Hello

Post by dp037 »

Hello
My aim is to start building models to a high standard.
There. I’ve said it. But will I get there and what is a high standard?

I built a handful models in the 70’s when I was a small boy. I really enjoyed building them, but was always a little disappointed they were not painted, had panel gaps, glue marks, etc. All the issues a novice suffers from.
But I have always wanted to get in to modelling, only to find I don’t know how to get round the above stated issues and then get disheartened with the building the model.

The last time I had ago at building was early 2000’s during the winter months when there is nothing else to do on a night, other than watch tv repeats. My model of choice was Revell’s Lancia 037 and was really pleased with the build and basic painting. But before I could get the decals on, something fell on it and broke the front axle. I was gutted, decided to stop the work I started on Revell’s Audi Quattro Rallye and put them away until I can do this in a more professional way. That is have a dedicated bench space and maybe an air brush.

In the intervening years I have bought or received a number of rally car kits, in other words I have become a collector/hoarder of kits. One of kits I have always been looking out for in the local art shop & toy shops is the Lancia Delta S4 and it was while doing an internet search for this in June that I stumbled across Scalemates and an inbox video review by Paul-ISM.

This was the missing link I needed to be able to think about actually building some of the kits that I have collected over the years. The ISM videos by Paul have provided a great deal of knowledge on how to over come build issues and how to air brush and hopefully the forum will help when things go wrong.

I now feel confident to start building models. Once I have dedicated bench area. Bought virtually everything on Paul-ISM product list. But I have waited nearly 40 years, so a few more weeks/months won’t hurt.

Cheers
David

Hi David and welcome to the forum :hi:

There's loads of info on here and if you have a question, just ask. Two things to remember though is that everybody has their own way of doing things and you may get several answers. Pick one and if it doesn't work move on to the next :thumb2: The other thing to remember is that everybody starts off at the same level, gains knowledge and experience and ends up a decent modeller - everybody learns at a different pace though.

There's also a great Facebook site: International Scale Modeller a live show on Friday nights with great laughs, tips and hints and even free prize draws: ISM Friday Night Live at the Bench and if you have a webcam there's off-air hangouts where you can join live which I thoroughly recommend for those long winter nights: Off Air Hangout Group.

Currently on the bench:

1/32 Tamiya F-15E Strike Eagle
1/48 GWH T-33 Shooting Star
1/48 Revell (Monogram) F-15C Eagle

Thank you for the welcome messages and Meme 😄

Sorry, but I don’t use Facebook, in fact I don’t really use social media except the closed network apps like Slack or Discord when I was gaming on the PS4 to organise group games.
In fact I have never joined a Forum 😱
Well, there is first time for everything. 😏

I have created a Flicker account so I can post some pictures of models in the near future and if I want to paste videos I can use my Youtube account.

I have finished installing a desk come work bench in the little bedroom we call the office and now I need to look at what basic tools & paints I will need to learn some basic modelling techniques.

Should I set up a Scalemates Stash account?

Cheers

Yes to the Scalemates set up
It will save you from re-purchasing something you already bought but see it again on sale for a perfect price and now you want it, but did you buy it already or not???
Also great to look up other kits and accessories

Yes definitely use scalemates it has all the advantages as Scot mentioned. Plus a wishlist, pricing, trading kits, news, reviews and history of kits.
Can definitely save you money and stop you from purchasing a dog of a kit.
You might like to sign up to these as well
