Slaters Mek-Pak?

Hi,

Getting back into the hobby after too many years away and I am wondering about glue...in the good old days I used the tubes of cement but I appreciate things have moved on. So before I start any kit, I purchased a bottle of Humbrol Liquid Poly as I figured that would be better than the old tubes.

However, I have since seen references to Mr Hobby S Cement which is very thin and so I was about to order some from a supplier and remembered that I was given a couple of half used small brown bottles of Slaters Mek-Pak.

Before I order anything (and before I glue anything!)...can anyone advise as to whether the Slaters is the same as Mr Hobby S cement? or give me any pro's or con's on the two.

Any advice appreciated.

I've not actually used it, but I gonna guess its the same as ambroid proweld, if so it is as thin as mr hobby and tamiya, but it does stink a lot more.

Plus I was forever knocking the tall bottle over ruining cutting mats

Yes it certainly does smell... Hopefully someone that has used both might say if it is any better or worse at gluing kits together than Mr Hobby S....from tentative attempts on old bits of plastic it seems to evaporate before I can get the brush from the bottle to the part and so far it seems dubious but I have never used such stuff before so I will see if anyone enlightens me...

Yeah that's just how the pro weld works, IMO you really can't beat tamiya extra thin, you sadly have to order it from the Far East, but it's well worth it.

Well...had a go this morning and seem to have got to grips with this Mek-Pak stuff today... I've been gluing bits of scrap sprue and spare plastic bits and bobs together and I was very pleased to find that it's cleaner and more efficient than the Humbrol Liquid Poly. Thanks for the heads up Paul on the availability of the Tamiya Extra Thin, much as I dislike distance purchases I will bear the Far East in mind.

Meanwhile I am getting an order together to Emodels and see that they supply the Mr Hobby S cement which also gets good reviews so I might add a bottle to my order in the meantime to compare with the Mek-Pak.

When I think that the last time I used any form of plastic glue was from a tube (possibly Airfix even !!)...this 'new fangled' stuff is a revelation to me...

The mr hobby glue is good, i just prefer tamiya extra thin myself, Keep going with the mek pak though as it does the same job.

Will do Paul and when my order arrives, I will compare MeK to Cement S and see the differences if any.

Well my order from Emodels arrived this morning and so I had a quick go with Mr Hobby S on some scrap sprue to compare with the Mek-Pak that I tried a few days ago.

There is not a great deal of difference to be honest but if I had to choose, the Mr Hobby S seemed more user friendly in that it evaporates slightly slower than Mek-Pak and with the built in brush it is more convenient plus the bottle is more stable. Setting time seems very similar and any unintentional spills on the surface alongside a joint vanishes in seconds with no real damage that would cause any concerns.

So if I had to choose then it would be Mr Hobby S.....well done to Emodels.co.uk also for their prompt delivery!

One day Paul...I will take a shot and order a jar of the fabled 'Tamiya Extra Thin' from the far East...it seems painless enough just takes a bit longer to get here but looking around today on 'EBray'... the prices including postage are quite reasonable considering the distance.

I`m using Revell`s Contacts Professional .... ( i think i am the only one here ) i love the needle point it gives you just that extra bit of pinpoint accuracy

It's well worth it, I think it just edges the lead from mr hobby, there's not much in it though, but I still prefer tamiya

If you do get it just get a few bottles of it
