Back modelling

Hi guys don’t know if you can help.Back modelling which I haven’t done since I was a teenager.Just bought myself an Airfix Messerschmit 109 1/48 scale.Have been following Paul’s tutorials on YouTube (just fantastic thanks Paul).Have airbrushed for first time and reasonably happy with result using acrylic paints.My concern is that much of my hard work has been spoiled by fact that the paint job has been damaged by my handling of the model for full completion-paint has marked and scratched.Can anyone give advice about how to avoid this in future bully’s.I live in NZ and unable to obtain Pledge Klear for gloss coat but will try a similar product that we have here and has been recommended on local forums (Long Life floor polish !!!)-wish me luck. Great to be part of the forum and looking forward to advancing my somewhat limited skill set

Welcome to the forum

Have you any photos of the damage? You definitely want to protect your paint-job with some clear varnish, and I would recommend one that's designed specifically for modelling instead of floor polish. Any half-decent modelling shop will have something you can use.

Hi Beaky. There are a couple of ways to prevent the paint scuffing and coming off. Most importantly, the paint needs to be sprayed over a primer coat, as acrylics don't adhere well to bare plastic. I'd also recommend handling the model with gloves. And as you mentioned, an overall gloss coat to seal the paint and create a suitable decalling surface is essential.

I am a self admitted fondler. I wear paint from the corners of my builds like crazy
Currently the edges of an engine block for a F1 car. This is what touch up paints are for

Alternatively, if you are an airplane builder there are stands that support the wings and fuselage so you don’t touch the plane
There is a motorcycle jig that sets up a bike into a form to allow manipulation with less overfondleration.
I have tried white cotton gloves...nah it just leaves lint and white cotton glove prints in the paint
Use a stronger clear coat like aqua gloss clear that might help
