Well thought I would enter my first group build so I picked up the Roden Ablatros .
Not sure how it will go with my work schedule, and only recently started getting back into the hobby.
But what the hell, it is only a hobby.
Am I able to use the Eduard Brassin Spandau gun set in the build?
I will add photos once I get on my computer.
Don't seem to be able to reduce the photo size enough on my tablet.

The easiest way to upload images to your posts is using the image integration tool that's built in - it automatically resizes your photos for you. Best not to add them as attachments to your posts as they sap the bandwidth of the site.

Welcome to the party! I also just got back into the hobby and these group builds have been the best thing for it, they're a great motivator, and theres a lot of great helpful knowledgeable people willing to lend advise for problems if you need it. Happy building!

Nice choice and looking forward to the build.

Well opened up the sprew bag and started with the engine.
Removed the side of the engine that is supposed to have the spark plugs and found that 3 of the 6 plugs are broken off.
Not a real big deal to cut off the remaining and replace with 1mm rod, just hope this isn't a sign of what is to come.
Also seems to be quite a bit of flash.
Old kit I guess.

Already thinking maybe I should have got a WNW kit instead, but oh well I will see how this progresses.



I thought I would get the fuselage and wings cleaned up as well ready for priming.
Found the top wing has damage on the trailing edge.
If anyone has advice on how to fix this I would appreciate it.
I was thinking of building it up with sprew and using the bottom as a pattern to shape it with.



If a shop here in New Zealand had the WNW Manfred von Richthofen Albartros in stock I would have it on the way to my front door.

It will be pretty indicative of these kits...nice moulding detail, but fit and finish a bit lacking
For my Roden engine, I opened out all the holes and attatchments points to get things to seat in fully
You will be fine, just roll with the punches, test fit everything and work your magic to make it go together

In my stash I have 13 aircraft and The Roden Albatros D.III kit number 606 is one of them. So really interested to seen how this goes together.

I tell myself this so I don't spit the dummy, and have an Aussie draw a cartoon of spitting said dummy.
Doesn't stop me from spitting it.

I have spent more time cleaning flash and filling mold imperfections than I have actualy building.
But it is an old kit, would be interesting to see how a newer one compares.

I will order the WNW Albatros D.V

Its a real shame about the kit issues you've got mate

I did do/have done quite a bit of research for WW1 aircraft kits and Roden although make some really nice subjects their kits can be very hit and miss. Like you're suggesting WNW are the way to go, they're just way better than anything else out there at present if you want 1/32 WW1 aircraft and that does justify their cost, although for some pushes them beyond reach.

I opted for Eduard 1/48 as my experience building kits before moving on to WNW, but I'm sure your sort these issues out and build a great looking model

Not sure this is going to be anything worth looking forward to, just getting back into the hobby so pretty rusty and relearning. Looking at this kit, if it was better engineered and the molding was a higher quality, it should have been a pretty simple and quick build.
But it seems every step forward has 1 to 1 1/2 steps back.
I think I have worked out how to fix the upper wing, but it is very time consuming.
Not sure I would call this a build where so called basic modeling skills are enough (whatever they may be).
Thought I would dry fit the fulselage yesterday.
All I am going to say is that I will upload photos later.
If I manage to make a reasonable to half presentable job of this, my skills would have improved during the process, so that is a positive.
Pig headedness is just coming into now and this thing will get glued together, even if it doesn't want to or ressemble an Albatros D.1.
Don't think I will be buying another Roden kit after this.

Had to take a couple of steps back for a few days before I started thowing my toys out of the cot.


Did some work on the upper wing, not perfect but a damn site better than it was.
Ended up building the trailing edge with sprew goo. Then made a cardboard template to try and get it shaped evenly on both sides.
The paper towel doesn't show the shaping accurately.
I will see how it looks once I get some black primer on it and go from there.

Dry fitting the fuselage, I hope it isn't a sign of things to come. Maybe once I get the engine glued in place it will help everything line up better.

Got sick of cleaning, sanding, filling and sanding again.
Had to do somthing different so primed some psrts last night.
Decided to paint the water tank. Tried AK interactive True Metal for the first time and reasonably happy with the result.
I wanted a patialy tarnished brass look, can't see the brass kept all nice and shiney on a war plane.
Just dry brushed the paint on gradualy.

Man this one's fighting you back hard isn't it... nice work sorting out the trailing edges on the wings already though.

Hopefully you'll be able to get the fuselage knocked into shape as well.

BTW is your username a reference to the Brian Lumley books?

Yeah it is. The bin is still a possability.
Yes my user name is reference to the Brian Lumley book series.
Wish they would turn them into movies but probably too graphic and hollywood would stuff them up.

I think you're right about hollywood stuffing them up if they ever got their hands on them - not exactly prime Disney material. I need to dig them out and reread them again.

Keep making the model have it, it will look great once done.
Stiff upper lip don't you know.
