best masking tape.

Had an absolute 'mare painting the beriev last night. I did the undersides a light blue earlyer in the week, masked it and sprayed the upper surfaces last night.

It has leaked under the masking onto the lovley light blue. I know I thinned a little too much but maybe also the tape isnd adhering enough.

What are peoples favourate masking tapes?

Tamiyas tapes in various widths for general masking, jammy dog for micro lines and frog tape for larger areas, the frog is basically the same tape as tamiya, but on a much larger roll and a lot cheaper.

You can see how well the jammy dog tape works on the p40 nose between the grey and green

Most people seem to favour tamyia tape. I have been using revell becayse thats all the local place had. Some vallejo air light blue and tamiya tape shall be ordered and picked up from eModels on my way home next week methinks.

Yes, the splice cut into the roll, so every2 inch or so there was a piece missing. but it was all they and then I had.

I was, until recently, one of the un-educated fools that thought tape was tape and I had mixed results with Sellotape, Scotch Magic tape and cheap generic decorating masking tape. Then, on a whim, I bought some Tamiya tape, just to see what all the hype was about and... well it does everything I want it to and lives up to all the hype!

I won't tell you stories of peoples using Electrical tape cuz they are poor... which in today's Economy I understand! but since the results are so Destructive !

Plz don't use Black Electrical Tape on your precious models...

I've used regular painter's masking tape from my local Glue Products and have never had a problem. I guess I just got used to it. I bought a roll of frog tape to make things easier so I won't have to put so much effort in getting perfect masking jobs with regular tape when I could save myself time and energy.

I highly recommend checking out your local Walmart in the paint section for some frog tape. It cost me around $5.00 and I can easily run back and get another roll if I ever needed to.

I've never heard of Frog tape, nor of Jammy Dog tape myself.
I have a roll of Tamiya tape that I think that I've used once or twice, but not for masking.
I buy the cheap low tack green painters tape in different widths and use that. It even comes in a 5mm width.
But not for masking...
I almost never tape anything for masks I'll use blue tack (sticky stuff used to hold posters to the wall) or if I need a straight line I've used Post-It notes.
But I'm and armour modeller, who needs straight lines.
I mostly use tape to hold things together when I'm gluing something tricky.

And another one here that uses Tamiya Tape. Not tried anything else but after reading lot's of reviews on the stuff decided it was worth the money. Not like I use huge amounts of it.

I love Tamiya tape, but i rarely use it actually because there is not often the need to do so. Usual crepe tape is good aswell, used it on my MiG 29 with the same results as Tamiya tape, but crepe tape is much more beneficial.
I also have a big roll of revell airbushing masking material which can be useful for certain things but overall it is not as handy as tape.

Is this Jammydog tape only sold in the UK or is this a product easily obtainable in the US ? Always open to trying something that may be a bit better then the current workhorse which right now is Tamiya. Im sure each has its use but this may be a tape Im interested in buying some of if its as good if not better then Tamiya and available in the US.

I've bought it from ebay uk before now, it's not that it's better than tamiya it that's its avaiable in thinner widths,making it useful for more precise making it's very good and well worth a try

Tamiya tape is awesome, have all sizes and always try to keep it in stock here, its not perfect but close, one thing I've found is that sometimes even it can be a bit too tacky depending on the paint finish used, beware on Alclad lacquers especially as they will lift easily, only had to do this once so far and I actually layed out the Tamiya tape strips I needed on clean plastic card and peeled them off slowly to lose a little grip but still remain sticky before applying to the model and I just about got away with it.

As regards using Tamiya tape for a clean line on a model with recessed panel lines, try slowly laying it from panel to panel and creasing the tape into each panel line as you go with a finger nail or similar tool before laying the tape on the next panel, then giving a soft but firm rub down on the edge you intend to spray ... this should help paint leaking through, for raised panel lines you would need to be extra careful.

For larger areas you can try other materials to bulk cover as Tamiya tape can get expensive masking the whole model, here's how I did the front number plate masking for my RC166 model as i could not get the decal to conform. Spot the bit that's not fully rubbed down, i did sort it before spraying white



It came out OK.



I have some of the other types of tape the guys have mentioned too but not tried them yet.
