Hello everyone,
it's been a while since I came on the forum or had time modeling... so I'm back in my current project for the last week ; and had a second episode of lift off paint when removing masking tape. My first attempt to fix it wasn't a big success... so I'm asking what people do to fix that problem without it showing after. My first left a difference in thickness ...

If you experience peeled paint that leaves a noticeable difference, you unfortunately don't really have an option aside from sanding the layers of paint down and applying new paint. You'd need 1000-3000 grit sanding sponge for that.

de tack the masking tape by pressing against a surface repeatedly.
make sure all surfaces are finger print free and mold release agent washed off sprues.

Not much to add aside from what the other guys have said.

Either sand it all the way back or you could try feathering the edges of the join with a fine grit sander of some sort.

The other alternative is to actually make a feature of it if you can - e.g. can you just strip back a single panel on an aircraft and then repaint that in a slightly different shade, or bare metal to show a replaced panel?

Thank you for the information. But won't it affect the other areas that are painted. The plane is all finished. I'm ready for the weathering. It happened this time when removing the masking tape I used to paint the German crosses.

You can see on the picture the area where it lifted. You see all the way through the plastic. And beside it you can see one of the areas I had the same problem. I'm using for this project AK Air paints for the first time and I'm having a lot of problems with them. I like the colors and the finish put real hard for me to put them nicely

Yeah unfortunately there's no silver bullet to fix this one, and if you're down to the plastic any repair job is going to take quite a bit of time & effort to patch it up unless one of the other guys knows of a few tricks that I haven't come across

Just out of interest what did you use as a primer under the main paint?

It's a real disappointment when this happens, my own theory is the surface is too smooth leaving nothing for the undercoat to key to. I now gently rub down areas I feel could give me a problem if I have to mask, since I started doing that, fingers crossed I've had no further problems.

You could turn the area into a bit of battle damage/repair

I think this happens to most modellers occasionally. The two things I do now is to go over the model before priming with the blue Ultimate buffer and then clean with IPA AND Ultimate Airbrush cleaner. Then I make sure that there's a decent gap between priming/painting and masking. It seems to happen less on the models that have been reboxed for some reason

I use Ultimate primer, AK Air paints that I have really trouble putting on, and tamiya masking tape.

I'v had it happen using Mr Surfacer using a Lacquer thinner. Never wiped the kit down before I stated painting though all the sprues were washed at the beginning.
