Hi guys
So with my first entry being finish way faster then i expected i decided to start building a second entry
This time it will be Dragon's sd.kfz.164 Nashorn premium edition (kit number 6314)

The kit content
The instructions are the quite bad kind with photographs instead of drawings so it is easy to miss some parts if you pay a bit less attention
But it does come with a long lost memory , the dragon card with the goodies
To be fair this kit has quite a lot of goodies like a large decal sheet , metal barrel (front section of the barrel) and a pretty large PE fret

But i bought this kit second hand (pretty cheap too) and the previous owner allready had some after market in the box

Wich was this little lot
The funny part was that i wasn't the first to take a look at the kit
The kid that looked at it first said it was too expensive because the kit without the goodies was cheaper brand new
The seller asked half the RRP for the kit and didn't even mention the goodies
The goodies alone cost more then what i paid in total
So it does pay off when you have a bit of knowledge of kit prices

This is the camoscheme i want to do for it
I don't really like the kit options and i have plenty of decals to make it look like the vehicle in the picture


Anyway just a vehicle would be a bit boring
So i will be adding some figures

But it is one figure short as the Nashorn has a 5 man crew and not 4

But the guy on the left in this kit looks like a officer
So he will become the vehicles commander
The other guys will also be build and they will become some infantry troops passing by and asking directions

To make the group of troops look a bit bigger i will also add these 4 figures

The plan is to make a small diorama or vignette with vehicle's crew loading new ammo while the infantry is passing by
The figures all have autumn/winter uniforms so that gives some options
I don't want to do a winter scene so it will become a autumn scene with various camoschemes ,some foliage on the vehicle and maybe some vegitation in the back of the scene

I also have these to dress it all up a bit

The ammo tubes and crates are for large type of 88mm rounds and come from a Verlinden kit
The ammo in the middle is probably from Tamiya and most are brass rounds

So that is all i can think of at the moment
But it should make for a nice little scene
Atleast i think it should
I am building the kit at the moment and will use some old models to scavenge some parts like stowage and Friultracks for this one
Also some more research is needed to see what kind of field mods where done on these vehicles like add on armor in the form of spare tracks welded on the vehicle and stuff like that
Once i have made enough progres i will post the first build update

But it isn't as ambitious as it seems
Sure the camoschemes will take a while but i have a book showing how to paint those
The vehicle itself isn't overly complicated except for the gun and the ammo storage (by the looks of it ,i haven't started those yet)
And i have 2 donor vehicles for the tracks so i only need to clean and repaint those as they are Friuls and allready build and the right lenght
So that is a time saver

Interesting...I have the this one in my stash as well. Haven't been game to attack it yet. Also have some PE sets I could use so very interested in how it all goes together. One Pe set there I don't recognize.

And the PE on this one is really slowing me down
Most of it is going quite fast but the ammo storage is a hand full to clean up and bend

I had a couple of extra days off
That makes for some extra bench time
And i am trying to get a good start as work will be getting much busier soon so i get a lot less bench time
Allthough i am told i can be quite fast when i put kits together

I think it is time for a build update
It is getting close to being ready for paint but i still have some work to do at this point
Mostly a bit more detailing with PE and some wire
After that the wheels and some stowage
I have found my 2 old Hornisse (early production Nashorn) models and both have Friul tracks on them so i can salvage those for this model
Saves time aswell as i don't have to build tracks and they are the right leght aswell (not to mention the €30 i save for not buying new ones)
As for the stowage that will probably will be some personal gear ,a bucket i made for the Jagdpanther but couldn't place anywhere ,a open or empty ammo tin for the MG (i have a set of Aber PE ammo tins) ,the actuall MG wich will be a MG42 with a ammo belt hanging out and a camo net or tarp

But that is all future talk

I removed the molded on bracket and replaced it with PE
There is also a bracket on the armored block at the front of the exhaust wich is the same shape as the connecting edges this vehicle has all over the place

Thr gun was then placed in it's cradle
Later on i will remove the pin on the bottom just so i can paint the gun seperate and still get it back in the vehicle

These are used to hold wire or rope where the crew can place treebraches or other camouflage materials
The rest of those eyelets will go on the hull sides and rear

I did very little in terms of modifications here
But i added a backrest on the seat and i drilled out the sights as this was a solid piece
In real life the lense is placed a bit back in the sight and not on the outher edge of the thing

I removed the 2 brackets that hold the upper and lower rear plates and replaced them with the PE from the kit

I wanted both of them opened up but you only get enough PE for one side

Now that all the armorplating is placed i did a test fit of the gun
At this point i removed the pin on the bottom of the gun
Because i will have the gun in the transport lock it doesn't matter that i removed that pin because i can still line the gun up with the hull

With the exception of the eyelets and doors the rear is finished
The doors will be painted as seperate parts
They will be opened up later and i want to be able to paint the camo on the outside and reach the armorplating for weathering and adding details

A birdseye view of the front of the vehicle
This gives a pretty good view of the PE parts
But it still needs a bit more work
The long tube that runs across the hull is for a cable that connects to a lever in the fighting compartment
This is there to release the gun for the travel lock
I want to add some thin leadwire to these pieces to have a actual wire there and the 3 brackets on the hull are for a towcable
I will need to go through the spares box to see if i have the right size ends for a cable
If so i will add that to the brackets using some copper towcables i have (the steel ones Dragon usually provides are way to stiff for the PE brackets and it would snap them off ,if they where even in the kit)

And that is all i have for now
Next time the build will be ready for paint
As it doesn't require a whole lot of work at this point
And the figures will be build aswell

Excellent work! As Stokesy said, the PE detail is great - really adds a lot of interest to it.

I can only echo what the other guys already said - the level of detail crammed in there is really eye-catching.

All in all it goes together quite well
Except for the angled front plates of the fighting compartment
I had to remove the locating pins to get them to fit at all
And then do some filling and sanding to get them to look right
That was a issue with the older Hornisse kits aswell and this is based on that kit
So i did expect it this time
From what i have heared the Tamiya kit is a nice build though ,esspecially OOB

The PE does add a lot to the detail
But also to the amount of work
The ammo storage really took me a lot of time to build
And at the end i discoverd it was only enough to build one of them open
You can't even build both of them open if you use the styrene parts as again they only give you enough for one side

It should become quite crammed with detail all over
Well in the end anyway
At the moment i am working on adding the last bits to the exterior
Then i only have the wheels left to do and the tracks
But that is a quite fast and easy thing as i can just nick them of a old model
And the figures ofcourse ,those will take a while though as there are 12 of them
But i think most can be done by tonight

We struggled for years and the best we came up with was the 17 pounder which was still a bit behind the standard 88 to say nothing of this gun, the later version in the Tiger 2 and the 75 in the panther, which could penetrate even thicker armour than the 88!

The brit's had a similiar sized gun in the 3.7inch AA. This is what wiki says

Like other British guns, the 3.7 had a secondary anti-tank role. This meant that, if the gun position came under tank attack, it would engage the tanks. However, during the campaign in North Africa, the shortage of capable anti-tank guns led to some agitation to use the 3.7 in a primary anti-tank role, i.e. deployed specifically for anti-tank defence.

Guns had their sighting arrangements improved to enable better anti-tank shooting. However, the 3.7 was used in the anti-tank role only in one or two emergencies. The arrival of the smaller 76 mm (3-inch) calibre 17-pdr anti-tank gun in late 1942 made a primary anti-tank role irrelevant for the 3.7 but if, unusually, they were deployed in a forward area then they could have a secondary anti-tank role.

The 3.7 was inherently unsuitable as an anti-tank gun. It was big and heavy, two tons heavier than the German 88, making it tactically unsuitable for use in forward areas. Additionally, HAA regiments equipped with the 3.7 were relatively few in number in the field army and controlled by corps or army HQ, or at even higher level HQs, and command of them was not often devolved to the commanders at divisional level where the anti-tank role might be required. Prolonged firing at low elevations (not part of the original specification) also strained the mounting and recuperating gear.

The guns were used in the field artillery role quite extensively in the second half of the war in Italy, north-west Europe, Burma and the south-west Pacific. Batteries were issued with the necessary fire control equipment. Counter-battery or counter-mortar fire was the usual role. However, their HE ammunition seems to have always been fuzed for airburst; this means maximum ranges were limited to 9,200 yards (8,400 m) with the No. 199 fuze and 16,200 yards (14,800 m) with the No. 208 fuze.

Basically the carriage and mountings design wasn't good enough.

I'm not sure about the British but the US figured the 76 was good enough
If the AP didn't do the trick they had HVAP
They just didn't bring it to Normandy
Besides that they had a rule that the commanders in the field should request a bigger gun before they would start production on it

The story of moving a bunch of Pershings was pretty funny
Taking 40+ days to move them within a state because they couldn't find the right railcarts
But overall the Pershing had some problems
Mostly because of the weight
I guess they didn't learn much from the Germans
As they made tanks that are so heavy a lot of bridges couldn't even hold them

That was indeed possible
There was a problem for the engineers as their bridges at first couldn't carry them as those had a 30 ton limit
The Sherman wich formed the bulk of the tanks was only 23 to 25 tons

I hope it shows in the picture but i damaged the roadwheels ,adding small nicks and worn edges to make them look a bit older

The various bits of stowage
The logs will go on the hull just above the suspension bogies
This is a feature i saw in some old photographs of Panzer IV based vehicles where the crew added logs cut in half to sides as a form of additional protection
I only need to make some brackets for them but that is pretty easy to do with a bit of leadfoil
It is a field modification after all so it doesn't have to look like it is factory quality work

As a small side note ,i found a radio that can fit the bracket on the right hand side ammo storage
So that will be added aswell along with some headphones

So the next bit will be for the figures
But like i mentionned at the start i am still building them
At this point i won't be adding all their gear yet as that makes painting the various camouflage schemes a whole lot easier
But that is something for the next update

That overhead shot of the fighting compartment shows how stunning it will look with all that detail. Love the obligatory bucket on the rear wall too - great touch.

The bucket actually was put together for Jagdpanther
But i had nowhere left to put it on there or i would have to hook it on one of the U shaped pieces that would hold towcables when in use
But it would be very close to the tracks if i did that
So i thought one of the many brackets on the Nashorn would be a good spot instead

I think as far as the Nashorn goes i added quite a bit
There still will be some more as i will be adding branches for camouflage later on
And there will be some small pieces for the vignette aswell
I think a couple of jerrycans and ammo boxes/crates for the big 8.8 cm shells i have a couple of open crates aswell so that would be a nice touch i think
The vignette itself will be rather basic
Just a dirt road with a small fence and a tree or some bushes in the background

But i am working on the figures and the various stowage and vignette items at the moment
So i hope i can post the next update soon

I think this should make it a fun scene to build

So that was the big change in plans
In the end i think the buildings will be a nicer backdrop to the vehicle and troops then just a couple of bushes or a tree
And i had these laying around for several years after i used them for a diorama
Back in the day when i had no clue of what i was doing
These days i have A clue all be it a small one

Anyway that is all i have for now
All the parts for this build and the Jagdpanther (my other entry) are primed by now and i can basicly start painting everything
So i hope to have enough progres soon to post an update about that

That's looking good Mark

I think with the Nashorn itself being such a large vehicle the taller buildings for the backdrop offset it nicely and give a proper sense of scale.

That's a lot of figures & wheels to paint up though!

There are 12 figures for this build
Not a crazy amount but plenty to keep me busy i think
Allthough the build is becoming much bigger then i first planned
As for the cat , i think it came with a set of Tamiya figures or animal set

Hi guys
I think it is time for a little update mostly just like my Jagdpanther build
Just to let you know i am not out of the SIG but more that i have been busy but still made a wee bit of progres
Eventhpugh it is nowhere near the amount of progres that i would like it to be

But if it should be that i am running out of time (just planning ahead) i will finish the vehicle before the SIG ends and continue on with the diorama later on as a last resort kind of thing

Anyway

The camoscheme is painted with mr hobby color aqueous H403 dark yellow mixed with a bit of H85 sail color (similar to Tamiya buff ,just a bit darker)
The green is Tamiya dark green (XF-61 i think it is) mixed with some Buff
The scheme is taken from a AK book of profiles
Allthough i had only 1 picture of the scheme i filled in the rest
Just because i didn't like the scheme's from the kit instructions

And ofcourse the buisness part of the Nashorn

After that i started the detailpainting but i didn't get to the point that i started to take pictures of everything
I will once i actually start with drybrushing and adding additional colors to the parts
Because i want to show how i do certain things step by step
Just in case domeone finds it usefull and besides that i am changing some of my methods and color choises
So the goal is to make it a bit more in depth sort of speak

Anyway ,that is all for now
I am planning to get aome decent bench time in the following days so i hooe to be back with some progres soon

I thinj i will get the vehicles done in time but all the figures will be a task i think
All in all i have about 25 figures for 2 builds
The ones for the Jagdpanther build will mostly have a simple Wehrmacht uniform so that is pretty easy
But the figures for the Nashorn will get camo suits
I hope to get started on the figures soon
The Jagdpanther is about 50% detailpainted and needs some chipping at this point
The Nashorn is almost ready for decals ,chipping is done and almost all the loose gear like ammo cans and tubes ,boxes and so on are painted
I think i only have some ammo and rust to paint on that one

The buildings have been in the box of doom for a long time
I think i even used enamels to paint the wood as i couldn't get that paint of the buildings when i was cleaning them
But for a couple of old Verlinden buildings they are pretty good

Your model is really coming along,Mark. Love the buildings and the “box of doom” . That gave me a good laugh.
