Tamiya Nissan R-34 GT-R Z Tune

Hello Folks
I am building my first model in since I was a teenager and as I am 64…….
I have the Tamiya Nissan R-34 Gt-R Z tune and I was lucky enough to stumble upon Paul’s build of this car so I will look at what he has done to make sure I do not go to far off the rails. LOL

I have another thread going on my failed paint and primer so I will not bore you with that here hence to say my 1st looked like a highland plaid … ugh!

I am on my fifth sand and third priming attempt of the body. I am not going to use the airbrush but the Tamiya rattle can as the temps will hit 60 here today. (I paint in the garage) I am going to back out my Camaro SS turn on my big extraction system and give the body a go. Wish me luck!

The chassis is done and painted in X-18 semi gloss black. Wheels are primed and ready to go. Mirrors and spoiler are primed and ready

My plan is to paint the body with Tamiya X-13 when the primer sets.

Good day to all you Folks! Well I have had some good luck and bad But mostly good!! I painted my car body with Tamiya Metallic Blue ~ 4 lite coats like Paul's video recommended. I then wet sanded the body, but got a little over zealous on the hood and took the paint off on a few edges so after finishing sanding the entire body I re-painted the body 5 coats and this time Lightly sanded the body and success!!

I finished sanding and prepping all the body, mirrors and spoilers on Thursday. But there is no Clear X-22 to be had around here. Even mail order the wait is 3-4 weeks . Not brave enough to try the P2K yet as my extractor just took a dump so I am painting in my garage with no hood. I did just order a bench vent from Strike Hobbies and some Ultimate Products so I am waiting on these.

Yesterday I removed all the running gear parts from the sprue and cleaned all the leftover debris, drilled holes for mounting and primed. I now have them all primed and ready for some paint. I have to figure another holding system today as sideways on toothpicks in a box is not working LOL. HAGD folks.

Thank you Andy! Just started building the running gear now. Not happy with some of the colors choices I have. I now see why folks have lots of colors lol. Maybe a trip to the store will help but I suspect not as selections are limited. HAGD &Week

Good Day to all. I had time to assemble the running gear over the last few days. It is all painted and assembled as of late last night. I got lazy and took the shots with my iPhone XR and desk lamp so the "spots" you see are actually the led's of my desk lamp. I use an Omano magnifier with 35 LED's hence the dots you are seeing in the paint. I should have used my softbox & D850. I will not be lazy again. Before the build is done I will have better shots. The exhaust is that X-11 & X-12 1:1 mix Tamiya calls for. Not a big fan of the color, but I do not have any metal paints and the LHS does not have any at all. The arrival date was 2 weeks So Looks like I need to invest in some metal paints. From what I have seen AK Extreme look like a good shot

yes there is a line on the muffler. I got my fat fingers on the paint before it was dry and had to repaint. I did not see this line in the silver after the second painting . For my 1st build in over 30 years I think I will live with this. I need to work with some thinned paint next time and not straight out of the bottle. On the this gold mix it is a good color for the cat's and resonators. At least all the one's I have crawled under were a goldfish color to bronze but the pipes...... Ducksguy did a much better job as did Paul!

Well I had some time free so I was able to prime the interior parts, paint the parts then tape the sections. Now that was a chore taping those tiny areas. Yes to a full scale car I got past my limitations and got the interior done. I just finished what I started Friday.... Yard work you the nice weather .... Plus I did fix that line on the muffler, cannot have a half done job staring me in the face so I got out the 12,000 and removed the mess. Looks much better. Just finished gluing up the interior and took a couple of shot with the D850 and the desk lamp.

I will start the masks on the windows in the next day or so depending on my schedule then I am stuck waiting on X-22. No one around here has it. I had to order some as everyone is backordered..... Must be "Murphy Law". BTW the M stands for Murphy ROTFL, got to have some fun with it,

After rewatching Paul's video on Clear coat I really do not want to use P2K which is a Urethane as I spray in my garage which contains a gas fired hot water heater

I can offer an update: I did not take pictures as I will save them till I buff the body. The Postal service delivered a package of 3 bottles of X-22 to me Friday evening so I used some tack cloth on the body, wing and mirrors. Saturday morning and shot some thinned X-22 on the body. I did 5 thin coats. Now to let the body sit for 7 days to cure then I can polish to a nice shine. Yes I know not as good as P2K but my garage (where I airbrush) has a gas fired hot water heater in it. Mix that and Urethane and we could have a boom
I have also masked off the windows and shot the black on the window, wipers, and other bits. Those are ready. Painted and assembled the lights & R View mirror. I am basically on hold till the body cures and I can buff.

Well I finally got the body shot with clear, buffed out. I used the Chemical Guys compounds that I have and the results were great. I waxed the body with Butter Wet Wax.

I followed @Pauls instructions and painted the window then the trim. Some of the trim I hand painted. But I am done and all the stickers are on the body.


Overall I am pleased with my 1st build in many many years. Learned some lessons that I will not do again Like touching the body with a touch of glue on your hands But if you learn and move on that is what life is about. It's my hobby, I enjoyed myself and I will build another! HAGD Folks and thanks for looking

Looks good to me and well done. Its a learning curve for all of us every model brings new challenges and finding a way forward to do the best you can with what you have. All part of the challenge of model kit building.

Nicely done! Awesome color choice as well. I'm still learning to build cars and had a question for you. Do you paint everything first before assembly? I have this kit tucked away until I feel my skills are a tad better before attempting.

BRaYme. Yes I did. I painted the body, then the chassis before I assembled the car. This was my 1st build. I followed along with Paul's build of the car.
He did a Video build of the R-34 and I watched that one and his Video Tutorials
