Italian experts' help needed

Post by localjedi »

Hey guys!

As the subject line suggests, I'm looking for help from Italian modelers (or in other ways experts on the Italian language/culture/etc.) in this forum. I'm working on a vignette showing an Italian officer in front of a building in North Africa. Now I want to add some letters on the entrance that indicate, what kind of building it is. I want it to be something like a pub, bar, casino or similar. You know, a place where an officer would get drunk and sing.

So here's my actual question: What would such a place be called in Italian? I googled some ideas (e.g. osteria, taverna, casino) but I'm not sure if those are authentic and/or if they were common in Tunisia and Libya in the 1940s. Could anybody help me on this? I'd really appreciate your support.

Best regards
Pete

Neither Italian nor an expert ...
but the word Albergo might help. (Hotel) so Albergo di Tripoli etc
I think the officer classes might have done their evenings social events around the hotel bar.

Awesome! Your Google skills are obviously better than mine, or where did you get these results? Thanks!

Happy to help :th:
good luck with your project, nice to see one of the less used locations and time period.
I ended up reading about the Italian occupation
My Grandfather was captured by one of the German Auxillary Cruisers (disguised merchant vessels) and handed over to the Italians in Italian-controlled Mogadishu.

How about:

trat·to·ri·a
/ˌträdəˈrēə/Submit
noun
an Italian restaurant serving simple food.

Thanks guys! You really helped me a lot. I'm tending towards either caffè or trattoria at this point. I also have to see what looks better on the building. Thanks again and have a great evening!
