Global Scale Modeller

Ok so post shed revolution I have to start something fresh in the new facilities. So I decided to break out a new tool trumpeter 1/72 Russian jet. Lovely little things that have excellent detail and are mini versions of the Hobby Boss 1/48 kits. Just a little more manageable. Finished model will be the size of a 1/48 prop.

The grey Chinese scheme I shall be recreating


First of all I need to put the cockpit together. As with the 4th Flankers the head rest on the seat is hollow so you have to fill the gap otherwise with such a large amount of glass in the canopy they look a little poor. So I used some plasticard and some sprue glue to fill it in. Will look fine when primed in black. I also put the joysticks in the cockpit tub


Then I have sanded down those annoying little old nipples that ate on the two fuselage halves. Same things appear on the larger models too. So black marker and sanding.



Then before I came in drilled some holes out and tried to add some ejector grab handles in lead wire to the ejector seats which I have forgotten to photograph derrggghhhh

Ok so primed some bits and bobs in Ultimate Black Primer. Used my spray area for the first time. Loving having a space to paint and another to model, really makes the whole experience a lot less stressful!


Also, built a few missiles



Hoping to get some paint down on the cockpit tomorrow if the wife falls asleep early!

Ok so tonight did a bit more
Firstly, I sprayed cockpit parts with Mr Colour 117 and the ejector seats with XF-69 both thinned with MLT and sprayed through my new Iwata HP-B plus. Gorgeous piece of kit I have bought for detail painting on 72nd kits.

Then I have cleaned up and constructed a load of ordnance! More missiles than Cuba in the 1950’s.

Looking forward to decalling the cockpit and painting the ejector seats when I next get in the shed!

Ok so tonight did a few of the cockpit decals. Nice decals as there is no raised details. But I think they look good for the scale. A wash will tone them down a little

So quick update painted the cockpit details with Vallejo model colour. Put a little wash on the seat and seatbelts. And did a little dry brush of Grey on the black of the seats. Few pigments where the feet would go and done.

Ok so some more work done tonight
I have installed the cockpit into the fuselage and added the instrument displays. Used Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black to paint as I think it shows the shape of the covers better. Masked the HUD with Maskol and I think for the scale it is looking ok.



Then with a little tamiya white and extra thin glue I have put the fuselage halves together and clamped them


Moving on quickly. This is why I moved back to 72nd from 48th the builds move at a quicker pace so I don't get bogged down. Really enjoying this, it is a lovely kit.

So last night I went to the pub and came home a little tipsy so decided that would be the best time to remove the seem one from the canopy. so with the help of a shape knife and several Ultimate sanding sticks followed by nous 2 and Tamiya Fine polishing compound i think they look alright! Also added the nose with 15g of weight to overt the tail sitter problem.

Spent the time while my wife and daughter were watching strictly to mask the canopy using strips of Tamiya tape.

Coming along really nice Dan, really tempted to pick myself something up at telford in 1/72, maybe an F-15 or similar.

So not been at the bench for a few days because of my son being ill and the weather.
Had another run at the Su-30 tonight and got a few bits done.
Did not like the way the canopy was stuck down with Micro Crystal clear so I removed it and the glue and re did with tet and f-lamps. Happier with that. But have not took any pics.
Then been working on those famous Flanker engines and intakes.
Not sure what it is called, but, sprayed the bit inside the intake with AK Extreme Metal Dark Aluminium and put some Citadel Nuln Oil over it to pick out the detail. Used an acrylic wash as did not want to upset the paint. Might aqua gloss tomorrow and add some oils. Or might not.

After that I just fitted the intakes and made sure they were a snug fit with a bit of sanding.


Might get to primer soon. Fingers crossed

So had a good run at her today over a couple of surprise sessions in the shed. Added a couple off fins and had to fill the gap will some Vallejo putty


Then put the engines together. I decided to spray the intakes Mr Colour 338 the plane colour because masking the metal painted internals would be a pain in this scale. So I will put sponge in the intakes when spraying the rest of the plane.



Then I have glued and clamped them in using Tamiya white and extra thin glue. Also, decided on the ordnance, going to fully load her!



Will leave overnight before doing anymore

So been working hard on the Flanker tonight to get her to primer at the next session. Might need a little sanding and filling but, not much.

So she has gone into primer. Primed her tonight with Ultimate Black Primer through the Apex. And she looks lovely!

So had a go at Black basing tonight. Used Mr Colour 338 thinned 50:50 with MLT with my new Iwata HP-B plus. Exposed some of the horrid seems I have left but, we live and learn.

OK finished painting the underside this evening and started masking off the engines ready for a hook focus concoction of AK Extreme metals and tamiya clears.Going to re prime in Ultimate Gloss Black primer first though.

So had a go at the engines tonight after spending an age masking them off.
First I used Ultimate Gloss Black Primer
Then I went crazy with various jet exhaust and burnt metal Extreme Metals. Added a bit of blue and purple metallic. Was too shiny so put some Tamiya X-19 smoke over it to tone it down. Looks good just did not do a great job masking so I have so overspray to sort out. You learn every time you do things. Never done jet engines like this before so will mask off a bit better next time. Nothing that can’t be fixed though. Decals next!

So tonight Matthew I fixed the overspray on the engines and painted the gun metal around the gun area.

Well the mistakes keep on coming this time I ripped one of the decals and got it all tangled. Think I have made a passable save but only just. Love decals, bring planes to life. Love sitting there and building them up!

Few more decals on tonight. Not a massive fan as they are a little glossy but, the confirm we’ll with suitable setting solutions.

Stencils Zzzzzzzzzz

So used Mr Colour paint to spray the undercarriage and other bits. Used Model Air tyre black brush painted on the wheels.

Nothing really to say about tonight’s progress other than I put some decals on a few missiles. And it was not that exciting.

So I channelled my inner Plasmo and went for it with the oil wash. First problem was to get the oil paint open. So put them in hot water and opened most of them!

Made a dark grey wash from, white, black and faded grey. Mixed it with AK oudourless thinners in a silver Plasmo dish. My professional modelling friend told it was a bit dark. But every day is a school day. Just sludges it. Will leave it overnight and will wipe off tomorrow.

Interesting...

So took the wash off today and I have over done it. My paint was not smooth enough and the wash has bitten in the rough bits. So, it’s a lot more dirty than I wanted. But, you live and you learn and it has not ruined it. Just not the plane I had in my head. However, I am doing an F-14 next and this kind of weathering would be perfect!






Added the undercarriage

A lot of progress yesterday. Decided to glue on the ordnance I had decalled. Will get the rest done ASAP, left it clean as I just want to get finished. Got the undercarriage doors to weather and the air brake to put on. Bit of supergluing during the week will sort that!
Sat it up on its legs. Looks ok. Just the step next to the nose on the seem looks a bit rubbish.

So gutted when I removed the canopy mask. Wash in through a gap and into the canopy claiming it perfectly. So mostly morning start up before they put the heaters on the windscreen Chinese Flanker done.
