Corvette C7R

Post by jmurphy18 »

Good Day Folks. I am going to start a Revell 2015 Corvette C7R kit build. A Revell build is new for me since I have returned to the hobby. Have not built one since I was a teenage and that was a loooonnnng time ago (70's). So I hope there have been a few improvements  Any way this is the kit I am building
Image

I purchased the Scale Motorsports Upgrade kit as an addition to this kit and I will use their decals in leu of the kit decals on the body
Image
Image

Paint were purchased from Splash paints and is Laguna Blue. The clear coat is also Splash Paint P2K

So, are you not doing a race car, or are you doing the race livery - just in blue?? Either way, ready! :thumb2:

Cool :thumb2:
The Splash paints are great, but I had to have someone (bfrd) hold my hand through doing the two part painting when I did the green for the Mercedes.

Make sure good Ultimate primer layer....not stupid thick, just well covered and cured.
Three THIN coats of each bottle. Don't panic as the first one looks rough and then the second will smooth things out
If you pool the paint too much in the early coats, the paint can wrinkle the plastic
It is challenging but makes an awesome looking paint job if you nail it

Update: I layed down some ultimate primer. 3 coats of grey. This is my test coat as I planed to sand smooth the primer. Good thing as I found a few spots I missed on flash, rear bumper and fender and a mold line on the door pillar. Yesterday I applied 2-3 lite coats of Ultimate white. This stuff does does not go down as nice as the grey or black :? I wanted the blue to pop more from the white.
Image
Today I wet sanded the body & small parts so I could lay down the 2 part Splash paint. I followed the instructions I got from Sam @ Splash paints. I missed Scott’s not and advice. I layed down 1 thin coat then a second @ the wrong pressure @ 20. I got spitting and I ended up sanding the body back with 6000 & 8000 grit. After this and letting the body settle I reshot 6 lite coats and the body turned out well. I then shot the pearl coat same settings & ~ 7 coats. All totaled I have about 15 coats on the body. I was out in the heat in the garage a while 3-4 hrs
Image
So here I sit and I need to determine my next step

Update: I went ahead and added decals today. A lot more of a process than I though. There were a lot of decals to be added. I used the Scale Motorsports kit for decals and I chose the LeMans setup for decals on the car vs the Daytona IMSA setup. I thought the #64 would be different from everyone else's
Here is what I did today.

Update #4: I laid dawn the Splash P2K this morning. I was trying to get out before the high heat hit.... Suppose to be 96 feels like 109 with a dewpoint 76.... ugh. I was out at 8:30 in my garage. I cleaned the floor of all the dust and dirt. I replaced all the layering in the Bench Vent with clean. I sprayed everything down with my mister floor and bench vent to keep the dust and debris off the P2K. I still got 2 hairs but I was able to get them off my 2nd coat with tweezers and all is good so far. Temps still sucked. 82 feels like 94 dewpoint 77
****** Dewpoint ===> Temperature it takes to rain so at 77 five more degrees and I would have had rain in my garage

All is good and I took a quick shot with my iPhone before I stuffed the body in the Tupperware container.Image
I will not see this now till I return from vacation on Labor day 9/2. Have a great week folks!!

Thanks so much Scott! I have a full head of hair so no problem with the sticky stuff sticking to me. I did pull them off and stick them to a pad with the tweezers! This stuff was really sticky! yuck! :ooops:

Yeah, have a good time man!! This is looking better than I would've ever imagined - I thought, "Wait, what? A blue factory Corvette race car"! sacrilege, blasphemy!! I was like:

Image

But after seeing the paint and decals down - I'm gonna send a pic to GM and tell'em that they surely would have sold MANY more Corvettes had they had you do the graphic designing. I can't believe how awesome it's looking. I really need an airbrush so I can paint all these cool colors you crazy cats are using! This may be on the weird side, but excited for your return! :D

LOL, Thanks Scott and it has only been 3 days on the drying today so I did not want to put my fat fingers on it last night and cause a Murphy's law which I knew would happen. :ooops: So waiting till I come home......... Damn it hard as I so want to see the body. Leaving in 1 hr anyway and of course it's pouring. :bash:

Update #6: As requested I took a shot with the body on the chassis. I just played this completed painted body on the raw chassis and wheels.
Image

Shot is from my iPad Pro as I am having issues with my laptop  BL it is terminal I need a new one as the repairs are very costly. The good news is my wife just OK a replacement, but the bad on that is the cost $$$. Guess I am broke for a while. It was old and I knew it was coming... :). Put a smile on just build another model right!

I just discovered putting the body on the axles are to long  : Going to have to cut these down to fit. This was not in the instructions. Must be a "Murphy's law" thing. (Pun on my last name)

HAGD Folks and stay dry! Hurricane should hit here sometime late tomorrow. I think just wind and lots of rain if it stays out in the ocean.

Interior update: I got some work done on the interior today before I hit a stopping point. I have all the parts primed & painted just waiting to be assembled
Here is a shot of the front the shows the metal pullies of the detail kit & the engine work
Image
This side shot showed the power boxes plus the ones I added and my 1st attempt at doing wiring. Wires are some leftover speaker wires & the green is 30 yr old Radio Shack wiring ~ 24 gauge that has been in my toolbox. The thick black stuff if from my kite flying supplies.
Image
Here is a shot from the drivers side. You get the metal parts for a belt but no belt.....
Thanks to Scott @Twokidsnosleep for the tips on how to proceed. Right now the seat is just sitting there till I get the belts done.
Image
After this I get to finish the dash, detail that area then the rest of zone roll bars

OK Folks here is the final update: I just finished the build as I got the seatbelts in. The scale Motorsports kit is only 1.5mm wide in seatbelts so after destroying 3 different sets I took another approach  I took a break and came back and tried another idea and left my original till I had better skills. :nena:
Belts are in, hardware is on, roll cage is in as is the dash. wires are back in place
Right view showing the seat and belts
Image
left view showing all the wiring I did
Image
view from above shows the metal radiator and other stuff like the parts on the motor and decals on airboxes
Image

Final fit of the chassis

hood off from the front. FYI balanced on that big air scoop

That is it for the C7R Thanks for the comments and looking!
