Great Wall Hobby 1/144th Avro Vulcan B.2

Post by Tamiyasnob »

Part two of my group buildIs this, probably the best kit in this scale, see what you think after the reiew shot,s.
Image
Really nice box art.
Image
The first thing you are greeted with is this exquiste one piece lower fuselage
Image
Close up of the panel detailing
Image
Sprue A, not a hint of flash anywhere !
Image
Sprue B, again flasless.
Image
Weapon,s, crystal clear transparencie,s and lovely detailed weapon,s
Image
Close up of the jet housing,s, note the location of the sprue gate,s, none of the mar the part,s in anyway.
Image
As with the lower fuselage, the upper is kept seperate from everything else in a seperate box.
Image
Unfortunately this did not prevent damage to one corner of the wing. Apparently this common with this kit, but is an easy fix if still a little annoying.
Image
Close up of the cockpit area, (seriously this is 1/144th)
Image
Decals and a display stand. Decals are for two aircraft involved in the 'Black Buck' raid,s
Image
1/1 scale colour chart, alway,s a nice touch. Colour call out,s are for Mr Hobby but are easily converted .
Image
Instuction,s are an A4 two page booklet, most of the dialouge is chinese ( I think) but constuction is straight forward enough.
Image

Hopefully this review has given you are fair idea of what this kit is like, but take my word for it, if you want a great small scale Vulcan the n this is it. Plus GWH are bringing out the refuelling version And I am sure the aftermarket boy,s will be all over this. So hope to start this next week when the Gannet build get,s a bit to intense, cheer,s Dave.

I have been wanting to see one of these built. Looks like a great kit, I have my eye on the refueling variant that is just being released.

Best of luck, I'm sure you will do the kit justice.

That's amazing plane !!

I haven't got many occasions to visit UK, but I was lucky enough to visit our main supporting software headquarters who are placed in Wellesbourne.
And one of the remaining Vulcans was there (I think it's stationed there) - I could almost... touch it :)

Looking forward to see it finished.

Regards,
Radek

OK here is some tech on the aircraft

Max. takeoff weight: 170,000 lb (77,111 kg)
Powerplant: 4 × Bristol Olympus 101, or 102 or 104 turbojet, 11,000 lbf (49 kN) each
Performance
Maximum speed: Mach 0.96 (645 mph ( 1038.03km/h)) at altitude
Cruise speed: Mach 0.86 (567 miles per hour (912 km/h)) at 45,000 ft

1 x Violet Club 400 kt nuclear gravity bomb
1 x U.S. Mark 5 nuclear gravity bomb supplied under Project E

1 x Red Beard nuclear gravity bomb
On 3 June 1982, Vulcan B.2 XM597 of No. 50 Squadron took part in the "Black Buck 6" mission against Argentinian radar installations at Stanley airfield in the Falkland Islands. Two of the four AGM-45 Shrike missiles were fired. On the return journey, while attempting to refuel from a Victor K Mark 2 tanker aircraft, the tip of the probe broke in the drogue. With insufficient fuel to return to Ascension Island, the Vulcan diverted to Galeão Air Force Base at Rio de Janiero in neutral Brazil. En route, secret papers were dumped along with the two remaining Shrike missiles, although one failed to launch. After a mayday call, the Vulcan was escorted by Brazilian Air Force Northrop F-5 fighters and was allowed to make an emergency landing at Rio; there was not enough fuel for a circuit of the airbase.[223] The Vulcan and her crew were detained until the end of hostilities nine days later.[224]
I must start of with a boo boo,the upper and lower fuselage halves are an extremly tight but perfect fit. So tight in fact that having dry fitted them together I was unable to seperate them, and trying to do so could end up with me damaging the kit :wall: .So if you plan to build this kit you may want to ream the female locating hole,s out a bit to lessen the tightness of the fit. Anyway some build shot,s
Image
The air intake,s have been fitted,( no seam,s on these , they are slide moulded) and the tailplane fitted, Just six part,s and you have this beauty ! The three part stand is ball mounted, so it can be posed in different : pose,s
Image
Some Perfect plastic putty was needed on the intake,s to wing joint, though nothing major.
Image
Same at the base of the tailplane but again merely superficial
Image
Image
Here is an example of the simplicity and wonderful fit of this kit, the engine fairing,s and bomb bay door,s have been removed from the sprue and just the sprue stub has been sanded smooth and-
Image
Here they are dropped into place not yet glued, superb engineering.
Image
Cockpit sprayed Matt black (Tamiya) and the pilot,s flying suit,s XF 22 and helmet,s Matt white. Other than that my Mr Magoo eye,s couldn,t see a great deal else ( they are minute)
Image
Wheel,s all made up,again the detail in this scale is excellent, nothing to fiddly but enough to take a wash and dry brush just to accentuate the detail that is there
Image
Image
Canopy added, a two piece and again after slight clean up the fit is superb. As you can see this kit really catche,s the beautiful line,s of this wonderful aircraft.
Image
Wheel,s dry fitted to check the fit and to ease painting later on, after I figure out some way of holding them while painting. I am fitting it wheel,s down but will alter it from display stand to airfield diorama when the mood take,s me.
Image
If I only have one gripe with this kit it,s the lack of detail to the bomb bay interior, but if the aftermarket boy,s go to work on it I may have to build another or three.
So next up I will mask the canopy fit the weapon,s and she is ready to prime hopefully at the weekend, cheer,s Dave.

So seeing as it,s been a couple of monty,s since my last one, best do an update on the build.
Having primed the model I made a start on the pre-shade with Tamiya XF 69 Nato black
Image
Image
Image
Image
While I had the black in the paint cup I also sprayed the undercarriage
Image
Image
Next I sprayed the under surface,s inTamiya XF 75 IJN Grey, The Tamiya Ocean grey seemed a little to dark to me
Image
Then the XF 75 was thinned and a drop of white added to achieve a faded look for the post shade
Image
I then masked up the wheel well,s and sprayed the interior of these Tamiya Flat white
Image
Image
Image
After a fairly long absense to start the Whirlybird sig I decided to resume work on the Vulcan,
The upper surfaces were sprayed Tamiya XF 83 Medium Sea Grey, unfortunately not only did lose the pre-shade I forgot to take a photo , so here it is at the start of the masking. I decided to use a method I have not used before, white tack rolled into worm,s to mark out the area,s to remain grey
Image
Image
Then masking tape to finish before applying Tamiya XF 81 Dark green 2[RAF}
Image
Image
Me being impatient as usual could not wait to remove the masking
Image
Image
So with the masking removed she is now ready for some post shading using lighter and darker shade,s of the grey and green upper colour,s
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
So that,s it for now, as I say post shading next, hopefully tomorrow so happy modelling, cheer,s Dave.

Camo looks cracking mate. Really nice work. A nice dark wash will bring back those panel lines on the top and bottom there.

OK, after a fairly long lay off got some more work done on the Vulcan
Image
Image
Image
Post shading finished and a couple of coat,s of Klear in readiness for the decal,s
Image
Undercarriage fitted along with the gear bay door,s
Image
Image
Couple of quick pose,s of the Vulcan on it,s stand
Image
Image
Image
Image
Decal,s on. If there is one let down on the kit it,s the decal,s, they are way to thick, even after three application,s of Micro set they still havn,t snuggled down. So next another two coat,s of Klear, a panel line wash and a matt coat to finish. Hopefully before the 14th, cheer,s Dave.
