Folks. As I am fairly new I need some advice before I put my foot in it again
I want to paint my exhaust with the AK Extreme paint. this is enamel paint and I have not used enamel in 35 years. I do not remember the rules. I normally prime with Tamiya Laquor primer and either Tamiya or Mr Hobby color thinner. Am I going to shoot myself in the foot doing this with the enamel paint? Last time I mixed types was Vallejo primer and Splash Laquor paint.... not pretty. Looked like Scottish plaid
Anyone want to share enamel rules?

AK do three of there own primers for Extream Metal Paints [Link below] and these will be fine to use but you could also use full size car primer as an alternative available from your local car mart we have a shop called Halfords in the UK that suplies car paint.

Hey Jmurphy,

I have worked with these paints extensively on my f1 and gundam builds and as far as primers
Go the tamiya ts-14 gloss black is a great primer especially if you want a high gloss polished look finish on true metal or alclad does a black primer that works just as well. You can use tamiyas
Fine grey primer if you want a duller look but as always, grab a cast off bit of sprue and do
Some test shots. I made up a colour chart with diff primers to see what finish I got from gloss
To flat in each metal colour so I know what to expect.

If Tamiya and Mr Hobby are you primer/paints of choice, then you'll be fine with AK Extreme Metals. Both Tamiya and Mr Hobby are "synthetic" acrylics and as such, they behave more like lacquer paint (hence why a lot of people use lacquer thinners with them). If you're worried though, try a test piece first to put your mind at rest, or alternatively, put a gloss coat down before spraying the extreme metals.

you dont need to prime for AK xtreme metal (doesn't need thinning either) - it goes down perfectly without any primer at all - and is also fine over tamiya paint and other primers - but on bare plastic its perfect.
