I am supposed to be far out in space with the sig, but here I am stuck to the ground addicted to a F1 car
Now not any F1 car, this is a 1997 Constructor's Champion and Driver Champion who just happens to be a Canadian...Jacques Villeneuve
Quite a story to that season, get to that later.
It is a beautiful car and the last to run a Renault engine and the last big success for Williams.
This is a FB group build on another site. I like the sequential posts of our forum so I will post more of the build here.



The kit.
Revell, ahem yes revell, 1/24 scale
This is not even JV’s car by the front wing colours.


It is piss poor on detail with soft plastic and soft blobs of detail areas
The decals are nice, but have all wrinkled up on the paper and look to imminently explode when they touch water
I have purchased Rothman decals from Indycals in the proper 1/24 scale but for the FW16 unfortunately only available ...meh the colours are not vibrant again. Not so impressed with this company honestly.
I will have to paint the livery and pray I can attach the decals over it




So this build has an opportunity for me to have it blow up in my face and fail miserably.
As Mike Tyson says "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face"

A smart man would tuck into the body work and test out those decals
I am not that smart man, I did the rear clip and tested the wheel decals. You can see a tear on every yellow OZ decal


Amazingly Revell put the sprue attachment points in the middle of the wheel instead of right on the outer rim....amazingly. So I could paint them on the tree.




Then I messed with the engine area...hard to find a really good detail reference photo of this

Ok so hold on now cause we are about to go for a loop
I am getting the notion to spray the body and I see I cannot get seams closed as it needs the front arms attached and the cockpit installed
Hmmm The engine area will be completely covered over and nothing show...basically a curb side

SO I did what any normal person would do....I cut off the engine cowling and attached four 1mm rare earth metal magnets to clip it back on
Actually a normal person would have made it curb side

Oh this should be good, looking forward to following along Scott

Some warm water and decal set should sort the decals, just be careful

So now we have:
*Shaky decals
*Minimal reference photos for adding detail
*Cowling cut off and seams to tighten up
*Huge potential for just one decal to fail and ruin everything
*No brains or common sense in my head
What in the hell am i doing??

Last night I started to measure out the heat protection layer for the engine bay floor
Using foil gum wrappers...they can be spray painted fyi

I was a bit worried to show this as a build thread, but people like carnage too so what the heck

Opened up the snorkel and messed with the body panels a bit.
The magnets are great as a stable repeatable position for aligning things



Nice colour schematic I found of the car
I ordered a set of 1/24 carbon fibre decal today. Was looking for an extra set of kit decals, but nope



Also found Studio 27 made a 1/20 version of this car. It is about $300. Have to think about that one

Just caught up with this one - nice work with the magnets and hoping you get the decals sorted out as it's one of those iconic schemes and the last World Championship for Williams to date (and sadly they don't look like getting back up there anytime soon ).

Are you all set for reference photos now? I'm happy to have a trawl through my F1 books to see if I've got anything in there if it'd help?

If you have a shot of the rear clip...engine and transmission from above that would be great
I have yet to see a clear shot from that angle
I think they kept this car pretty secret as the cowlings seem to stay on in all photos I can find

Ok I'll take a look this evening and see what I've got. I've got a niggling thought that I've got HHF's FW19 from the same year in die-cast up in the attic too, I don't know how much detail that'll have (or even if the covers come off) but if I get chance I'll see if I can dig it out this weekend.

I guess you've seen this one?

Doing some engine detail while I wait for the 1/24 carbon fibre decal that is holding me up a bit.

I added some 0.4mm metal rivets into the cylinder head

It's all moving along very nicely Scott

Sorry Scott - no joy with photos of the back-end so far. It didn't help that a couple of the books were printed before the 1997 season #feelingbloodyold

I'll keep my eye out for you though.

I spent some time in the hangout working on the engine bay details.
After a few hours of debriefing and mental therapy this is what I got done...

Valve cover details and wires


Water pipe return and sensor


Then I worked on an air box to the radiator in the LHS


I may park this a while whilst I wait for my carbon fibre to show up
I should get the space build going, but this F1 build is under my skin. Been reading and watching many videos, falling down the rabbit hole of the Internet.
Realizing M Schumacher was a bit of a COMPLETE jerk

Very nice work! The engine is looking particularly tasty and a good idea about the magnets.
I do remember that bit of argy bargy between Villeneuve and Schumacher back in the day
And thinking Jacques was a bit more of a gentleman racer than old schumy. Front seat for this build.

Having a lot of fun with this build though difficult as references are spotty
Last night I read a bit on an auto detailer who went to a mansion in England for a job and the car collection had both of the Williams F1’s from 1996! Rabbit hole kind of stuff, time waster
As per schumy, there is an old saying “never meet your heroes as they are sure to disappoint you”...a number of men who drove F1 cars definitely fall into that category for me

A gentleman in Australia..do they have gentlemen there???...posted on FB that my water hoses were wrong.
I turned them around so they dive down toward the radiator now
The dude was a Williams mechanic in the past so I felt it wise to listen

Sunday’s worth of modelling:
Decanted the Tamiya gold spray
Sprayed Ultimate white prime, Tamiya LP white and tested the rear wing decals...verdict is lovely, but fragile!!

Calling no joy on the help...”no pictures and it’s 22 years ago”

I found the exact garage pics I wanted but of a FW18 .....that is as close as I am gonna get

Ya not bad hey for photos.
The Revell kit is crap and I would have splurged for the Studio 27 1/20 version had I know it existed.
The photos are of the season's before car...Damon Hill's FW18 that won a championship and Jacques Villeneuve was his race partner
SO there might be subtle differences to the FW19 the next year, but an absolute mother load of detail shown
I was bugging the Williams tech that they must have dropped their camera early in '97 and couldn't afford to buy another one
He didn't reply after that

We shall see.
There are clearly some issues with kit arrangements from Revell
I wont get every nut and bolt, but I can get some larger part and wirings represented now
I am so stoked...and of course found those photos late Sunday night right before a work week so have to wait a bit to get at it

Got some flooring done tonight after dinner and chores
Added the heat insulation to the rear area. Gum wrappers cut to shape and white glue





Also Painted the gloss black on the rear wing parts that will receive the carbon fibre decal, when it gets here, eventually
Those bits are tucked way so I no touchy!

Great work on the extra detailing and awesome photos too.

Ok , ya, ummm so I am supposed to be building an x wing. But that is boring compared to this cool car so she is back out of her box and on full swing. I will switch to x wing when it hits me...probably at the painting step for this

So three big things done on the Williams on Saturday
First the Cockpit:
I used painted napkin and painted foil gum wrapper to make the tan sides and seatbelts respectively. All white PVA glued down.
Some carbon fibre accents added as well. I also re-did the steering wheel attachment in aluminum with a telescoping brass pin so the wheel can turn and come on and off.

Second was Tire valves:

Using my little box of tubes...


I addd a valve stem in each wheel.


Tap and die set used to thread the brass for a base and then a smaller brass pin goes through for the valve. A bit over size, but it was the smallest brass I had.

All looking good and nice work

Third job The Rear Wing:

These things are a pain in the azz on F1 models...floppy, poorly indexed for assembly and delicate in position

The Williams has tricky CF and Rothmans split decals...they came out ok.
The Studio 27 1/24 scale carbon fibre was a joy to work with....lovely stuff indeed




The attachment point of the wing to the rear end was a pathetic useless nub from Revell
So I threaded some brass tube, tapped in some matching threads into the rear plastic and Ca glued in the tube.
To the wing’s base, I cut off the kit tab and drilled a hole for a brass pin.
Now the pin slides into the tube and they fit together precisely and can be adjusted or even removed





So here she sits for the night
