Paul's 'EGG' build buddy build Sept 19

So there's an 'EGG' build on the go starting today (16/09/19) over on the ISM Facebook site. If you want to join feel free, it runs for a month and can be any scale (?) of egg plane/ship/tank/sci-fi etc - any egg kit. No prizes So lets see what you can build. My efforts will be detailed below in my first real build thread

Not sure that these are to scale but I opened the Hasegawa Su-33 Flanker D of their Eggplane series. As a build review this will be short and sweet with around 35 parts on four sprues which when separated still need a bit of cleanup. It's supposed to be a 'press together' kit but I've opted to glue it as well because even when I use glue, bits still fall off

1. Boxart is........ interesting.


Once opened the contents are in one bag with the clear parts contained within another bag. Scintillating stuff eh?

2. Contents.


The plastic is quite soft and being stuffed all in one bag is scratched enough that it requires sanding and not just buffing. Of course it could just be me but as you can see from the pic below, OCD I can take or leave

3. Sprues.


One thing that did concern me is that despite being in a separate bag within the bag inside the box there was two scratches to the inside of the clear canopy that will require removal. Al is not happy about that Another thing is that the sprue gates on the upper and lower halves join on a curve. OK they are reasonably small but they still require cleanup. Other sprue gates locate mid panel lines so some scribing is needed.

This thing is small - 1/72 I hate but this is rediculous

Progress - day ???:

It seems inevitable that I make mistakes and that more than anything holds me back - I've just got too many to fix Anyway, cleaned the model and bits with IPA AND Ultimate Airbrush cleaner (just to be sure) then sprayed 5 coats ofUMP White primer building it up slowly before and leaving it for 36 hours to cure and be sure:

1. Primer


There then followed a catalogue of errors which saw primer being flaked off, I dropped the Su on the floor and then attempted to paint the cockpit. Spent ages masking off the inside of the cockpit before realising it should have been the fuselage I masked Faffing dyslexia - twists things around in my braincell! But managed the cockpit after a struggle. I also painted the nose and pilots bone dome MRP white.

2. Cockpit.


Then came the decision on what scheme. I decided to do the eggplant scheme although few Su-33's were done in it but it looks pretty and it's my model

3. Underside.


This was the point that I screwed up the most. Having left it overnight (24 hours) I carefully pulled the Tamiya tape off and ended up with a few flakes removed (yes I de-tacked it to within an inch of its life to the extent some bits wouldn't stick). Also it highlighted a few seams and imperfections that required work. After that I masked it again, fixed the errors and masked the underside to paint the engine covers.

4. Engine covers.


So this is where I'm currently at - please note the beautifully heat stained engine covers (probably the best bit of the kit so far). Today I shall prime and topcoat the Canopy and later mask and topcoat the upper surface and spray the wheel wells white (again). Wish me luck........
