Anyone with experience making clear casts?

Post by nyahoi »

Hi folks!

I'm looking into casting some pieces in a clear resin, and have a few questions for anyone with previous experience:

I was initially thinking of using a simple 1:1 clear cast epoxy, but a number of sources seem to say that all epoxy resins WILL yellow over time. Regardless of how much they may claim otherwise ('ArtResin' for example). Does anyone have any experience to the contrary with any particular brand?

If it is the case that that all epoxies are doomed to eventually turn brown, then I believe my only other option is a polyester resin. Apparently that never yellows, but I'm getting conflicting info on whether that can be glued to another surface with an epoxy resin. Again, if anyone has any experience with gluing polyester resin with an epoxy resin please let me know.

I'm looking at using an epoxy resin (such as Araldite) as with these cast pieces being clear, I don't want the unpainted surfaces they're glued to to be able to be seen through them. Obviously if I simply paint these surfaces before gluing, then I'm only gluing the parts to a thin and weak layer of paint!
So my thinking is to mix epoxy resin with enough black acrylic to remove its transparency (which apparently is fine to do), then use this substance to glue these cast parts onto the miniatures.

With this particular epoxy being coloured black, I'm thinking that yellowing wouldn't be an issue in this instance. On the rare chance that anyone might know otherwise though, please speak up!

Hopefully all of that made sense, and thanks for reading.
