For my second build
Yes you read that correct 2nd build........have you got back up ? Are you sitting comfortably again ? Good I shall continue

Now as it’s the 100 years of the raf and 100 years end of WW1 I really needed to build one of the royal air cor’s striking planes. Now I’m quiet sure there has more than 2 pusher planes (props facing backwards) during WW1 but the dh.2 and the fe.2b are the only kits I know of. Both built by wnw which are in the stash and yes this will be built but not right now. The dh2 is also made by roden in 1/32 which I used as a comparison kit for the wnw kit on you tube. Only the dh.2 is made in 1/48 by Eduard. It’s a few years old now and has been reboxed several times. Eduard did a line of striped down kits. Now these have photoetch wings that need to be made up.
So as I have put in the title my kit is the striped down wing version. What I’m planning to do is build the kit with the lower wings as complete doped items and the top wing the photoetch frames, as well as the tail.
This should be a bit easier and hopefully make the while build stronger. Well that’s the plan

Hope to get this fillips started over the weekend

Got the urge to get this started last night
Planning how I was going to tackle this has been in my head since I started this thread as I know with this sort of etch set up that it’s going to be very fragile.

So as I stated at the start the main body and the lower wings are going to be built using the plastic parts, this is too help give it some strength when building and future taking it too shows. Following the first build up pages it’s all about the cockpit. It calls for the wings to be chopped off which I ignored. All the smaller parts have been cut off and cleaned ready for some primer and paint colour. As usual knot got all the called out colours so I will be making do with colours that are close as in my racks. Image
A quick mock up next to the Fokker shows it’s only just a bit wider on the wing. These two planes are from different ends of WW1. The dh.2 was at the start fighting the Fokker2 monoplane where the Fokker 7 was near the end and would have been against planes like the se5Image

Now comes the part I was worried about, those photoetch wings. The top wing is made of 3 parts, centre spar and then the two outer wings. Feeling brave and I little over confident that this was going to be easy as, I started get it cut off the fret. As soon as I started I realised the etch Eduard has used is the thinnest they make etch in. This in turn made me start to think...ow no what have I got my self in for. Following the instructions for order of folds it started to become odvious that this was going to need a gentle touch. Every fold made the other side miss align so it felt like a continual chase to keep it square. I got to a happy point and then used the gator photoetch glue. That glue has saved me on this. Using CA would have been a night mare. A slight twist and the joins would have broken once built. Leaving it over night I held the piece this morning and it was surprisingly strong and happy to see fairly square. Hope the rest of the wings are just as forgivingImageImage

Cheer for looking

You really should try out the CA glue from VMS you will be very pleasantly surprized....it's really strong and not brittle. I''ll be buying more and there is a resin type as well.

Very brave Timbo, all that PE! Watch the undercart mate as it’s a poor join, I assembled mine early in the build though maybe get it together later on. The rudder/boom join is weak too...
Best of luck :th: :pop:

Wow! :jd:

Really looking forward to seeing this all come together Tim!

If you're still on the lookout for roundels I think I have some WW2 ones around here somewhere if they'd be any good to you? I'm not sure how much difference there was but let me know and I'll have a dig.

Thank you all, I’m looking forward to getting it built

Tim I watched yours being built and it really reminded me how fragile it is even when built

Digger much ablidged I will keep an eye out at Telford for that and try it out.

Done a little work last night. Was feeling stressed so thought best not tackle the larger wing sections, instead working on the tail that was just fold over and glue. Again using the gator glue. Once folded and glued it was weighted between my etch folder and a piece of very very useful marble.
I may try the wing tonight

I sent Chris a email and he said they won't be having a stand at Telford although some traders may have it.

Started getting the main wing folded and glued. I made the mistake of trying to do all folds then glue on the centre section
With the sings I chose to do each golf then glue. Hope this works out a much better way Image

Some lovely PE work going on here mate :th:

I'm deliberately avoiding PE on my D.V there's some in the kit but unlike yours and a lot other PE you just won't see it and I've had PE on a lot of my recent builds and I need a break from it.

Good day all.

Well it is with a sad heart I'm going to shelve this build.
This is most defiantly not a for ever shelving, this will be finished but right here right now...No
The reason behind this is...well...I leant on the wing during the show last night. It was only one end and not hard but trying to then readjust the parts they became unglued and then just started coming away from the minute areas they are connected with. The whole design and idea of how they join is just not the best and leaves a lot of the strength and structure to the glue. So the future plan will soldering it together, its the only real way to make it strong.

So thats it for now. If i get back on this before the finish then great but i will prob ask the mods to move this thread so i can come back to it at another time

Oh Man the PAIN ! and I was looking forward to the completion of this ...damn. Removing the glue and then soldering will be a problem in it self.

Well the one saving grace of only building one wing is i have a complete spare wing too build up. I don't have another centre section so that will be a tricky piece but i can use the other parts no problem. Thats why im not saying this will never happen but right now I will be leaving it to one side

Solder is defiantly the way to go with large and complex PE something I discovered building my unfinished project, the B17.

You need a quality soldering iron, and a mixture of solder paste and flux/solder, then just lots and lots of lovely practice :th:

I'm sure you'll be back on this one and some point :th:

Sorry to hear this, seems a number of builds are off the rails this weekend
Get some of Dan’s magic soldier paste and blast at it.
I use Ca glue to tack stuff in place when soldering. The Ca glue will just evaporate away when the heat gets it.

Really sorry to hear about the problems on this Tim - hope you figure out how to resurrect it because the work you'd done so far was simply awesome.
