Global Scale Modeller

Hi, I have just been sorting through my model stash and have realised just how many half finished models I still have to complete. It is not that I lose interest in them but more that I get half way through a build and see a certain review or a new kit release and decide I just have to start a new kit. At the moment I am at the decaling stage of an Eduard F6F 3 Hellcat and already I want to start on a first edition 72nd scale Airfix E-boat but need to finish a 48th scale Panther G. So am I on my own here or does anyone else have this dilemma ? Be interested to here so I will leave you with it, happy modelling Dave.

This week is the first time I have ever had more than one on the go at once (in this case a 1/72 beriev be2 and a 1/72 StuG III).

I knowI am rare with being like this and most modellers have many on the go at once.

Yes ive got a small "to do" pile, a tamiya Thunderjet, sas land rover and most of all a 1/48 hasagawa phantom which I really want to get finished I may do that next after the p40 is done.

I've always got two models on the work bench too, it used to be two so I could crack of with the other while waiting for paint to dry etc on the other one, now it's a video build one for emodels and one of my own builds too.

Haha.. Now this is funny because I only have 3 models and they are all on the go at the moment. Bates House, Lost in Space, Space Pod and Pegasus Hobbies Galaxy Quest Protector. All simple models but good for my level of plastic modeling.

I used to have one on the go, but now I have a 1/48 Airfix Seafire which has had basecoats on, I have a 1/72 Harrier GR9, also had basecoats, I have a Revell 1/72 FW190 A8, also had basecoats. I have a Revell 1/48 Mosquito which needs the canopy then its done. I have a Revell 1/32 Sea Lynx with just basecoats on. And I am building a Me110..

So yeah, quite a few on the go!

I have two seriously on the go and about four on the shelf of doom....

I used to have a wack of models on the go All at the same time!

But I had to sort my time and limit my distractions! I must have A.D.D.

Not saying it helps but finishing what's on my bench now a days is the best
Value for my money! I used to push out 1 or 2 kits a year before! with
Many returning to their boxes. Now I got 3 out
In 4 months! Thanks to a little discipline and good friends!

I have only recently gotten back onto modelling but I have fallen into having more than one on the go already 1/32 Trumpeter A10, 1/32 Trumpeter F16, and I couldn't wait to start the 1/72 Saturn V.

This is quickly turning into an addiction.

Saying that I'm a just a short hop to finish the 1\72 T-80. Going to try out the AK stuff i bought.

LOL. But it might be due to many factors?

What puzzles me?? is how do you keep the interest alive? If anything "new" that comes across your bench! Which is getting crowded by the ever increasing models on it? How do you guys keep it organized? This is a Serious question by the way! for those willing to answer it! As I used to be like that and could never finish anything!

I currently have a Tamiya 1/48 Me 262 1A in the final stages of completion, a Hobbycraft 1:120 scale Bluenose schooner, which i put back in the box after giving the hull a second coat of paint, a 1:60 scale Trumpeter Mayflower and now a 1:96 scale USS Constitution just recently given to me by a friend that doesnt have time to complete it. Because of my complete and total addiction to aircraft the ships always seem to sit in the background waiting for me to get to them and when i finally do i see yet another aircraft in the local hobby shop screaming at me to buy it. I keep telling myself i have to start working on the ships but.....

For myself the only reason I have more than one on the go is that I can keep modelling constantly, I can paint one model, and while that's drying continue with the other one and vise versa.

For me the most I've had is two, and I did it because sometimes I loose my mojo! so That is why I pick another one. Usually sometihing that I know is going to be easy to build.

Ok don't snigger at the back but currently actively working on 6, Airfix Stirling, Airfix Dambuster gift set Lancaster with Dam, 3 x Airfix Gnats and Airfix Gladiator all 1:72.

Languishing on the back burner another 24 started kits, it was 29 in January so I am trying to treat this affliction.

There are no Cream or ointment for that itch ! LOL

I also plead guilty to having a workbench overload with unfinished kit. I have a old tool Airfix spitfire MKIX kit with just decals to add, 2 half built old tool Airfix typhoons, Opel truck and PaK40 cannon kit nearly finished with just a few bits to add and repair, quite a few aircraft with paint on but no glue work started, loads of figures of RAF or Luftwaffe ground crew for the RAF/Luftwaffe airfield kits from Airfix, about 3 Airfix tank kits with parts painted but no glue work started also.

I hope to finish the Spitfire today sometime, or at least get the decals on and maybe get them varnished over. Would also like to get a steering wheel column botched for the Opel truck and get that out the way also, it has been on the bench for ages. The others will get finished once I get back into the swing of things with this hobby, been doing too much work on the same type of parts for months on end, I need a break to refresh my mind, get the bench cleared and start again anew.

Glad to see that I am not alone in having a workload too big for the bench.

Here are my reasons
1/72 B-1 fell off the shelf and some bit smashed off. Until I find them it's on hold
1/72 SR-71 lost the decals when moving house, on hold til italeri send some more
1/48 F-4 phantom smashed the canopy, waiting on a vac form replacement
1/35 accurate armour 432 this really personal to me so I want to take it slow and get it right. Also it's all resin, which I'm not used to.
1/35 17lbr M-10 as above (apart from the resin)
So when I'm working on the 432 or m10, if I find I'm 'losing my mojo', I'll start something different rather than rushing a task and end up ruining it.

Yep , That's how I rationalized my models back then! Same view and Attitude toward the hobby.
But my lack of output made it difficult to manage all those projects !

Just finished a pair of kits for a contest so only 1 on the bench at the moment (for another contest) but there is likely to be another added at some point.
Banch isnt big enough to do more than 2 at once, unless they are eggplanes

I've bought about 10 or more kits in the past month because my local hobby shop is going out of business.

Ha ha! Me too mate. I now have 2 I am actually working on and when the Sci-Fi SiG gets started that will make 3 plus 2 others that are gathering dust.

Makes me curious as to how many finished models you fellas manage in a year. 1.. 10... none?
I get headaches just imagining what some of your benches look like.

I'll keep a single project on the bench and that's it. If I get bored of it I stop working on it for a day or two.
Normally I will be at the bench for 4-6 hours a day (not all at once), more on the weekends.
My family sleeps... I don't.
So I can finish a kit in about 6 weeks, 8 if I build a diorama for it.
I don't have the organizational skills, or concentration to do more than one at a time.
It kinda starts to feel like work if I have too much on the go at once.
And that's no fun.

I've just had several weeks off work and while I was off I had an airfix 1/72 mosquito and bristol beaufighter italeri 1/48 f-86f sabre airfix 1/76 Cromwell tank. And a model made by a company called 21st century toys 1/32 macchi C205 Veltro (not a good kit at all probs explains why it was only two quid lol) on the go. The only down side to having five models on the go was that it didn't seem like I had any time off work : }

I used to be a one-kit-at-a-time guy, but as I type I have the following in various stages of nowhere-near-completion:

I have around 20 or so kits in various stages of completion including
3 x aircraft carriers
7 x aircraft (mainly jet types)
6 x Armour
1 x sub
1 x battleship
1 x chopper
1 x truck (1/72)

..... get distracted pretty easy or if I find it being two difficult change models (see something on tv or read in a book and thats it off into the stash to see what I have) but in the last week or so I am making an effort to minimise the amount of un-built projects before starting new ones, and I am finding it hard ...
