Hi guys and girls
So as i voted for a WWI GB last uear in the polls it seems fitting that i actually join the GB
I was going to build a tank but as my brain had a massive brain fart earlier this year i managed to build that tank allready
So yesterday at the KMK Scaleworld modelling show i was looking for something to build
And i came across this kit

The kit has 3 infantrymen and 2 officers
The men are climbing out of their trench for the impending attack while the officers signal the start of that attack

Then there is this ICM sprue with all the gear
I'm not that well informed about the weapons of the British army at that time but it looks like the regular webbing gear and the Lee-Enfield MarkIII SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield)
And some Webley revolvers and a Lewis gun

They are identical so i will just show 1

The plan
When i think of WWI or the Great War the first thing that comes to mind are trenches
Miles and miles of trenches (should say kilometers ,the Dutch don't use miles )
And in fact this was true
The trenches went all the way from Switserland to the English channel
Ofcourse there where gaps but still there where lots of them
And those trenches became home to millions of soldiers on both the Allied side (British ,French, Commonwealth and later American troops) and the side of the Central powers (German empire and the Austro Hungarian Empire)
So i was thinking about a trench scene anyway i just didn't know what untill i bought something
But now i do
I will not use the kit trench but instead i will scratch build one
To me the kit trench looks too new
No damaged walkways of boards on the side to keep the mud out
The sandbags are placed in a neat little line
And besides that the the trench is quite open on all sides
In real life trenches where often dug out in a rush as they needed to be made in recently taken territory before the enemy counter attacked

So for the trench i will be using this

A ceramic vingette base by Add on parts wich is about 20x20 cm square and build a new trench on that
This way i can use actuall sand ,but also make stuff like sandbags and barbed wire
I also want to include the entrance of a shelter or observation post to close up one end of the trench
All the other stuff can be made using balsa wood and various other materials

The history part
I'm nkt going to bore you with badly told story about the times of the Great War
Instead i will point out the Youtube channel The Great War
That is the channel that got me intrested in WWI in the first place
It is a week by week report of the war on all fronts and even the home fronts and all kinds of background stories like the rise of the Soviet movement (they came to be in those days)
But also videos about the firearms or vehicles of those days
And even trips to the actuall sites like Anzac cove
Each week there is a new video about what happened 100 years ago
So i think it is well worth the efford of looking in to it
I tend to start one of the playlists when i am modelling (i needed to catch up with 3 years of the war ) and i find it pretty intresting to see what happend all those years ago

So that is the intro of my entry
I will be building the figures today and hope to get them primed and start on the trench a bit
Even if it is just preparing the sides and make some of the wooden parts i want in there
So i hooe to be back with some progres soon

They look okay
Not resin quality but i can work with them
I have seen worse
So far the only thing i noticed where the seamlines but you get that with all the styrene figures

I am working on the trench at the moment
I started out with the ceramic base and made some styrene walls for the outside of the scene
Now i am cutting up a lot of balsawood for all the wooden parts wich i hope to have finished tonight and give them a bit of color to make them look worn
And maybe i will start filling in the scene so i can add the sand and mud

Can’t wait to see what you make out of these
Quite amazed that they all have their shirts done up to their necks and no extra mammary appendages are protruding out
There I made up for not commenting on the other thread now

I think it is time for the first update on this little build
Mainly because at this point all of the construction is done and i actaully started to work on the painting

So what happened so far

I started out by making some walls on the base
They are just plain and simple styrene sheets that where cut to the size i wanted and glued together

And look at my super fancy drawing skills
I basicly marked where i wanted the walkway to be and where the shelter entrance will go

I then started to cut all the pieces of wood using various sizes of balsa wood
Like 1mm sheets for the boards and 5 mm for the poles

Then the walkway was placed
I glued to coffee stirrers to the base and then glued the small strips of balsawood on the stirrers

To make the side walls a bit stronger i used 2 larger pieces of balsa wood as a backing for the boards

Then the boards and poles where glued to the sheets

With another sheet of balsa wood i repeated that proces to make the shelter entrance

And a roof was added
I didn't add any detail on there because it will be covered with soil later on
So any work would be covered up

I then made a very basic ladder as the kit ladder was too short
My trench is a bit deeper the kit trench
And a step so soldiers could peek over the top and shoot

One laat thing i did but didn't take a photo of was to add some masking tape to the holes around the styrofoam filling and the sides
Just to fill in the gaps so not too much of the sand will fall in those holes when i start adding the soil in the scene
Maybe it is good to mention that all the wooden parts except for the shelter roof and the walkway are still not glued in
This will make painting and weathering a lot easier
Once they are done i will glue them to the base and start to add the soil
Stuff like wet mud effects and some puddles can be added later on as the mix of white glue ,water and sand needs to be dry first
Then i need to make sure the areas where i want puddles are water tight and then i can add the final water effects
Sounds pretty posh to make it water tight but basicly it means i will brush in some carpenters glue in the holes for the puddles and let that dry for a day
Then i can add some drops of Vallejo still water in them without having to worry about that stuff sinking in the soil
That happened a few times allreasy with older builds


And to prepare the last little bit for painting

My army of 5
Judging by the looks of them there is one high ranking officer (he has a cap) and 1 lower ranking officer with 3 infantrymen (they all have helmets)

So once the figures where ready i drilled some holes in their boots and glued some metal wire in the holes to make sure i can paint them without touching the figure itself
Then the figures and the outside of the base where primed in grey Ammo primer and the base was painted with Tamiya flat black once the primer was dry

And that is where this build is at right now
Next time i hope to have the base finished wich means to weather up the wooden boards with some washes and add the soil with all the stuff i want to add to it and the water/mud i want to add
Then i will be painting the figures and add the last bits of detail on them like some slings for the guns and some wire for the officers revolver ,i forgot the name but they have a rope that is attached to a loop on the bottom of the gun and to their uniform so they can't drop the revolver on the ground

So that is all for now

It is a fairly easy build
All you really need are some scratch build materials like balsa wood and some foam as filler
I actually wanted to do a single larger figure but those where a bit on the expensive side
Well more expensive then what i am willing to pay for a single 90mm figure anyway

I find the differences in figure scales confusing, kind of like train scale
Heck of a lot easier painting a 1/32 figure than a 1/72, that I know

No this is a 1/35 kit
Figures from the real figure brands like Ares ,Nocturna and Andrea use different scales then brands with vehicles
Some are about the same though
54 mm scale is about the same as 1/32
70 mm scale is the same as 1/24
120 mm is 1/16
So 90 mm would roughly be 1/20 based on the average height of a man being a out 1.80 meters or 6 feet devided by 20

Train scales are a different matter
They have scales that are way different then static display models

Would this figure go in well with the 1/32 scale aircraft we are doing or be noticeably too small?
I copied and pasted your figure sizing for future reference into my notepad

1/35 would be a bit small
They would look a bit out of scale i think
Atleast when they are close to a 1/32 plane or other figure
Then the height wouldn't be the biggest issue but parta like the head would look quite small
Or if you want a short guy in a scene then it could work
All in all the difference between a 1/32 and 1/35 figure is about 2 or 3 mm

I hooe to get a couple of things done in the next few days but it depends on my workdays
Mostly at what ridiculous time i get home
But if i can get the wooden parts done today i can start with the dirt once that is in it needs to dry for atleast a day

I've loved the Masterbox kits that I've used so far so really looking forward to seeing you work your magic on the figures Mark!

I didn't realise they put scenery in them as well so will have to keep an eye out for those - great work on getting the trench section together so quickly and I might have to nick your walkway process too

Looks like fun! I've always liked seeing figures-only dioramas.

I haven't used many of them yet
Only 1 or 2 older ones
This set is okay but i had to do some filling wich was easy with some home made filler (the molten sprue goo)
But their sets seem to be all over the place as to what can be in them
I also have the Band of Brothers set with all the guys on a Sherman and that has a lot of figures for one kit
So i guess it really depends on the set as for what you get but it is mentionned on the box that this one has a trench in the kit
Allthough it looks really basic but that is why i decided to build a new one

I haven't done a lot with diorama's the past 2 years but i like making some stuff from scratch
This would be one of my first figure only builds though
I think i did one in the past and that was with some resin figures in a larger scale

Time for a new update as there has been enough progres that i can't touch this build for a day ...the base anyway , i can work on the figures

So what happened since last time

I did some testing using Mig productions washes
I tried dark wash , brown wash and wood aging
My choise was the brown was
But because i spilled some ca glue in the building stages i had to paint it first (washes can't hold on to smooth ca glue stains)
I used Vallejo modelcolor light brown for that
Once it was dry the wash was applied directly on the paint

Well the water needs time to dry
I will be making a start on the figures but as their uniforms have the same colors as a bust i was working on months ago i decided to grab that as well and make sure i get most out of my paint by combing the efford of painting British uniforms
The colors in both WWI and WWII where either the same or very close to eachother and i have the nasty habbit of dumping too much paint on the pallet anyway

They had to face some bad conditions indeed
Not just the shot up land but also disseaces like Spanish flu ,disytry and trench foot (among others)
On top of that a almost daily shower of artillery and mortar shells ,some with gas and people running towards you with rifles and bayonets
Not the best of times to say the least

I' like the way you have tackled this and picked up a couple of pointers too....It's looking better every time I look

It is a fairly easy scene to build
But at this point i want to make the sand a bit lighter ,i find it too dark and i am working on the figures
So i hooe to post a new update in the next couple of days if i can find enough time to spend at the bench

I think it is time for a new update on this build as there has been quite a lot of progres the last couple of days

I started out with a base coat of base flesh light from Andrea

To get shadows and a bit of a healthier look i thinned some Vallejo skin wash and applied that
Making sure it was a bit thicker in the places that i wanted shadows to be

Then it was time for the uniform wich is Vallejo English uniform

Then the bags (and ammo pouches on the other figures) where base painted in stone grey while the leather parts where painted in leather brown

The base color of the rifles is Vallejo's middlestone

Wich then is given a coat of Vallejo smoke
The uniforms where drybrushed with some of the stone grey to highlight them but this photo was taken after i applied a gloss coat so it is hard to see
I did this because i wanted to use a wash again
This time for the shadows in the uniforms and to highlight some details in the soldiers gear

Once the brown wash (mig prod.) was dry i flat coated the figures with Ultra matte varnish by AK
And i added some gunslings made with a strip of leadfoil and a strip of paper

The slings where then painted with some leather brown

The barbed wire was given a rust wash to make it look a bit older and not brand new

The soil was given a new color by adding mig prod. dark mud pigments to the very dark soil
And the puddles where given a bit more water

As you can see the water is still not dry ,it should be as Vallejo says it takes 24 hours to dry but for some reason it takes longer this time and i only used a very thin layer not even close to the 2mm maximum the advise you to use

So when the water is finally dry i will be taking some final reveal shots
But at this point i think it is finished on my part
I don't plan on adding anything anymore and all that is left is something i can't help as that takes time to dry

I think I would certainly consider Master Box, they do subjects not found elsewhere.

With a black and white sepia photo I bet it will be hard to tell if it wasn't an archival photo

Masterbox has some nice figure kits and like you say a bit different then others
For the price they are pretty good allthough a resin head may add a bit of detail

But the mud still proves to be a pain in the rear
It almost looks like the second layer reactivated the first layer and mixed
So it looks really dark and matte at the moment
Something i didn't want so now i am trying to figure out a way to improve it
My new plan is to seal the old layers with some paint(a color that i like) and varnish and use the water texture gel with some actuall water to thin it to make a smooth layer
But i never tested it that way so i don't know for sure if that will work
If not i will be digging out the old mud and start over with that bit

1 final unplanned update
The mud puddles didn't work out the way i wanted
It looked like the second layer reactivated the first as the second layer wich was just the Vallejo still water turned out identical to the first wich was mixed with some paint

So in the end i decided to use something that isn't acrylic based
After a quick check of my supplies i only found 1 product that was not acrylic and that was the damp and wet earth effects by Mig productions wich is basicly a thick glossy enamel clear coat

So this was the starting point

I then used some flat earth paint from Vallejo and applied that
Once dry i used a fairly stiff brush and a lot of water to get a very uneven finish
And again left that to dry

And then the Mig prod. product was applied by filling up the puddles with this varnish
I used a disposable pipette for this and this makes it easier to apply the product without spilling it

And then i could finally call it finished
It took about 4 days longer then planned but i really didn't like the muddy puddles i had the first 2 times

So that is the end of this build

Do you plan on making another entry for the GB? I think you have enough time and skill to bring another kit together whit details such as the puddles

No, i think this will be the only one for me
I have a Panther that i am building that needs to be done by 15th of october for a group build on facebook and i just started a new build wich will take a while
It is the M911 tractor with the M747 trailer and a D9R bulldozer so that will take up most of my time at the bench
And i don't have a lot of WWI kits
Well 1 actually and that is a Albatros DV ,so that involves rigging
Not really my strongpoint

Got those puddles sorted now and is she looking great.
