Hi

I guess like a lot of folks I started building plastic models as a school boy, then in later years discovered girls, drinking, work and drifted away from the hobby......

Over the years I then dabbled with the RC world but became a little stale. It was at this point I discovered the You Tube channel with the many builds and tutorials contained there in which has reignited my interest.

So I sit here typing this with a load of goodies on order (airbrush, compressor, tools) and a rearranging of my workshop for the new direction underway.

I suspect I will be on here with loads of newbie questions...here's a starter for 10....what's the best paints for spraying/brushing. I intend to start on modern jet aircraft.

Eh up lad,
Tamiya paints would be a go-to for starters .... easy to get into, buy them anywhere at a fair price, not too stinky if you dont have a spray booth yet.
M.R.P. would be next on the learning curve .... dearer, laquer based - need venting, may need practise but killer colours and killer finish.
brush painting depends what you paint ...... spot details on the model you can get away with what you have .... figure painting ... maybe vallejo with some flow aid / retarder and a wet pallet.
Next person to answer will no doubt give you opposite advise, and they wont even be wrong thats model forums for ya.

I have a good selection of Tamiya acrylics from my RC building (pilot painting.... ) so I was hoping for that response. One question...what do I thin them with? I have some Ultimate thinner on order.

Sound advice with the paints I'd also add Mr Hobby they do aqueous which is their equivalent of Tamiya water based acrylic. Or Mr Hobby Color that's a lacquer but smelly but the easy of use and finish is superb.

Hi'ya Ian and welcome!

Tamiya makes a thinner specifically for their acrylics: X-20A. I'm getting back into the hobby too and from everything I've seen it's always best to stick with the thinners made by the folks that manufacture the paints you're using.

X20-A is a good thinner for Tamiya (obviously) but I have got the best results form Mr Color Levelling Thinner - a bit smellier but it gives a fantastic finish
