Decals across shut lines?

Hi all. I'm doing the Tamiya (20024) Ferrari F189, which is only my second ever build. The model, like the real thing, features removable upper bodywork; two of the Ferrari badge decals (one on each flank) are supposed to sit across this shut line. Here's a quick reference pic:



My noob question is how best to achieve this. Should I cut the decal before applying and line up the separate sections. Or should I lie the whole decal across the join and then cut it with a scalpel when it is partially/fully set? All comments welcome. Cheers

I would apply the decal first across both parts, then cut with a scalpel. Apply some decal setting solution afterwards to tidy up the edges that you cut.

@Motoholic has just completed one, so he might be in a good position to advise.

If it were me, in this instance, I think I'd cut the decal in half before and line up the separate sections, I think the panel gap is relatively large on this kit. If it was a really tight panel gap then I would apply and cut with a scalpel, that's my take on it.

For me decal on first , a little de-tacked masking tape to keep top and bottom of bodywork together , decal on let dry then cut it with a new blade , then go over it with decal solution my choice is micro set and sol , job done.

With cutting the decal first the chances of getting a straight cut are slim.

Thats the way I would do it.

I cut mine first with a steel rule and new blade. Applied the lower half when building the sidepods. Glued the sidepods in place then sat the bodywork on top and applied the upper portion of the decal. Let it set/dry, removed the bodywork and clear coated. I did it this way as I was never certain how big the gap was going to be.
