Good morning all
Well, as a confirmed Armour-Head, Wheelie and Track-Nut type chap, I have decided to have a go at Winged Things

.
So here I am on this side of the Forum, with a first build of a plane in 35 years.
Please be nice.......please
I have two planes in my stash, and both are iconic planes of WW2. One is the 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire (Tropical Version) and the other is this, the Eduard 1/48 Profipack BF109G-6

I have decided to have a bash at the BF109
Lets have a peek inside first.
Apologies for quality of images. I use my phone for taking images. Plus, I get an awful lot of reflection from Over-head lights in Man-Cave.
So, what do we have?
A4 Instruction sheet, that having had a cursory glance seems nicely laid out and as their are many versions to build, the first job is to secure which version to build?

I have gone for version D, which is a plane that was flown by Oblt Kurt Gabler, 8./JG300, Juterbog - Waldlager Air Base, Germany, July, 1944.

Paint call outs are for Mr Hobby, which luckily, I had most of the basics but have had to order in some more from
www.emodels.co.uk, note Yellow Post-it-Note at ready for jotting down paints required:th:
Again, apologies for shine / reflection but I don't like to get some parts out of the protective plastic covers.
Here are the decals.

Lovely coloured PE Parts + Masking pieces for Canopy.

Then the sprues with parts, which having read through the Instruction Sheet is blessed with lots of spares.

Canopy, again apologies for shine.

So, all in all, a nice little introduction to Winged Things again. Its going to be a straight OOTB build as it seems to have everything that is required.
So guidance and input from you experienced chaps is greatly appreciated. Watch this space and for God's Sake, help me.
Happy New Year to you all,
DW

Well, finally got a chance to sit down and study this model and start to build
Now, having sat down and studied this model, and doing some research on my preferred build, a chap is allowed to change his mind

.
My original thought had been to build the version D. This was, on studying, a "Sanded Down" body, almost in most areas, down to the metal.
I have seen some builds of this model in this finish, but, sadly, I feel it would be beyond my experience. Man"s got to know his limitations, as Eastwood would say.
So, I have decided to swap to a slightly more forgiving Colour Scheme

.
So i'm going with this,

So, on with the build. Most Plane builds, I believe, start with the Cockpit Tub.

The first parts are a mix of Plastic and PE, two parts PE and two Plastic Wheels. A chance to use this product that came today in Post, Its from MIG productions and is called Ultra Glue. Its a thick white, water based "Gloop", looks a lot like PVA. Supposed to dry clear, and be good for small parts and PE.

Few other parts added,

I'm going for an unusual choice of Base=Coat / Primer.

It will help with the Chipping effect I want to create in the Tub.
So for now, thats it for this afternoons work on this model. Hope you like the build so far and hopefully, it will get better
Have a great evening,
DW

Evening Paul
Never built an Eduard so no prior ideas or anything to fall back on.
I"m gonna take my time, and follow advice, and keep researching, on previous builds for any hiccups or problem areas.
Thanks for looking in

Well Kaleb, its been 35 years for me since I built a Plane of any scale
This morning ((being Sunday), and Mrs DW at work, and me with the return of the Head-Cold / Man Flu, you get the picture

.
Return to toasty Man-Cave to resume a little work on this kit.
As I'm awaiting more paint, and especially the Black-Gray (RLM 66), paint for the inner fuselage Cockpit area from
www.emodels.com, I can't do much else.
I fired up the Bambi, to lay down some paint as a base for Chipping (Vallejo, Model Air, Steel).
As this is being now constructed as Type B, some removal of moulded on parts on each side of Cockpit walls was required, as per instructions. The Eduard Instructions do need to be read once, twice and three times so as to pick up on any deviations to correspond to the model you are building.
Using the very, very sharp Micro Chisel (sorry, not a clue where I bought it from, and make and model), I removed the two mouldings from Sidewalls.

As not much more can be done to Cockpit sidewalls, I moved on to Coloured PE Instrument Panel. Comprising of 3-Parts, I used the new MIG Productions Ultra Glue to stick the three bits to each other. Good stuff this Ultra Gloop. Dries clear and needs very little of it to fix.

I then sprayed the Plastic Instrument wall, Sidewalls of Fuselage and Cockpit Tub with Vallejo, Model Air, Steel through the trusty Apex at 1.5 Bar with no Thinner or any additives. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos of finished results, but it laid on beautifully and has given a solid base for Chipping.
So, until Postie delivers some paints, thats gonna be it for this week.
Hope you have all had a super weekend whatever you have been up to?

Good to see that Mig stuff works well. I may order some, as one of the recent kits I bought had PE in it. I've never used PE before so I'm excited to give that a try.
That instruments panel looks so good, it's amazing what detail they can pack into something so small

I"ve seen many mediums used fro gluing PE. Most use C/A. i do use Thick C/A but you always run the risk of adding to much medium and getting residue ruining the look.
I notice that a few use Varnish or PVA.
This ultra glue looks a lot like PVA. and could possibly be an expensive pot of PVA
In AK and MIG we trust.

Not worth pictures tonight, but two layers of Chipping Fluid added to Cockpit interior areas, through Apex.
Plus a little haul arrived from
www.emodels.co.uk and
www.scalemodelshop.co.uk
Paints to suit and some more Chipping Fluid and treated myself to some more Pencils, as I loved the Green set.

Plus some line for radio antenna.

Further works this weekend,

A quiet day at work, and I spent some time doing what I should have done at the start of this build.
Doing a bit of reference work.
To be honest, every build of whatever subject you choose, should involve a spot of reference. I mean whats the bloody point of the www, if you dont use it.
I'm a fool. A huge conceited fool.
Who admits, after not building a winged thing in 35 years, of not doing some basic reference work prior to building something

.
I dont know anything about the BF109G-6. Yeah, it was the workhorse of the Luftwaffe for many of the early war years and even used to the end. I knew that, but apart from that, not a lot else.
Alarm bells should have rung in my head when building the Cockpit. Why was a long thin piece of clear plastic attached to the right of the seat, and according to instructions painted in yellow
Why painted yellow?
Why does Eduard provide this part in clear plastic?
Then 15 minutes of delving into the web, brought the answer.

Its the Fuel line, it probably has a better title, but its cleverly moulded by Eduard in clear plastic, so you can leave the section at the top clear, so the Pilot can see the fuel..........
What a bloody idiot I am
At least its easily remedied.
I have only put a layer of Silver and a couple of layers of Chipping Fluid on that piece.
A dab of Paint Remover and then mask off ready for all the paints, washes and filters to be applied.
Its a good reminder to self and all.
Before starting a new model and cracking open box and whacking plastic together with TET and paint............STOP!
Spend a wee time having a look on the www, and even if you think you knew what you are building, you maybe will be surprised by something you find, simply by referencing the model in front of you.
Have a great evening,
DW

Evening all
So a quick update on this afternoons tiny, tiny session before Mrs DW came home.
You will have read my rant above reference, being careful about reading up on projects before starting and during.
The nice people at
www.emodels.com, sent me this to have a gander through. Packed full of Tips and very nicely laid out.

I also ordered some Isopropyl Alcohol, 1L from RB On-line. Had this within 24hrs of ordering.

So, with a very small brush, I removed enough Vallejo Silver with Revell Paint Remover, to get back to clear original part, on Fuel Indicator.

It came out well

I can now mask this off with a little Vallejo Liquid Mask, and lay down a little colour tomorrow.
Air-Booth ready to go,

Colour will be two fine layers of AK Air RLM 66. Should give me a nice base for scratching. Prior to that, I'll highlight with RLM 66 and a touch of white.
Thats all for now chaps,

Hey up, from a very cold Midlands Man-Cave.
Hard Frost over night, and as I crunched across the grass, and paving stepping stones to Man-Cave, what would the mornings shenanigans bring?
Well, all set up for some color to be added to Fuselage Cockpit area in the form of AK RLM 66.

Lots of pieces of Pre-Coloured PE added.
Did have a small disaster with the coloured PE, as the coloured part cracked off when bending the PE. Not very good

. So have had to turn to the Plastic provided part and Deca;s for the dials.
Not a massive, huge problem as most of this will not be seen once closed up. The coloured printed section does not seem to be bonded very well to the PE.

So little bits of colour added in the shape of Joystick "Gaiter", Joystick handle painted Black.
Pedal Straps painted.

Have made up PE provided Restraints, and as usual with Eduard, nice parts, but not very clear instruction as to where to stick them
Reference photos from real thing and completed models will assist.
So thats it for now, thanks for dropping by chaps.

Well a wee little more "beautifying" of Cockpit and Cockpit Fuselage sidewalls. Bit of Chipping and Scratches applied around Cockpit. Fuel line painted Yellow and the Vallejo Mask still in place to cover clear plastic (doh).
Little bit more kit supplied PE added and a Postie delivery of some Tamiya Sponge Sanders.

Fairly close now to buttoning up the fuselage sides.
Just need to add Harness and couple of coats of Gloss, and a mix of some Black Winsor Newton Oils to accentuate panels and detail.

Hope I'm doing alright by you guys.
Have a great day all,

So my morning session of The Archers Omnibus and modelling began, with a heavy heart for a lost wheel.
But, Digger had sewn a spark in my noggin.
I had in the Garage, unused for many, many years, a little Vacuum with an internal filter designed I think for a Hobby units purpose. Very good suck, and with the internal filter, this may just work.....

So, back on my knees and to work we go with its little hose extension, I worked over all the areas I had covered yesterday with hand and eye search.
After 10 minutes of working over the areas again, I gingerly opened the Vacuum casing and tapped out the filter.

Wow, wow, wow.......
Quick as a flash, I glued it back on so I didn't lose it again
I have added the Eduard provided PE coloured Pilot Harness to seat, and having checked the Fuselage Cockpit areas for any more areas to have parts added, none.
I thought it would be a good idea to carry out an Oil Wash. I used Lamp Black, a tiny amount, dabbed on some Paper Towel and left to drain the residual oils out. Then mixed with Turps, in a 80% to 10% Colour wash.
Washed over the Cockpit Tub and Cockpit walls into crevices and ridges.

The residual once dried, swabbed off with Baby Bud / Q-Tip.
I probably have shown this before, but the finished Instrument Panel.

These are the two dials , that I wanted to create from the Coloured PE Part but when bent, the coloured part came away. I resorted to the plastic part with decal added. Drop of Micro Set and Sol.

I also managed to work on the Exhausts, which having been primed were sprayed with Mr Hobby Metal Burnt Iron.

This means that all that is needed, is a coat of Matt Varnish on Fuselage Walls and Cockpit Tub, the whole lot then can be glued in place and two sides of Fuselage can be joined together.
Hope you all have a great day,
DW
