When is Airfix newfix?

A quick question.
With Airfix re-releasing older kits with new tooling and getting rave reviews to boot, how can you tell the difference just from the box? You obviously can't keep opening boxes in a shop, and shopping online..... Am i missing something really obvious?? I would like a new tool Fairy Battle but can't imagine there's much of a demand...

The easiest way to be sure is to order direct from Airfix online. Just don't order from their Classic line!

There is no way of telling from the box alone. The best way is to go onto airfix's website and take a look at their kits there. If its a new boxing (which will mean new cartograf printed decals, new box art etc) it might say NEW next to it. However this will not mean its a new kit per se. It might however be a new offering of an old kit, perhaps in a scheme not seen before etc.

If its a new tooling it will say so on the website. That's why I try to keep up to date with their new releases, that way you know if your getting a modern kit or not.

I think that's what I'm gonna have to do Gav. I've just returned back to modelling and have completed a couple of older kits (Airfix Mustang and Revell Vampire), now I've started a Airfix Red Arrow Hawk, a new tool one......it's a revelation, all panel lines and detail! I don't want to make any more older kits thanks very much.

Looks like a really nice kit. You can never be sure of fit until you start putting it together but the signs are promising. Here is a shot of one of the sprues showing the ribbing detail on the upper and lower wings plus the radiator and engine cowlings. All nice crisp mouldings.

Nice.. Do you get rigging with it mate? If not what do you think you might use?

The rigging isn't supplied but there is a good rigging guide in the instructions. In the past I have used monofilament fishing line but I have found that to be less that successful as you can see here.



Other options are invisible thread or a product called EZ Line which is available from Models R Go. I plan on giving EZ Line a try on my next biplane build.

Search by name eg Gnat go to products select a kit and it will give you a timeline of that kit and links to any reviews that it can find.

The newer Airfix are much better quality, however I still enjoy making the vintage ones as well but know they will take a little more work.

Just adding, one advantage of buying from a local model store as opposed to buying online is sometimes you are allowed a look in the box, my LMS has a sign saying if you want to look inside box please ask, I took them up on that a few years ago when Airfix had the two 1/48 Buccaneers in a box, there was no way to tell looking at the exterior, the owner of shop let me look inside and gained a sale because it was the twin kit
