Global Scale Modeller

This is a follow on to the enjoyable Sherman I've just done elsewhere that I originally bought for this gig but got carried away. Because of this I intend to steal the storage from that kit plus the figures and hopefully create some sort of diorama thingy.
I don't intend to copy and paste the Wikipedia entry but there is one if you're interested its there and if you're further fascinated by this kit then there's a great YouTube series by Shane Smyth making it much better than I will...

So, as I plunge ever onwards into some diorama yet to be identified, I have been studying a little archaeology. I have been working on two Tamiya US infantry sets, one old and one really old being 1995 and 1974! added to this but not pictured here will also be the 2002 figures from the Sherman as well as the ones from the M10 kit itself. I probably wont use all of these as some dont fit the nebulous picture. As you will note, my entire life has been taken over removing moulding seams from parts of anatomies... The other two are the Verlinden panzerfaust team

Isn't that M10 a brand new Tamiya kit? (or last couple of years or so?) If so, then I'm pulling up a beer and a chair and will be watching this one with interest - especially so as you're going to do a 'diorama thingy'.

I like VP figures (great shame they're not around anymore), but the mould blocks on those look like they could be a right pain in the... to remove. Same with some of those seams on your Tam figures. Looks like you've got your work cut out there chap!

Good luck with this; if it goes as well as your Sherman then I think it's going to be great.

Yes been wondering how the new Tamiya M10 will look.... shame on the figures. Your going to need a angle grinder to flatten them.

Shame you cant incorporate that wadge of Resin into the dio, just use it as ground-work

so I've moved on a bit now over the weekend, the Basingstoke Disco team are now assembled and primed (Ultimate Black)... I'm not sure how many of these will actually get used but at least they're built for another time.





and I have finally begun the M10, there are a number of pushout marks mostly where they arent visible but some are.



the assembled bits were primed with Ultimate black and then Real Colors flat white







I then gave it a bit of a wash to start dirtying it down



Whilst at it I attacked the boxes that came with the Sherman kit, these still need a wash or two but look ok.

Nice to see that all those years of break-dancing classes haven't been wasted

Good progress on the AFV as well - the woodwork on the crates looks excellent!

Thats a hell of a dance line-up, mind, more movement than current Strictly Dancing lot.

Just a short pictorial update, because the fit of these Tamiya kits is so good the top isn't affixed to the bottom which will allow me to come back and weather it later.
Undercarriage on, this is all straightforward Sherman stuff tbh



As I say top in place now with all the fittings, on to the turret tomorrow.

I'm really interested in how the internal turret painting going to go, being as you've opted for full assembly before painting Paul.

I often over think my builds, spending loads of time and effort on areas that you might be able to see, only to find you can't on the built kit. The application of PE in a case in point for me, not only elongating the build it increases the cost for little gain

I'm looking at ways to speed up my builds, but still keeping the standards

Actually Kev I'm with you all the way. I often drop out stuff that's invisible, I don't subscribe to the "I know it's there" school (although I understand those who do) and in that vein I often go for the kit plastic over pe apart from grills etc on tanks or seatbelts on aircraft, I admire those with the dexterity and the determination but I don't have it. With this being open topped I think I can get paint everywhere I need to so we shall have to see...

The olive drab inside and out will go on fine it did with mine.

Just a quick update, primer on: Ultimate black with some highlights in Ultimate grey followed by an initial thin coat of AK Real Color Olive drab





I also gave the figures a quick swipe.with AK figures Olive brown

The shading/fading effect looks great Paul

just when it seemed to be going so well I find myself in deep decal dudgeon most of them silvered badly and as you can see one on the turret broke One tip I would offer to anyone who is building this kit, leave the centre 4 applique armour bolts off as the decal doesn't fit over them very well, I had to swap from my intended one plus do a little surgery. I think now I'm just going to push on and finish this as is, doing a diorama will just constantly offend my eye, I'll just have to build something else to use the dirty dozen figures I have.....

Could you just remove the decal and use a mask to paint a star on there.

That's come along really well since I last had chance to check in mate.

It's a bugger about those decals though. Couple of things I've done in the past is either to use a stronger setting solution such as Daco strong or Walters Solvaset (haven't tried the Ultimate ones yet but their strong one is supposed to work well too). And/or lightly score across the decal with a sharp scalpel and then reapply solution until the decal behaves.

As Neil states, I've used Walters Solvaset to lift decals in the past worked a treat.

Superb build Paul. Love the tones on the olive drab, looks really effective. Tamiya decals can really suck, I feel your pain.

Really enjoying your build. Top drawer stuff.

Stowage or a camo net cover any mistake, by the modeller or the manufacturer.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but by that point I'd varnished it so all escape manoeuvres were void

I have moved it on slightly since. These 50 cal rounds both fired and ready are amazing!

Nice work on the figures mate - that splinter camo is a real handful isn't it!

I've got one of those "double-base" Miniart sets in the stash somewhere but haven't tried to get it together yet so will be interested to see how you approach it. I was thinking of either trimming down one or both of the edges completely to get a reasonable match on the two halves, reinforcing underneath and then "fixing" any detail issues with putty OR just covering the join with debris

I know what you mean, I'd love to do it the first way but can't help feeling I'll end up doing it the debris way. I've looked on line and although there's a number of kits with 2 bases noone seems to have had a go on YouTube, If anyone does know one please link to it?

Oh Paul, that really is superb.
I did a quick double take as the top shot of the crew in the fighting compartment is sublime. Really sublime.
The shadowing on the jackets is great. Have you dry-brushed or just thin washed?

Just had a quick look for the set I've got - maybe give this a look:


Looks to be quite long but might be useful in places.

Hope that might help, but will have another look around and see if I can find any more.

The single based ones are ok and can be built up into something decent as long as you don't lose patience with the Vac-form moulding and its limitations - definitely worth a go

Unexpectedly the base has gone far better than the buildings and I'll post a picture when they look more like the picture on the box and less like filler flying in formation...

Here however is the base following a first test prime.

This is going to be the next area I dip my toe in, did a couple or dioramas as a kid nothing to these standards. I'm watching with great interest.

Thanks for the comments guys, Neil I glued the bases to cardboard with pva then to a stiff bit of board from the Range ( Other hobby stores are available...) then filled with the ever popular PPP a d tried to carve the gaps back in. But you already knew that

I've now made some progress with the two buildings, this was using Lifecolour paint on top of Ultimate.









They now have a coat of varnish ready to do the door and the weathering.
