Water

Post by digger303 »

Just going to prod the hornet nest a little.
Who makes the best water effects kit.
The easiest and most forgiving. Having to add resin 1mm at a time is not very forgiving it seems to me.
cheers All and thanks for any input you contribute.

I'm very glad you have been the one to put your pinkie in the nest and give it a good old stir :eeek:
I have various products sitting on shelves ranging from Vallejo to Moj Poj (eek, not sure thats correct spelling, but seen used for making ripple effects on top of resin products), to Scenic Waters.
I have had a pot of Scenic Water go solid in pot (unopened and never used, so how long a shelf life does these products have).
I'll be honest, I have watched loads and loads of You Tube Vids and been mesmerised by how realistic the effect is. It really is a art.
Honestly though, haven't used any yet  , despite being bought a load of water products by Mrs DW with Tamiya Bismark kit (again still on shelves).

Just read this post, and wondered why I have answered your post, as I haven't given you any useful advice at all.
What a twallock I am
Bench:1/35 Tamiya Tiger 1 Mid Production with lots of Aftermarket Stuff
Completed: Vespid 1/72 Comet A10
Shelf: Lots (101 Kits of multiple scales) of Armour + couple of Flappy / Wing Things, found a KV2 95% built and primed four years ago. Plus a few Lego Tech kits, to help restore MoJo

True, very true old chap. It certainly, in my experience seem to not last for a long time, even unopened. I really do want to have a bash at a water effect of some kind. I watched a vid on YT of a chap creating a very small, possibly 1/48 scale Water-Fall (no figures or vehicles), and it truly was amazing. the texture of the water, even down to ripples at the edges furthest away from the Water-Fall were just breath taking.
Give this chap a full size Oak, and he probably could whittle it down to a Bonsai

I've used Vallejo still water effects a lot and they seem fine, if very slow to use since you need to layer it 1-2mm at a time and let it dry overnight. Gonna give a try to AK's two-part resin water this week, hopefully. I want to try making a pontoon bridge diorama. How hard could it be?

There's always armour on my work bench.

I have tried many of the above, they all work but seemed really expensive to me and are for thin layers
To make a surface water dio, I use cheap clear paintable hardware silicone...the cheaper the better. These are a GE product from Home Depot

For a bigger depths you head into the clear poured two part epoxy resins. I would look for a good cheap non modelling specific version.
Once they define something for a specific use, it's cost quadruples.

Let me know how it goes.
Yeah waiting over night and only 1-2 mm seems like watching paint dry.
