Tamiya MS3 Red Paint?

Hi all

I'm looking to purchase the Tamiya Nissan R390 GT1 kit ( 24192 )
looking at the paint call out I see it call for Red MS 3 and as this kit has a red to black fade decal I really want to match this good.
Has anyone herd of the exact equivalent, or Has actually built this kit and has a good suggestion for the red

Hadnt heard of MS3, so looked it up, its a spray can .....
so, you dont want to decant ? or just need best match ?

Have decanted before but difficult getting the right ts colours sometimes in New Zealand let alone a colour I can't find that is still stocked. Is there a equivalent out there?

i believe its a colour from the mini racers range tamiya have and is moo longer made, you should be able to find an alternative.

It's also called out for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V WRC car as well. I built that back in the day when MS-5 was available (not available now I think) it didn't match the decals very well at all. I think your best option is to try a few different reds on some plastic spoons and compare to the red on the decals. You'll probably get a better match this way..

Hey kiwigav, this isn't really gonna help, but what Steve said is your best option.

I built this kit about 15 years ago and now have a body-less R390 sitting on the top of my R/C work bench... The paint didn't match really at all. I tried stripping and reshooting with a different red (that didn't match) and re-stripped the body. Long story shorter, I ended up chucking the body and just kept the chassis, was very frustrating. I never thought about the spoon thing back then. GLWI, and please post up the build - it's a cool car!

Funny you say that, I built the R390 and used that paint, from the can, and you are right - it didn't match the decals I had at all. I ended going back the my LHS and we stripped the body (dude that owned the shop was a friend and a hell'uva modeller) and used another can and it still didn't match. Frustrating.

You could take the decals to a paint mixing shop for cars and they may be able to match it to a swatch and mix some up for you. I always find it quite hard to match paint to a specific colour on a decal sheet. Like I said before, even when the maker provides a paint reference that is supposed to match the decal, it doesn't always match very well at all. My gut feeling is usually to paint everything and not use the decals at all, then you know it will all match. After looking at the model in question I do think you could airbrush the fade out on the bonnet/hood fairly easily..
