Hasegawa Porsche 962C - Blaupunkt

Post by Gary30 »

Right, well it's been a while, so I thought I'd get back to the bench and start a new project, to ease myself back, I thought I'd start with a fairly simple kit and a car I've always had a soft spot for.

So this is the base kit:
Image

I will be building the Blaupunkt version, with these lovely looking Shunko decals:
Image

I do have another 962 kit in the stash, so I will build the Omron version in the future, but it was the Blaupunkt version I remember as a kid, so that's what I'll build.

As said, pretty basic kit, so some sprue shots to start off:

The Joest Blaupunkt version is supposed to have the BBS mesh wheels, but I'm going to have to take a bit of artistic license and use the kit wheels, the front wheels are covered by the brake ducts anyway, so I won't lose too much sleep over it.
Image

With that out of the way, I made a start:
Image
Image
Quick fill of the gaps in the wing, it's underneath so I wasn't too fussy about it:

Sink hole in the body

Filled:

Primered in Ultimate white ready for paint:

And that's where I am at the moment, I have given the main chassis base a quick blow over with primer and thrown some semi-gloss black at it, but I haven't got any photos of that yet, it needs another coat anyway, so it's still a WIP.

This one will all be about the finish of the body as it's a kerbside kit so the detail is lacking underneath, seems like a nice shell though, I've never built a Hasegawa before, I think it'll turn out ok in the end if the decals play nicely.

Thank for looking.

Minor update, as I said earlier, this is all about the body finish rather than the detail (lack of) underneath, so I've painted up most of the other parts now, chassis floor done, I'm happy with the satin finish, it looks a lot smoother in real life than the speckled finish in the photo:
Image

Wheels have had a few coats, home brew mix of Chrome silver, Gun metal and black, they're a different colour depending on which way the light hits them, but I don't think they're dark enough though, so will probably hit them with a misting of black before giving them a clear coat:
Image

And to illustrate the detail, these are the brake discs, no calipers at all, just basic looking discs, nice kit if you just want to throw something together over the course of a week:
Image

My goal is to get the body painted over the next day or two so I can hopefully tackle the decals at the weekend.

Well I've made decent progress over the weekend, managed to lay down the base coat of Friday afternoon, turned out nice, Tamiya X-2 and MLT:

Image

Gave the wheels a gloss coat, I had 1/4 of a bottle of X-22 left, so I decided to throw in a few drops of black and see what happens, turns out it gives a nice dark opaque finish, exactly what I was after:

Image

So with the body and wheels curing for a day or so, I focused my attentions on the rest of the kit, finished off the cockpit, I didn't go mad on details, this is just a 'getting back into it' kit so just keeping things simple as to not kill my mojo, looks ok though, and it will barely be visible through the small windows when complete:

Image

I did decide to give my twist drills a run for their money though, and drilled out the holes in the rear brake discs (front discs are completely covered) first time doing this so I was happy:

Image

Fast forward 24 hours, glued up the discs to the rear of the wheels, painted the nuts and mounted the tyres (ooo errr!) I had Yokohama and Dunlop tyre decals for these kits, but as this car uses Good Year rubber, I decided to leave the tyre walls bare.

Image

And then last night I decided the body was dry enough to attack the decal scheme, wow, that was tough! I've never used Shunko decals before, but they did not want to conform to the curved surfaces, the blue over the front arches was a nightmare, lots of sol, set and X-20A, they just wouldn't play ball, I finally got them down with the use of some heat from a hair dryer, and although they're not 100% perfect, they're close enough and I think they will look good once it's cleaned up and given a good few coats of clear. I'm going to ask Father Christmas for a decal water warmer as the first few I did with warm water went down great, but then I got lazy and as the water cooled they became more stiff, so my fault rather than Shunko I think, But anyway.....

.....this is where we're at:

Image

Loose dry fit of the rear wing to give some idea of how it will look:

Image

I don't know when clear coat will be though, I'm thinking about trying proper 2K for the first time on this one, or stick to what I know and use Mr Hobby GX112, I don't have either in my supplies though, so I will need to purchase something before I can progress much further :

Man!! that is some great progress, Gary! :th: :th:

Wheels look fantastic - I like mixing my own "color" up, that you can never duplicate.

Btw, I picked up one of those Mr. Coffee single cup warmers at Bed Bath & Beyond locally.
https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-Warmer ... 167&sr=8-4

It was actually $1 less at Bed Bath & Beyond, plus I used the 20% off coupon. I've had it for about a year now, so it may have been on sale - but it works great! In fact, it works so well that I bought one for actual coffee at work.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing your 962 finished up, it is looking great. :cheers2:

I’m definitely getting a decal warmer! Thanks for the link man, Amazon is full of variants of the same thing so I’ll just pick one. Speaking of decals, after a good few days now, they have really dried out and settled down well on the body now, really happy how they’ve turned out.

I’ve ordered some Pro Range 2K (the same stuff Obi Wan Paul uses) but there’s been a delay with the delivery so I’m just trying to sort that out before I can carry on, was hoping to clear it this weekend but that’s not going to happen now :wall:

Yes, I think those things will all work about the same... I have left that one on overnight once or twice, so if you're concerned about that pick up one that has an auto shut-off. They're a little bit more expensive but may be worth it. They also have some that have adjustable temp setting, you can kinda spend what you want. For me though, the $10 works fine and I just made a little note that I put on my light switch that says "WARMER" and I haven't left it on "accidentally" since. :D

And the Porsche is looking really good, I'm a sucker for anything race car, but I like the fact that you are doing a "version" that wasn't what you bought. I have yet to be that bold. Anyway, hope you're shipment comes in soon.

Just to provide a quick update on this, I have a decal warmer on the way (too late for this build!) but hopefully it should be good for the future, 16 Watts seems to be the going rate for a decent heat output, so we'll see when it lands if it's up to the job or not.

On to the 962, well, the first time for me using proper 2 part clear, and I have to say I'm REALLY impressed with it, used it as per Paul's protocol, thinning more with each coat and it went down lovely at 30psi. It's currently curing in the airing cupboard so I haven't got any photos, but on the test piece I did it seems to have dried rock solid already, but I'm not going to rush it as that is my Achilles heel normally and end up with fingerprints in everything  so it's going to be in there until the weekend to make sure. I don't think I'm going to polish it, the finish is pretty good as it is, and as it is a race car, in my opinion, they look better without a perfect mirror finish.

Finished all the other bits and bobs now too, windows masked and painted, headlights done, wiper painted etc, it's just going to be a bit of detail to pick out on the body and final assembly and it'll be done. Pics to follow.

This build has really re-ignited my mojo, and the Tyrell P34 is already on the bench waiting for my grubby mitts, note to self, if your heart is not 100% into the subject, don't even bother starting the build.

Thanks for looking in Barry!

I've spotted your forthcoming Hasegawa Nissan build, I'll be keeping a close eye on that as I've got my eye on the rest of the Group C cars from Hasegawa now and was thinking of picking up the Nissan R91 and R89, so would love to see how you get on with it. Tag me in when you start it, I'm sure I'll spot it though.

Yes sir, will do. I've got to order my paint booth today, and hopefully by the time that comes in the Integra will be close to finished. Gonna try and do the Nissan R91 with the airbrush - so it may be a painful experience.

I managed to get this one completed over the last week, only my second kit of 2019 complete..... :tw:

I was VERY bench rusty before I started, and in the words of politicians everywhere, lessons have definitely been learned, so I'm happy with that, as that was the sole reason I built this, just to spark my mojo again without being overly fussy or precious about it. Not perfect, but it looks nice in the cabinet, I will get some decent photos done and put up in the gallery, but just so you get an idea, this is what it looks like:

Image

Nice simple kit overall, clear parts were fiddly though and tough to bond in cleanly. I have another one in the stash that I will definitely build at some point in the Omron box scheme.

Thanks for reading.
