First some history-introduced to the front line in 1916the AEG was popular with its crews being easier to fly and well armed although not as famous as the Gotha bombers the AEG could carry a bigger bomb load than any other German bomber of the period. An example of the aircraft captured at the end of WW1 still survives in the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum.

The box art shows what I presume is a sunset view of the bombers going on a night mission and on opening you see the box is full to the brim with grey styrene sprues. No flash is present and all the parts have WNW usual detail molded in.

The upper wing surfaces and fuselage on the real aircraft were of the dark lozenge pattern to help you with this you get 5 sheets of decals to reproduce this. looks like decal heaven .

A small amount of etch with a name plate is provided.

The instructions are WNW top class, clear and precise standard with pictures of the Canadian example and WW1 pictures included.

I also have the help to build booklet plus some wood decals if needed and I got the AEG bomber crew set from Copper State Models.

Lovely looking bit of kit. However I not sure whether I should be either envious or glad that it's not in my stash. It's kind of daunting to me. However I know you will do a great job. Keep the pic's flowing

I do understand where your coming from Digger,Its like this would be so easy to make a mess of and its out of my comfort zone. I have built a couple of there kits in the past the Snipe [late] and the Roland [late] .

Very nice I'd be proud of them. I think your comfort zone is expanding rapidly

really want to try a WWs kit one day. But I too feel a bit daunted by the thought of the detail. My wife thinks we should visit the Peter Jackson built museum at Omaka, Blenheim, NZ. There is his collection of WW1 planes.

We start with the cockpit, after some pre-painting assembly starts by making up the base and adding the two rear bomb bays with bombs. The seats were made up front and rear and the pilots seat also assembled but not fixed in position for now as I have figures to fit later.

The partitioning panels were added after fitting various parts like the battery,pedals,compass and ammo rack at the rear. The remaining side panel had another rack of bombs fitted and then it was fixed in place.

More done on the cock pit the rear gun mount spigots have been attached along with the rear, central and forward seatbelt bars then the seatbelts were fitted. The instrument panel was made up and the decals added then fixed in position. The last thing fitted at the front was the compass and mount.

WnW supply lozenge decals that go inside the fuselage at points where you have access to see inside the rear fuselage these points are just aft of the rear gunner where a glass door can be opened to fire down at any aircraft trying to sneak up on them the other area is where the tail skid will be attached.

So after the inner fuselage was sprayed black at the rear and cockpit green at the front the decals were added along with some bracing wires.

The cockpit is only dry fitted for now as I have started making up the three guns one that is fitted to fire through the trap door should be fitted before final assembly of the fuselage.

Three more

The three guns have been made up and painted in the next picture you can see the lower gun mount position at the rear gunners position. Once the gun was positioned on its pivot point I made a circular pad from plasticard and glued it to the bottom of the gun mount this keeps the gun fixed but also allows it to traverse.

The Cockpit was next mounted onto the fuselage side and the bottom glass panel that opens so the lower rear gun can be fired added and then the other half of the fuselage was glued to the first half. Next the molded lacing was added at the rear of the bottom fuselage hiding the joint here and the rear bomb bay deck added with more molded lacing.

The mouldings are very good just watch the fit on painted surfaces as the tolerances are very tight so may need to scrape edges

The black overspray on the edges of the fuselage were very thin so the liquid poly just melted straight through to the plastic and welded it together what you see is just the black weld not a line of paint. If the paint is too thick I do generally scrape it off . The fuselage will be painted dark blue and gloss coated ready for the lozenge decals which cover all the Fuselage. The fuselage and lower wing centre has been undercoated and then sprayed with Tamiya Sea Blue which is more a dark green blue. When dry a couple of coats of gloss varnish will go on as a base for the lozenge camo decals

Spent most of today getting the lozenge decals placed on the fuselage and lower centre wing. Now to let them dry out overnight and then more decals can be placed on top of them.

Yep every side of the fuselage has a decal covering it . The only place that will not have a decal is the upper lower wing where the engines sit and the rudder

The decal fest continues the Shark face,some no hold here markings were added along with the crosses to the fuselage the lower wings upper surface had two small decals added as well. The lower wing was then fixed to the fuselage and the whole aircraft given a coat of matt clearcote to tone down the decals. The first of the engine mount struts were cleaned up, painted and fixed in position.

The tail surfaces come next the fin and the tailplain were sprayed and then given a gloss clearcote, all then had decals added top and bottom as did the two elevators. Once the decals have dryed out they will be matt clearcoated before fitting to the fuselage.

If I had followed the instructions I should be building the engines now but I like to get the bigger WnW kits on there legs first so the undercarriage and tail skid have been added along with the tail assembly and bracing rods apart from the rudder. The weighted wheels are nearly ready to go on after being painted and the decals added.

The weighted wheels have been fixed in position and the wheel covers added just the rigging left here to do.

The two Mercedes engines were prepped, undercoated and assembled. Some light weathering has been added oil around joints and components and some dry brushing to the radiator faces.

Not going to go over board with the weathering as you are given the choice of cowled or uncowled engines and I have opted for the cowled option. It would have been nice to have a half cowled option too ie one side cowled and the other open.

The cowls in all the pictures I have of the A.E.G are very worn with scratches and missing patches of paint a sign they were removed a lot for repairs and maintenance.

The cowls have been painted aluminum then chipping solution sprayed on before the top coat went on then some serious chipping went on before a coat of matt varnish went on to seal it all. The engines were next mounted into the lower cowl and the side cowls placed on. Once the lower struts were fixed the engines were mounted onto the lower wing using the fuselage struts already fitted to steady the whole
assembly. The exhausts were painted rust and fitted but they need toning down to finish them off properly.

The wings have been undercoated, top coated and are now in the process of being gloss clearcoted.

The forward and rear gun rings have been painted and I have also started on the crew figures by cleaning them up and giving them a coat of white undercoat.

The exhausts have been dirtied up a little more and look better now. The wings have had 2 coats of gloss and the decals have been applied to the lower wings, they will be left to dry and the top wing decals added next.

All the lozenge decals have now been placed on the wings just the markings to add to them now.

The decals are now complete with the adding of the markings to the rudder and the top and bottom wings. Next its a couple of coats of matt varnish to seal it all up.

I have started painting the figures here they are with the base coat done.

The figures are just about done just some touching up to do here and there The darker picture shows the true color of the figures the other two are with flash.

The crew has been positioned and the central upper wing and struts fixed in position. The lower wings have been dry fitted to check that they fit ok

Made up the bombs and bomb racks [the bombs are drying after being undercoated] and started on the rigging by completing the undercarriage wires.

It just keeps getting better
