of filler here and there, but it’s in.
All the wheel bays have been painted, and weathered. Same with the wheel bay doors and airbrakes.
The starboard gun barrel has been replaced with a metal MasterModel item, and the port gun opening has been filled with some 1mm plastic rod.

So, all the scoops and antenna are attached. Also the fixed parts of the canopy are cemented in place.
The MasterModel pitots are really beautiful pieces of metal and resin. They are dry fitted for now. I’ll fix them permanently at the end.
I’ve made the swing wings removable, which makes things so much easier for painting and weathering. I simply cut open the locating hole, in the swing wing. So now they click on and off the main wing’s locating pin.
Prior to being primed with Ultimate black, the airbrake interior has been coated with Maskol.

Weapons pylons are now painted, and some masking was done to paint the bare metal areas.
A few light coats of Aqua Gloss was airbrushed on, and when that was fully dried, I made a start on the decals.
I’ve got the main markings applied, and am now looking forward to the pleasure of dozens of stencils!!

After a gloss coat, the decals are done.
Loads of stencils, but there's still less than Phantom!

I’ve been wanting to build this example for a few years now, but firstly there was no 1/48 Su-22UM3, nor the decals in 1/48 either. Luckily that all changed.

All the decals and stencils are finished. I’ve applied a couple of light coats of matt varnish, to seal them.
A mid-grey Ammo panel line wash has been applied.
The fuel tanks have been attached, and the undercarriage is dry fitted , just allow standing the Fitter for now.
I’ve also fitted the airbrakes, in a slightly open position.
On the top of the nose, and along the dorsal spine, I made some new antenna, to reflect the ones currently seen on Fitters.

Almost finished.
All the undercarriage attached. FOD covers and pitots fitted. Dark pigment was used to create wear marks, where the swing wings move in and out of the main wing root.
And a final coat of matt was airbrushes to finish off.

Ian, that black paint is really good, it could so easily have looked like a black slab, the orange(red) really lifts the whole piece

As John said earlier the finish on the black is just stunning - is that simply the Ultimate Black Primer with the various gloss/matte coats on top or did you put down another layer that I've missed?

Confession : I clicked this thread, not because its a Jet (not my bag), but because its a `Kittyhawk`, and i was interested to see just what a horrendous bag of marbles was going to be in the box
Erm ... turned out great, cant spot any major `Do Not Buy` issues, and no mention of any hammer inducing problems from either you or the comments.
Just goes to show. Well done sir.
