Finally retired and want to get back into a hobby that I last participated in probably 45 years ago. Have I missed anything since then??? Have watched hours and hours of your utube wideos and with credit card in hand I am ready to head to the Hobby Store.
Look forward to chatting and learning the new and latest techniques. Any advice is much appreciated.

You are no doubt amazed at the level of change.
As to buying stuff.... ONLY buy what you need. I bought so much that I don't use or need. A lot can be achieved with very little.
1 small flat pocket file.
1 heavy duty craft knife....exacto.
1 smaller craft knife
1 Tamiya extra thin cement ..... Some suer glue, and the cheap 1ml tube would be fine
2 masking tapes.... 10mm, 5mm
1 good quality tweezers with a parallel point .... Do not buy cheap or you will be forever looking for lost parts.
A variety of paint brushes
soft grip clothes pegs to use as clamps
1 good quality sprue cutter....do not use cheap side cutters as it damages the plastic. I now use Disipae sprue cutters.
If you are going to be using a lot of PE then a xuron PE cutter ( blue handle ). Tamiya also do good tools.

Paints are a different issue and sets can be bought that will do a particular subject at and when needed. Also brush painting compared to AB painting and types of paint will dictate what particular items will be needed. Thinners, brushes, gloss coats, metal paints, etc it is a huge subject.

In any case the stuff I have listed ( if I didn't forget something ) will be enough to finish a kit to a good standard. Advanced modeling may have a couple more extras.

Edson. Check out Hobby Wholesale in Edmonton. Decent selection, lots of paint and other supplies, and fairly good prices. I try to hit it when I'm in town, but they also do online ordering (free shipping over $85) and if you're early enough, you may be able to get your order the next day (I have!).
