Hi guys
So with my previous big tractor/trailer and load build comoleted i decided to start a new one
This time the Hobby Boss M1070 HET with M1000 semi trailer and the Meng M1A2 TUSK I/TUSK II /SEP Abrams tank as a load for the M1000
The plan is to build the M1A2 as a TUSK II wich is the heaviest version of the Abrams tank
This means the M1070/M1000 is the only tractor/trailer combination able to carry it as the weight of the uparmored tank exceeds the weightlimit of the older M911/M747 by several tons causing reliability problems
Besides that most of the M1070 builds i have seen are with the D9R arnored bulldozer and i wanted something different
Strangly i rarely see a M1 Abrams on these trucks eventhough they are the only ones able to move the newer and heavier versions of this tank around
So that is the plan ,as a side note i will be building this as part of a group build on modern armor of my modelling club wich last about 6 months so i think that is plenty of time to finish this
If not i will just enter the Abrams but i will be finishing it as a complete tractor/trailer/load build

So with the plan at the ready i started building
I started with the M1A2 TUSK II unlike the previous build where i started with M911 and M747

All the parts of the kit
Judging by the markings on the parts it is a base for several Abrams tanks as it offers the SEP/TUSK I and TUSK II in this kit
To build the SEP you need to skip all the TUSK I/II parts
But on the inside of the turret you can also see M1A1 markings to drill holes to fit parts for that version

But besides the kit i will be adding some after market parts

I will be using the ET models Duke IED antenna's set (contains 3 antenna's) and the Real models M1A2 stowage set

So that will be the starting point for this build
I actually started building about 2 weeks ago and at the moment i am working on the tracks wich is the last part of the Abrams for me
I skipped them earlier on in the build and completed the construction and the after market parts first

So that is all for now
I will be back soon to post the update about the construction of the Abrams
Once the Abrams is done i will be starting thr construction of the M1070/M1000 kit

For the point of being a enjoyable build that is
By the looks of it this will be a more elaborate build
The M1A2 TUSK II isn't a hard kit to build but it does look like a more complex vehicle to paint comparred to the D9R with all tbe small windows for the shields and the stowage
The M1070 is a more complex build then the M911 aswell
Way more parts and a pretty sophisticated trailer with 10 bogies with 4 wheels each
But i have seen other managing to build it so it can't be inpossible

I managed to finish the construction of the M1A2 yesterday and today i actually started M1070 HET
And because i don't want to fall behind with the updates this soon in the build i figured it was best to post the first update now

It is nice that they are working but it is a pretty fragile construction

At this point i took a small step away from the instructions and glued the upper and lower together
The instructions call for this at a later point but then there will be all kinds of fragile parts on the turret so i figured this was a better idea

I then added 3 resin antenna mounts with some brass wire as the actual antenna

It is a bit big indeed but comparred to the M911 i made recently it isn't that much bigger
Just a couple of cm longer i think
But it has a lot of wheels
I didn't look into the subject before i started so the 40 wheels for the trailer where a bit of a shock
Now the crazy pricetags on the resin after market wheels make sense though

So now that the M1A2 TUSK II is build and prepared for paint it is time to start the M1070 Tractor and M1000 semi trailer by Hobby Boss
A big kit and not the most common subject among armor builders
Allthough tank transporters rarely are kits that a lot of modellers own ,mostly due to their size and pricetag
But this one seems to be a pretty popular kit as have seen a lot of models online and on shows of this beast (it is 60x12 cm after all)
It is a fairly complex kit though so the pace has dropped compared to the Abrams wich was a nice build but also a pretty fast build

So as i am still working on the M1070 i thought it would be best to first show the kit while i am still building it
And i think that will take up quite a couple of hours to finish it

I am still working on the M1070 at the moment
At the moment i just started the cab construction but i think that i need to paint and weather the interior before i start to put it together
Unlike the M911 where i basicly build the entire thing before i even started to paint anything
But i still have some bits of the stowage set left ,even after using it on the M1132 Stryker that i am building aswell so i may end up using some bits of that aswell but that will be inside the cab mostly

So now the thread is back up to date i think

Because the Evergreen clear styrene is very thin i think masking will be inpossible without ripping the parts back out again so made a pair of drop in masks from a scrap piece of styrene sheet and some wire

It is a big kit indeed
The way i see it is that they choise detail over building ease
At times it can be a bit hard to put together with all the PE and wires
But that gives more detail

I guess i put in about 40 to 45 hours in to it so far
For the M1070 and M1000 that is
The Abrams was good for about 15 to 20 hours
So all in all about 60 hours of modelling so far
I have no idea how many hours the painting and weathering will take though

I started priming it this morning but i still have to get the paint for it
So it is put on hold for the time being
I have a couple more builds that i am working on ,all in the painting or weathering stage so i don't have to get bored any time soon
If i can i will be getting the paint soon
Just need to make a shopping list for all the colors i need for this build and some others

The Photo Etch stuff alone... is what is killing it for me... my poor eyes...

Usually depending on the situation, of course, I produce my own mix of paints, to try to get close to certain tones in the paint. Here in Brazil, we have online stores that sell the Ammo MIG, Tamiya and rarely Vallejo paints. Because of the current economy in our country, their prices are much higher than the prices practiced outside Brazil. The solution is to import.

Fantastic thread, wonderful build, and a really nicely detailed kit.

Watching this one with great interest....

In the Netherlands paints aren't that hard to get
And most of the times the price is not too bad either
I do mix some colors from time to time but in this case i need way more then what i can mix with the colors i have that can be used to mix the dessert tan i need
So it is easier just to buy a couple of bottles
I still have 1 more kit that needs the same color so i think i can buy 2 or 3 without having a lot left at the end

I still have the update for the M1000 to do but i put everything in a coat primer by now
I still have to get the paint though but i will do that in the upcoming week

This is a monster build. It is fantastic. Love the kit and you are doing a great job so far

One thing I find "odd" thou! They ask you not to glue stuff and a minute later; they ask you to glue some other part that basically LOCKS the previous free turning step you just did... ODD decision from HobbyBoss! but that's about the only hiccups I found .... stopped at Step 6 for painting... Keep up the good work!

Yeah they have some intresting methods in some places

Hi guys
Since i am working on the paint at the moment i think it is time for the building part of the M1000 semi trailer
Allthough the painting has grinded to a halt
At first i didn't get enough paint ,well i did but Vallejo changed the shade of their dessert tan from dessert tan to US dessert tan
They kept the number 71.122 but the FS number has changed just like the color
And i bought a bottle of each shade ,something i noticed when i was back home and not in the shop
Besides that i need new nozzles for the AB
They all are worn down and cracking so i only have 1 useable nozzle left and that isn't preforming perfect either
But i will get replacements and more paint later this week ,atleast that is the plan

I did this because it will be inpossible to add the wheels on the inside if the bogies are glued down af this point

Yep that is big
The total lenght is about 62 cm (or about 2 foot and 1 inch)
But it gives an idea of how this will look when all the parts are put together
It will look rather different when everything is painted, weathered and all the stowage is on there but it is just for the idea of the final look at this point
I also have a set of tensioners and chains for the Abrams but because the tank isn't on it's wheels and tracks yet i don't know how long the chains will have to be
So those will be build later on

I am working on the paint but like i mentionned at the start i am having some supply and technical problems (nice way of putting it )
But that should be fixed soon and then i can move on with the painting and other stages of the build

The bogies take up most of the time as far as the M1000 goes
The rest is all pretty straight forward stuff
Allthough the plumbing takes up a lot of time aswell

Yes it does but at the moment the build isn't going anywhere because some AB problems and i have through all the paint i had as i discribed in the update
That will be solved tomorrow though
As i am planning a trip to the only Airbrush shop we have in the Netherlands
Then i just need to reassemble all my airbrushes and work can continue
Wich is good as i wasn't planning on starting another build untill all the current stuff is done

using your picture... I have a question?

I tried to match my cabin floor onto the frame and found the locator pins at the floor were out of alignment...

I was wondering if you encountered the same issue? and instead of forcing it... I decided to enlarge the front holes "a little" to let the floor settle down... which it has! My idea was to have the hood attached to the firewall in order to help line up the fenders and get them glued level and squared with the hood! still working at it! nothing glued yet.

I don't remeber having problems with that area
The fit on the rear of the cab was my problem
I did notice the right fender tends to bend down so when i glue the hood on the chassis (i snapped the hinges) i will glue the fender to the hood as the left side is flush with hood
But i had to paint the radiator first
Once that is glued i will probably need to repaint the fender though
I am working on the detail painting so i will need to do several touch ups of the dessert tan anyway so i don't think that will be a big problem

Ah ! exactly the same prob here... My left fender is nice and straight and flush with the hood... as for the Right one ! same issue. (droopy) will level it up once the hood hinges are in place and glue in place ...

When i glued the hood on the truck i did notice the fenders wheren't symetrical but i could push the left one to the correct place
I don't know if that was a building error or that i just bumped it againdt something
It seems to be okay now

yeah... it took a little effort to line up ... and Tack in place... (Right Fender) I still think that HobbyBoss should have made the Hood and Fenders a one-piece unit since the model is a curbside! The tooling might have been much more expensive to produce so! I can live with a little last min. adjustment! Keep up the good work; That Trailer looks daunting!

But i would recommend to just cutting the hydraulic lines and attaching them to the bogies
And not yet to the trailer
I did that and during painting i found out that wasn't my best idea

I understand you want to keep the hydraulic lines as original as possible but! as vehicles get painted expediently for deployment ( if required? ) or touched up while in the field... Those lines usually get coated in paint to some degree! Road grime and dust and muck will make them appear sort of beige after some time. Normal weathering over the entire undercarriage would blend all that in nicely and having a few lines in pure black would indicate a newly replaced one here and there! keep up the good work !

That is a good point
I doubt they disassemble the entire thing before they start painting
I will going over them with some washes
But i still want to preserve the black color a bit
Just to make it look a bit less used
But i finished added the decals yesterday so today i will be starting the weathering
