Hasegawa Nissan R91CP

Post by barryf1fan »

Now that the Acura RSX (Integra) is done for my son... gonna start this one. Will be doing this with the airbrush setup, so a real "experiment" for me. Being a busy time of the year I still need to get the venting of the booth done, and get some primer and paint that I can spray, and may have to decant from what I have. :D Anyway, here's a couple of pics of the next project.

Have already started on the chassis and cockpit sections (no pics), cleaning up and gluing together. This kit looks like it will be a real challenge for my skill level, especially using the airbrush.
Anyhoo, hope to have some updates soon - but will out all next week, so may be awhile. :thumb2:

Yes Barry! You’ll nail it I’m sure, take your time and you’ll be fine, can’t go wrong with an air brush, nice and steady, it’ll turn out great and you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Been down with my back the last couple of weeks. Plus busy with the holidays and wife's graduation stuff. Was able to get a little work done, not much really - just cleaning and prepping for my maiden voyage with the airbrush...

Looking to get more done after the holidays... hopefully.

The first time you use a AB and see the bland plastic changing colour like magic is very satisfying experience.
Prep work on the kit looks good and I'm sure the kit will be fun. :th: :cheers2:

Okay, finally got all the venting finished up on my spray booth and was able to swing by and get some Tamiya white and gray primer in liquid form. :D

Followed the instructions per the airbrush and got her going - man!! I love, yes I know, strong word for a little compressor, but dang that thing is quiet - I love the Sparmax compressor (if you can swing it, do it). Only got the primer down on a few bits and the body/chassis sections... I think I'm gonna really like this setup.

Here's a few shots:

Gettin' ready!!
Image

Image

And painted, er, primered up!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Pieces came out pretty nice for my maiden foray into the airbrush universe... had a couple of low spots.

Have a question for you Pro's though...
1. I had to pull the trigger back really far (as in all the way) to get the paint to finally come out, why is that? I adjusted the needle per the instructions - but it's like it was all the way back already...

2. The Iwata / Sparmax combo sprayed beautiful for the first bit - but the third time I filled the cup it started spraying little cob-webby bits - they weren't detrimental as I took a piece of cut up t-shirt and they wiped right off and the finish was super smooth. What would cause that? Adjusted the pressure up/down a little and didn't seem to matter.

Btw, I sprayed the Tamiya Primer at ~18 psi (went up to about 20 and down to about 15'ish - didn't seem to matter. Oh well, either way I had a crap ton-o-fun playing with it. Gonna be busy the next couple of days but can't wait to get back to it - I do need to get the Red/Blue/White for the Nissan though.

Thanks for looking and sharing in this fun experience!! :thumb2:

:th: :thumb2:   Hi Barry looks like you got the bug and the happy feeling too with your new set up and your going great guns. Your now on a learning curve to find what works best for you and as you use your AB more the better you will get

Q1 With undercoats/primers they tend to be pigment heavy to give a good surface for your top coat this also means that if your AB has a needle of 0.3 or lower it has to work harder to get the paint through the nozzle. With the low pressure you were using to get the paint to flow [18/20 psi] you may find it better to go up to 35 psi to get the paint to flow better. 0.4 /0.45 is better for AB undercoating and there are AB needle sets you can buy for your AB.

Q2 As you spray the nozzle cup can catch paint that builds up to the point where it starts to be picked up again by the air flow as it builds up this can cause the webbing you had and also the blobs of paint that ruin your finish. To prevent the above happening check the nozzle cup every time you top up for paint build up most AB's the nozzle cup is removable for cleaning. To do this pull the needle back so its just inside the AB [so you dont bend it] remove the cup and clean it, replace and off you go again.

Your last question is what we have all had to learn that you sometimes need to play around with the pressures to get the best out of the paint your using and your AB set up. You will quickly find out the best ways to adjust your set up but its also part of the learning curve. There are micro valves available that fit below the AB but right right now you will learn more about set up pressures and paint flow by using what you have now to get used to using an AB.

Hope this helps and in sure you will get more advice from other members to M8 .

Thanks for the detailed response @Hawkmoon really appreciate it. And I think you're right, I definitely need more time at the gun!

Will keep playing around with it, was hoping tomorrow would work out but already have several honey-do type things lined up. Hopefully in the next few days I can finish up putting primer on the small parts to get them ready for actual paint. :thumb1:

Thanks again for the detailed reply - will definitely play around with it some more.

That actually made me LOL!! Def having fun and am looking forward to be able to do some more "Pirming"...
Thanks for all the kind words and comments you guys leave, really appreciate it.

Had a bunch of crap 'round the house to do today - but was able to get back to the "bench" and work on my Hasegawa Nissan R91. I'm liking the Hasegawa, as it's the first one I've ever done, but it is definitely not Tamiya quality. There are injection mold marks everywhere - I have probably spent 4-6 hours cleaning up the individual pieces alone. I mean, sheesh, if this was a Tamiya I'd probably already be done with it.

Was also able to run by the LHS and grab some paint and supplies, but here's a few pics of the "snail's pace" progress I made today - although, really just itching to get back to the airbrush and play some more.

Image

Here's an example of the injection points. They're everywhere I tell'ya!

Image

Image

A few parts ready for primer... lot's more to go... :violin:

Have to admit, I've really enjoyed picking back up the hobby and just like the quiet time working (or piddling as my wife lovingly puts it) and completing tasks.
As always, thanks for looking and hope to have more time to work on it tomorrow. :thumb2:

Didn't realise Hasegawa kits needed so much cleaning. I've just had to pay an unexpected & hefty customs fee for my Lancia Delta WRC coming from Japan. Double black marks!!

Hope I didn't make it sound like it was terrible... the kit is amazing and has so much detail - I'm loving the small details that are everywhere in this kit, for example the radiators have the hex fitting molded in - amazing!! I would dare say that this kit has quite a bit more detail than the Tamiya R89C kit I have. On top of that, the fit and finish of the part's are great. It's just that several parts had injection mold spots, like the chassis, and the intakes I showed above... but honestly, it doesn't take away from the kit, just a little more work to get them ready.

Was able to work on the turbo and radiator intakes and get them mounted up - it was almost like puzzle pieces. It is a Beautiful kit though!

Here are the intakes glued together - I used mask tape to hold them to shape and then glued them up with Tamiya Extra Thin.

Image

Mocked up with mask tape for fitment test

Image

Glued up on the rear cowling - looking pretty good. Loving the way this one is coming together

Image

Slow going, but that's generally how I roll - get distracted easily. I did get a bunch of little bits & pieces glued up and cleaned ready for primer. Gonna try and do that tomorrow after work. :thumb1:

Thanks for looking!!

Finally!! Had a chance to work on the Nissan Race Kar!

I'm really enjoying the airbrush setup, but it's proving a bit difficult to get a handle on. Nothing upsetting, just my inconsistencies with being a n00b.

(kinda crap pics. . . )

Got a lot of the parts painted...
Image

And got a new little fancy-schmancy circle cutter - wheels came out pretty good, I think. :thumb2:

Image

Image

Instructions called out for "Earth Green" on the underside of the body, I have no clue what that is supposed to look like. So... since it's my model I decided to mix a bit of black into light green and make my "own" Earth Green". Light coats, trying to build it up, but here you can see how terrible I am at airbrushing.

Image

All done, with about 6 coats to get coverage (it's not black, the LED lights in my spray booth make it a bit darker than it is...)

Image

:thumb1: Got the white coats down on the body - so freakin' excited to do the blue and red!!

Image

Was able to do a little bit of assembly.

Image

Hopefully through the week I can work on the body some more... Looking forward to getting the decals on!
Thanks for looking!!

Looks amazing B, looks like you've already got your AB dialled in to me, and you only ever get better with practice, so if you're already knocking out paint like this, the future looks very bright!
It's going to really come alive once you get the red and blue down and then the decals :P

I presume you will be masking and spraying the blue and red a tip here is to run a line of clear coat/varnish along the edge of the masking tape leave to dry and spray. This should stop any bleed and you will end up with a nice straight line. When you remove the masking pull it away from the edge and not over it :eeek: well in theory anyway works for me looooooooool :bash:  :thumb2:

Thanks man!! I don't know about dialed. . . but am getting more comfortable with it and just messing around with how much to thin paint. I'm using the Tamiya Acrylics right now but would like to get some of the LP's. I had to do the white a couple of times, I thinned it too much the first time. Ha!

And yes, looking forward to getting the red and blue down... thanks for looking in Gary. :thumb1:

Got to work on the Nissan again today, worked on it most the afternoon. Quite a bit done (again, for me), as I was able to work on the front & rear suspensions, and cockpit portion some more.

Ended up having to spray the white again as it wasn't laid down with enough coats, and I think I was spraying with too low a pressure and it just wasn't putting out the paint. So I sprayed the white and set the body aside to dry and worked on the other parts... Well, got excited about putting the red down tonight and masked the body off and sprayed the red. Which came out great. H O W E V E R, even though I de-tacked the tape it left marks on the white - because of course it wasn't cured enough having just sprayed it a few hours before. :wall: :wall: :wall: I guess I just get impatient when I do finally have a chance to work on a model, that I sometimes tend to rush things I wouldn't normally.:

One step forward two steps back with this one. Anyway, slowly figuring out the airbrush - today was the best results I've had with it so far. :thumb2:

A few pics of the progress, sorry, didn't take any of "in progress" steps. . .

Image

Image

Image

I had to mix the blue that is on the rear wing there. Sprayed it just regular Tamiya X-4 Blue and it was waaay too dark. Mixed in some white, and even though it's still too dark it's much better than it was. It won't match the decals (that are blue) perfectly, but that's okay... mainly using this kit as a tester for me getting used to the new airbrush.

Thanks for looking!!

WOW Barry! I missed this thread. Looks very good. Excellent build. This is coming along very nicely. I hope you are getting a handle on the AB! I did a lot of practice with mine ahead of time so I could get a feel for mine. Like Hawkmoon mentioned I also use various size needles to spray mine. .3 for primer, .2 for paint and .4 for P2K HAGD

Thanks Hawk, and yes - getting experience as I go and just learning. I did see the color matched stuff, but everywhere I looked it was out of stock (the blue anyway..)

Thanks Murph!! Appreciate the kind words. I'm getting a handle on it, slowly but surely.
I too, am doing a lot of practicing - just on this Nissan kit!! :D :D
Yeah, I've thought about different airbrushes for different applications - will probably do that once I get confident with it. So far the Iwata has done everything I've asked of it, just had to mess with different things to get it "right".

Was able to put down the Nissan Calsonic blue after our church study group that we do every other Sunday...

I really need to focus on my masking skills a bit. Painting with cans is different than using the AB... I had a little bit of tape come up that I didn't notice - not horrible and I'll probably leave it. Just learning a lot and making mental notes of what "not" to do next time.

Thank you, sir. Still learning (have a haunting feeling I may be using that crutch for awhile with the AB setup  )

Quick ? for you guys, ahem, gurus on the airbrush'n techniques...

If you look there at the front of my NIssan, it looks a bit, texture'y (yes, I know, not a real word  ).
When I sprayed the Primer (Tamiya fine surface primer - Gray) it went down buttery smooth, waaay smoother than the same primer from the spray can. The Tamiya acrylics, however, are going on a bit "rough". Sometimes I get a better result than other times. For instance the sides aren't near as "bumpy" as the front portion, even though they were painted at the same time and with the same cup of paint.

Why is that?? I pretty much did the same method for all parts involved...
I remember someone saying that the acrylics dry really fast... could this be the issue? Did I just get heavy handed (or finger) over the front a bit more than the sides and laid down the paint a bit too heavy? Do the Tamiya Lacquers have this issue?

Anyhoo, any response or suggestion would be helpful. I still think it will turn out okay, as again, this is my guinea pig model for the AB and have learned a lot already. Like how to properly change up pressures if something isn't spraying right, or why there needs to be more/less thinner in something.

TIA for your help! :cheers2:

Not sure how this has flown under my radar since you started using the a/b
Love the booth set up and you sure did jump into it. That primer is one thick SOB, so proper dilution and boosting the pressure is what I do when I use Mr Surfacer, a similar primer.

Super impressed with your skills already.
I was blowing paint all around and off the model like a maniac my first few tries.

Tamiya XF paints go down a lot smoother if you use Mr Hobby leveling thinner. It's like chalk and cheese the difference.

Thanks for the reply... do you use all Mr hobby leveling thinner, or some of that and some of the tamiya x20a. I used a bit of the Mr Hobby stuff in the flat black I sprayed the chassis, roll bar, etc... and it sprayed waaaay way better and smoother. I didn't use any in the white, blue or red... That must be it - cool!! Thanks dude! :thumb2:

I never use tamiya x20a any more at all.
I do use x-22 mixed 50/50 with Mr Hobby leveling thinner as a clear gloss coat as well. Won't say that it is the best for a finial finish on a car, but for a sealer coat after decaling armor it is fine.

X20A is garbage.
Use Mr LevellingThinner or Tamiya Laquer Thinner....as Digger said, the spray difference is monumental!!!

Thanks guys!! :th:

Yeah, I used the Tamiya Laquer thinner to spray the primer and it was so smooth... the acrylics, not-so-much.

Now I know. I use the 20A to clean brushes.

I use levelling thinner too, I did have mild success using X20A at first, but I won't be going back. I use the X20A as an aggressive decal softener now if I need too.

You're doing great things B, we can all see you have already got the AB by the balls, it's just practice practice practice now, just like the rest of us, always learning.

Barry, what you are experiencing is Orange Peal. If you do a search on this you will get a tip. zBut like the guys said the X-22 is junk and this shows up. I like the others use a 50/50 mix with the Tamiya mix of thinner and paint and have eliminated this Orange peal. When you get time look into Splash paints and some of the P2K clear. Much better job on the clear but you WILL need a respirator as this stuff really stinks.

that is exactly what I use X-20A for. Cleaning my brushes.

Yep cleaning brushes and decal softener
The nice tall X20A jar is good for recycling your lacquer thinners after cleaning the a/b...just pour into empty bottle and let solids settle.
Then I use that recycled stuff over and over as cleaner, but not to dilute paint

Guess I've been doing it wrong.

Now I know, I'll pick up some more Leveling Thinner to dilute with. Thanks for all the informative replies, guys, really appreciate the knowledge. :thumb1:

Now I just need to decide if I want to press on with this one, the way it is or sand it back and re-shoot the red, white and blue. . .

I may do some wet sanding to see how it looks after a bit of TLC, and then decide from there. I'm kinda itchin' to start a new kit though and I don't know why - I usually don't get the desire to start a new one until a week or so after I finish a kit.

Decided to press on with this kit. I knew it was never gonna be a perfect kit   I mean really,
  • It's being built by me, there WILL be mistakes.
  • It's the guinea pig for my foray into the airbrush universe...
So I've been able to work on it the last couple of evenings and still have a bit of assembly and a few more decals to place, but once I decide which clear to go with will be able to wrap up this one.

So I didn't have a ton of time to work on it, nor did I really feel like it once I started...]

I decided to just use the rattle can Semi-Gloss clear I already had (the LHS was out of stock) as I may as well use it up...
I got it all over my filter and spray booth though and will probably chuck the rest.
