1/24 Fujimi Shelby Cobra

Post by Tankboy76 »

This would have been this kit I made for the Movies SIG build (to cover Ford v Ferrari). I never really had a desire/interest in these cobras - I always associated them with over popular kit cars, but after the movie and some research, an itch formed.

I started with the body. I'm using splash paints guardsman blue over Gaianotes Gloss White (masked to leave racing stripes) over splash white primer. Next up will be a gloss coat, decals+panel liner, then a final gloss coat.

I'm not really happy with how the window frame fits, but that's what we've got. I had never done masked stripes like this, so it was an experiment for me. I have a couple points of overspray around the masking, my lession: burnish to the tape more, and use the vinyl tape when trying to take a straight line against a curve (which I did a little bit off on the ends, but should have across the whole model.)

Not a huge amount of progress, got the splash 1k clear on the body yesterday. The blue really became deep with the clear. I used 4 coats, the last two were pretty thick.

Thanks for the comments, feels good to get feedback.

I spent most of an unproductive week stripping and rechroming the trim parts.

With that out of the way I got enough of the suspension assembled to allow a test fit of the body and frame.

Image The wheels took the most time (or least it felt like it. The best way I know how to mask the edges of the wheels is to cut many small pieces of tape and lay them in so they form a curve without kinking. "Easy" but time consuming. The lock nuts are the same color as the inner wheel - I wish I had chosen a slightly contrasting color, they are a bit too camouflaged.

Up next, once the suspension glue is secure, is the engine into the frame, and then the interior tub.

You are getting there, very very close
It is looking very very sharp, so take your time and finish well :thumb2:

I have had one of these kits on order from Japan mid January and it is supposedly due here May 17th!!! :bash: :wall:

The last day when all the bits come together and details start to look like more than the sum of their parts is always exciting. I had to stop briefly as I felt a little punchy, but finished it up the next day. Some details didn't come out like I wanted, but I still feel satisfied. It is hard to make a cobra look bad. Although it will be a while before I build another car with this many little chrome pieces.

One note - the kit only had Japanese license plates. My stash didn't have any extras with California plates (where Shelby American was based), so I left the plate blank for now. Maybe someday, but I'm happy for now. Also, the suspension is not molded with as much detail as I would hope - the rear axle looks like a solid axle where the real cobras had, I think, independent rears. Not a big deal, as it probably built easier as a result.

Also if you build this kit, the headers are multi-piece assembly that can be put together wrong. Pay attention, test fit. I still ended up with gaps between the engine half and the body half.

Next up I have an egg model I've been looking for an excuse to build.
